Game Thread - Acevedo versus Correia

Who are these guys the Giants are using as pitchers these days? Well, at least they haven't promoted Matt Cain yet, meaning the Rockies have a pretty decent shot of sweeping it. No Bonds, no Alou, no Schmidt or Benitez, two games without Matheny, apparently the Giants want to get a shot at Miller, Bard or Kennedy more than we do. I say let 'em at it. Acevedo gets his full five days of rest this time, so he should be better.

Go Rockies!

I like todays...
lineup. Q and Gonzo hitting at the top...Hurdle should put Sullivan down where Mohr is in the order. I do like the idea of Mohr starting though...he has been hitting as of late.

Looks like we might need the cushion...
A one out triple and walk spells trouble. Come on Ace'

Wrong Park to hit it over that direction Dustan
SBC and deep flies to right-center don't make for happy hitters.

Wow
Closser hit another triple.
He's been hitting a lot better lately.

by malakian on Aug 4, 2005 2:11 PM MDT reply actions

He sure has, I'm not complaining though
We do need to find a good defensive backup/partner behind the plate still for at least the first half of next year, though.

by Rox Girl on Aug 4, 2005 2:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah
Closser's defense is atrocious.
He almost threw a ball into right field on a pick-off attempt last inning.
Maybe he should learn how to play a new position... although, he doesn't have the body-type to play any where else. We could have really used Shoppach.

this
early start really snuck up on me.  I was going to do some pregame analysis, but then I went to the Rockies website and the game had started.

I hate that about early games sometimes...
Part of my deal with SB Nation is that I have a game thread up every time we play, but sometimes day games surprise me and I get it up only a few minutes beforehand. Oh well, at least I haven't missed any yet. It's been interesting for me, however as I was never this into the Rockies before I came over here. I was really into them, and would blog about them and their farm regularly but I would always sort of run out of gas as far as blogging goes right about this time of year when we were so far out that it got depressing before kicking it back up in the offseason unless there was a notable debut or something (like Franchise last year). I'm learning so much more now, though and I'm getting weird Rockies dreams about carrying deer meat up stairs, but that's another story... :)

Anyway, nice game by Ace.

JD!!
A triple earlier in the game...NOW A HOMER!!! JDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!...kid is starting to come around.

Hitting .237 now. The way he is hitting lately, Hurdle can sit him, can he??

David

by Rockiesbiggestfan on Aug 4, 2005 3:30 PM MDT reply actions

Now slugging over .430
and the on base is reaching acceptable levels for a catcher.  Closser has gone from being terrible to becoming valuable in about two weeks time.  If he can pick it up on the defensive end, he could be a good enough starter to last until Iannetta is ready, in which he could become a backup.  Either way, just keep hitting and good things will happen.

Does Fuentes go again?
After pitching last night and the night before, I wonder if he's going to get rested tonight. If tha's the case, who does Hurdle go to? Dohmann? Williams?

Nice! Insurance
Is it just me, or is Larry Bigbie doing everything Eric Byrnes was supposedly going to do?

Dammit...
Miceli gives up 3 runs!! 4-4 now. Dammit. The offense goes out, on the road, in San Fran and gets us a 4-1 lead for our setup man and he blows it.

AHHHH!!!!!!
6-4 Giants...Niekro with a double...5 runs in the bottom of the 8th..and I was hoping for the sweep!

Hurdle baffling again
if a guy is pitching on consecutive days, and gives up three straight hits to load the bases, it isn't a good idea to let him just flail about on the mound.  When was the last time Carvajal pitched?  Why hasn't Dohmann been given a shot yet this series?  This team doesn't need to win to the point that guys like Miceli are taking away innings from developing pitchers.  I understand in tight ball games, but we were up three runs!  Why can't Carvajal or Dohmann take the hill under a short leash?  Instead Miceli's long leash may cost this team a victory.  Oh, and there it just went, thank you Williams...

Oh junk
this is no bueno.

WTF?!
Does Hurdle think there is some law set in stone somewhere that if you're ahead by three runs or less you have to use the set-up closer combo and they will never wear out? Ludicrous! Arrgh, and we were so close to the sweep, too. Six outs. aargh

by Rox Girl on Aug 4, 2005 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

Well, on the bright side
Closser is up and he's hot, and Miles and Sullivan aren't in the lineup to pound the ball into the ground.  Please us Piedra to pinch hit, oh please.  Walker is no stud closer, we can score on him.  don't give it up by hitting with Sullivan...

by David "ohno" on Aug 4, 2005 4:13 PM MDT reply actions

well...
Closser and Piedra strike out.

by Rockiesbiggestfan on Aug 4, 2005 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

For some reason...
Hurdle always seems to do that. There are games when we are losing and he will bring his setup-closer in to "get some work". It is mind-boggling to me.

