Colorado Rockies Game #72: Cook vs. Zito

Cookie just gets the worst draws every time, doesn't he? Anyway, Aaron's been as solid as anybody in our rotation this year, even if not quite as lucky. Now in order to complete the Rockies sweep, he'll have to go toe to toe with one of the best pitchers in the American League. Zito was one of my favorite players at 'SC and I've always been proud of his success at the MLB level. Still, we're not in college anymore and I know where my loyalties lie, Go Rockies!

So much
for a third consecutive shutout.

What is the deal with Fuentes?
Can he not have a save situation without surrendering a run these days?  What is this, three straight, two of them blown saves?

by David "ohno" on Jun 21, 2006 9:22 PM MDT reply actions

Thanks Fuentes
You always blow a save at the worst times. But then again, is there ever a good time to blow a save?

Also, someone PLEASE try to explain to me why, with a runner on 1st and one out and down one run, Hurdle chose to PINCH RUN WITH BRAD HAWPE and LET CLINT BARMES BAT.

Sometimes, I really hate wasting three hours of my night watching this team and its complete moron of a manager blow it in crunch time.

Confusing strategy
I thought (hoped) that he had some master plan when he sent in Hawpe to pinch run for Yorvit but nothing logical or useful ever came of it.

I don't see how you take Hawpe's bat out of the game when you only have 2 outs to work with and Barmes and Sully are the guys due up.

Damn
Tough loss tonight - entertaining pitcher's duel, however. Shame to see Fuentes give up the big blast - I'd have pitched around Swisher there, as the next two lefties probably weren't going to do anything against Brian (and they didn't - Kotsay and Chavez fanned) and I'd take my chances with two out and a runner on. But, hindsight is 20-20.

I was there tonight - went with my brother. We sat way up above home plate. That meant we really didn't get a chance to see how Zito's curveball behaved. It didn't seem like he had great command of the pitch tonight. How did it look on TV?

Two more things...
First - Carroll was absolutely safe on that play at third in the first inning. At least, that's how it looked live. Just another example of how we didn't get the breaks tonight.

Second - and this is a pretty serious one, as I had a bit of an argument about this with a VERY drunk individual seated in front of me - is it EVER acceptable to do 'The Wave' at a baseball game? My thought on it is that anybody who incites or participates in 'The Wave' should have their tickets revoked and be ejected from the ballpark. Save that crap for football games. Truth told, if you've ever done 'The Wave' and don't have a good excuse (and the only good excuses are 'I was REALLY hammered' and 'I was 10 years old') we probably can't be friends - if you're doing 'The Wave', that's a fairly good sign that you don't find the game entertaining enough. If that's the case, you can go home whenever you'd like - don't start that stupid crap in the eighth inning in a one-run ballgame. I guess I just needed to get that off my chest - I should make anti-Wave shirts and hand them out at games. Something like a No-Wave sign similar to a no-smoking sign on the front, and "Friends Don't Let Friends Do The Wave - Be A Fan Of The Game" on the back.

I think that the only other place where it's
acceptable to do the wave is at celebrity weddings - but nobody does, which disappoints me greatly. At any rate, yeah, I've noticed it's almost entirely a West of the Mississippi or expansion team thing these days. I'd be in favor of handing out suspensions, fines and/or jail time for any fan who instigates that, and then just give the evil eye to anybody else who goes along with it.

The wave
is so annoying.  It screams, "Hey, we're not really paying attention to the game!  Let's do something completely stupid!"

I even saw the wave at a Cardinals game a couple of years ago.  These idiots made it all the way around the stadium THREE TIMES.  Yes, there are enough idiots in St. Louis for the wave to make it around the stadium three times.

Two more things...
The ball beat Carroll to the 3B's glove. Chavez MAY not have had his foot on the bag -- Drew and Jeff said he didn't, but to me it was inconclusive -- but the throw did beat him.

Agree about the wave.
