Rockies AFLers

From this morning's 'Rocky':

"KID STUFF: Third baseman Ian Stewart, the Rockies' first-round draft choice in 2003, is among six players the organization will send to the Arizona Fall League.

Closer Jim Miller and catcher Chris Ianetta, both draft choices from a year ago who recently were promoted from Class A Modesto to Class AA Tulsa, also will play for the Peoria Javelinas. Miller was an eighth- round selection out of Louisiana-Monroe. Ianetta was selected in the fourth round out of North Carolina.

The Rockies also are sending right-handed pitchers Ramon Ramirez and Jon Asahina and center fielder Jeff Salazar to the AFL, where Modesto manager Stu Cole will be the bench coach. Ramirez was acquired from the Yankees in the Shawn Chacon trade."

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

We had five of them in last night's comments
And as you posted this I was linking the article in today's Pebble Report. Doh! A little slow on my own site.

Anyway, I already commented on the position players, but now that we know the full contingent of pitchers, I find it interesting that Ramirez was thrown in. He's definitely show he needs some work, and Asahina should be a good showcase as he preps for a possible shot as one of next year's sixth starters. Miller has been sensational at two levels and we have to look at him as a potential source of help for the bullpen sometime next year as well.

AFL pitchers
The AFL is predominatly a hitter's league, so pitching numbers that look solid are a pretty good indicator of a pitcher that is very close to contributing at the big league level. I don't have the numbers in front of me but I seem to remember Ryan Speier struggling mightily in the AFL last year.

Speier's stats
0-3, 7.27 ERA, 15 G, 3 SV, 17.1 IP, 16 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 16 K, .239 Opp. BA.

Re: Speier's Stats
Y'know, despite the high ERA, those numbers really aren't all that bad and belie a reliever with really bad luck (or else one that had a propensity for inconsistency/extra base hits). I must have been thinking only of the ERA when I recalled a rough fall for Ryan last year.

I like
the players being sent.

--Salazar needs to show improvement.
--Gives Ramirez some good time in the bullpen
--Allows them to see what they really have with Asahina.
--Is pushing Iannetta, Stewart, and Miller.

I like the idea of the three of Iannetta, Stewart, and Miller. It already seems as though they are pushing Iannetta and Miller quite quickly, and it might give Stewart some big experience, allowing him to the make the jump next year (which I think he will, a la Francoeur).

Just my take.

All the rosters for
the AFL have been released. Peoria is loaded at catcher with Iannetta, Clement and Kottaras.

1, 2, 3.... Javelinas
That Peoria team is NASTY. I'd pay to watch that ballclub. Prince and Ian Stewart on the corners, with Barfield and Hardy up the middle? Those catchers? Hart, Salazar, and the two Baltimore OFs? That is a sweet freaking team right there.

AFL games
start on Tuesday. The Javelinas take on the Rafters at home.

Stewie has to be the starter at 3rd on Opening Day over Tripper Johnson III. Don't know about The Net at catcher though.

I also wonder if Salazar gets the nod in center,
or if it will be Adam Jones, who the Mariners want to move out there from shortstop. Markakis isn't really a centerfielder even though he's played it frequently in the minors and has a better bat than either of the other two, so maybe it could be him instead. The others are primarily corners, aren't they? Anyway, it'll be a tricky call for the coaches either way.

I'm betting Ianetta does get the start at backstop as he's better than Hubele (who's on the taxi-squad anyway) and Kottaras and more ready than Clement, but I'm definitely biased. Actually I'm biased toward Clement as well, so maybe that cancels it out.