And with a 3 run lead, Hurdle ALWAYS brings in his combo. It is so frustrating. He could bring in guys like Carvajal or Dohmann to get some work, while giving them a "shorter" leash that with others, as OhNo pointed out.

I just dont get it...There goes the sweep I was hoping for. O well, it was a good series anyways. 2 out of 3 in San Fran is good for us, and we shouldve/couldve swept the series if not for some bad managing.

David

by Rockiesbiggestfan on Aug 4, 2005 4:16 PM MDT reply actions

And bad pitching
Hurdle didn't make the best of decisions, but Miceli could have easily rectified the situation by not sucking.  Too bad, at least sully never saw the field today...yet...so maybe he's starting to learn some things.

by David "ohno" on Aug 4, 2005 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

So much for the sweep...
nice series anyways...

by Rockiesbiggestfan on Aug 4, 2005 4:27 PM MDT reply actions

It was nice to get two, but that's tough
when the third was so close to being in our grasp. Sigh, oh well, the team is looking pretty sharp at least, I like this mix, and since we've been sitting Miles we're in every game.

Rox Notes a laugher
Love and hate the comments regarding Sullivan's "rest" at the conclusion of Rox Notes today, as nobody associated with the team wants to believe what is right in fornt of their eyes; Cory Sullivan is a bad player.  The comment states that Sullivan is resting becaue of a bad 0-10 start to this road series, should this be a shocker?  Sullivan's splits are:

home:  .355/.400/.400
road:  .179/.200/.264
trans: .247/.293/.310
EQA:   .218???
VORP:  -3.5???  Worse than Ardoin!!!

I'm sorry, but Dexter Fowler could do a better job right now, but it is rediculous for that point to even be debated!  A couple more road games and Sullivan won't even have a .300 translated slugging!  What is sad is that only Chris Burke has more at bats with a negative VORP, and has been the worst rookie receiving regular playing time, yet if he had the priveledge of playing half of his games at Coors, he'd put up a better VORP than he has currently, simply from the psychological benefit.  We not only play this clown everyday, we bat him leadoff!  I can't get too overjoyed about Miles getting the heaveho, because we've just replaced the problem with Sullivan!  Back to the Rox Notes, Sullivan's cold streak has nothing to do with tiredness, or missing last year, but more to do with the fact that he is incapable of contributing in a neutral environment.  0-10, he was only two hits away from increasing his road average, is that really a slump.  No, the guy needs to be sent down pronto, I'm sure he has plenty of options left.

Also in Rox Notes, it says Quintanilla will have to work on his hitting approach if he wants to stay at leadoff.  Why?  Sullivan and Miles, two players that have shared the leadoff spot, have a combined 17 walks and 80 strikeouts in 450 ABs, numbers that don't scream selectivity, unless striking out in tough situations is a selection you can make.

This isn't a pro Q post, moreso a no more Sullivan one, so I hope i haven't construed any type of favoritism in this, actually, Sullivan is a Tulsan, so you'd think I'd back him.  Being a rookie is no longer a good excuse, and playing Sullivan is only mudding up a potentially sticky situation in centerfield next season.  While Salazar hasn't been great at the Springs, it is time for him to take the reigns of center in Denver full-time for the remainder of the year, so the team can rightfully evaluate the situation.  This team already struggles enough, why make matters worse by trotting out Ardoin, Sullivan and Miles everyday, three players that bring little service in significant roles.  Thoughts?

by David "ohno" on Aug 4, 2005 6:13 PM MDT reply actions

Sullivan hasn't shown he's the centerfield answer
I'm not quite as adamant about it as you, but I think Salazar would be better in the role. I'm not sure where Cory's power is supposed to be as he hasn't really shown much of it in his professional career to date. I'm certain Salazar has more pop and patience and will be as good a defender at least, so I don't know what we're waiting for other then to give Sullie a few too many chances to prove he's incapable in the same way we did with Aaron.

by Rox Girl on Aug 4, 2005 6:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Sullivan
Since the END OF APRIL....is hitting .249 with 4, I repeat, FOUR, extra base hits, with ONLY 9 WALKS!!

This isnt even 5th outfielder material in my book. Thats horrible. I think Choo could do better than this.

I think it is time for Salazar to be brought up.
