NLCS Game #4: Franklin Morales vs Micah Owings

So tonight we have the House of Slytherin in a tight spot, like so:

And in their desperation they come up with ideas like bean Tulo, slide spikes up, and start Jeff Cirillo at second base. Not nice, guys. At any rate, the tables are reversed from this game on September 29 when Arizona was on easy street, and the Rockies needed to win out to stay alive. Arizona decided to follow Jim's advice there, and "kick back, enjoy the last couple of days, and let others stress out for the remainder of the season." Do you think he regrets thinking that now that it's come down to the D-backs stressing out their final hours? Don't let up on these guys, tonight, Frankie. Let's finish this thing.

Go Rockies!

So

...thus I am here to spread my voodoo on the Rockies to send them packing...

I must say, the Mariner side of me is very jealous. You've already made it farther than our 01' team.

Good for several laughs before gametime, at Byrnes' and the Snakes' expense. (Always a plus).

Haha
Im still baffled why Byrnes gets so much love as a 'I wont let the team die' type. In order to back up that supposed attitude, you have to account for your team's suckage.

The Rockies are owning them. Making excuses is pathetic. This isnt Super Bowl 40.

A bit unrelated, but Matt's uncle is up for a job in Pittsburgh..."A possibility for the scouting director's job is Colorado special assignment scout and Uniontown native Dave Holliday. He is the uncle of Rockies left field Matt Holliday."

Yeah but
they made it out like Cirillo was doing what he did before we were ripped off in a certain trade.

You'd think a big offensive boost would bat higher than 8th, not that I recommend Cirillo to bat 3rd or anything.

Morales has the A+ heat tonight
but the curve looks a little less sharp than normal, and no change or sinker thus far.

Perhaps they're trying to keep it simple and cut down on the change-ups, and just have him work two pitches for five innings of success.  If so, I like the strategy.

61% strikes for Morales tonight
which is roughly league average.

I think the one positive about Morales' command is that when he gets strikes, he gets them in bunches, but ditto for balls.  I think that speaks more to his youth and excitability on the mound more than any complete lack of control.  It also shows that that hestitation in his delivery is a real critical piece of rythmn in his delivery.  When he stays calm and composed, he uses a consistent pause and shows solid command, but when he gets a little hyped, his rhythmn gets off.

I think his command issues are more correctable with maturity, and that's why I still think his long term future is brighter than Jimenez'.

by David OhNo on Oct 15, 2007 9:23 PM MDT reply actions

I really don't know
I still go back and forth on them and right now, I'm thinking I've sold Jimenez short worrying about a fourth pitch when the three he has are enough to be lights out. It's a nice debate to have, though.

by Rox Girl on Oct 15, 2007 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

I still think Jimenez has control issues
that have yet to catch up with him.  So long as he K's guys at a rate better than one per nine, he'll be fine, but when you watch the location calls and the actual pitches, it's clear he still only has a rough idea where the ball is heading.

At least he's doing it with A+ stuff, but this is still a potential problem that could keep him from becoming a number one, and more of an unpredictable number three (which is still pretty good, and way better than what we'd expect after his early months in AAA).

I'm reading this Keith Law chat...
on ESPN.com: SPORTSNATION (oooh, capitalization), and he said the Rockies are "the most overrated team in baseball" because they "only won 90 games in the lesser league" and now the media's fawning over them like they're the '39 Yankees.

I think this is pretty much all the East Coast bias we've been complaining about in one paragraph...especially because if the Yanks won 21 out of 22 to get to the series, you think the media wouldn't be fawning over them, not to mention comparing them to the '39 Yankees? That doesn't even get into the lesser league stuff and whether they're now getting too much coverage from the media, as he contends.

by westcoastbias on Oct 15, 2007 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Don't just pick and choose comments
while that one might have been anti-Rockies, Law also called Morales a potential number one starter second only to Kershaw in lefty prospects, praised Tulo for his work and when compared to Jeter said Derek never once played defense as good as Tulo has this year, and both he and Neyer have said the Rockies were one of the best in the National League without the magical streak.

But yeah, east coast hates the Rockies, no respect...

To be truthful, there are far more articles showing how the nation has embraced this team more than they are critical of it, but it must be fun to always feel slighted...

by David OhNo on Oct 15, 2007 10:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Uh...
One week of articles, when they were forced to finally re-evaluate the team.

I just got done re-reading Law's pre-series scouting reports on both teams and forgot how annoying (and inaccurate) it was since the last time I read it (right when it was written).

That said, there has been a lot of positive press this week and it is increasingly relevant and accurate (which is even better).

by MADness on Oct 15, 2007 10:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Rosenthal has been all over the Rockies for weeks
and he's the biggest in the game.  Olney's been on the bandwagon in his blog, Stark and Phillips have both been pro-Rockies for a few weeks.

XM Radio's Charlie Steiner is drooling over Colorado, Buck Martinez has been praising our young pitchers since our trip to Philly before the streak.

Sure, the NY media hasn't been kind, but they don't even play nice with their own teams.  I just think everyone wants the media to fawn all over these guys like we do, and when they don't, we take offense.  Truth is, the Rockies have had plenty of national believers, and especially the ones with the most clought.

" (7:49 PM ET ) Nathan or Papelbon. But Corpas is in the room. That's one of the best sinkers I've ever seen. "

Seattle
My two favorite baseball quotes in a LONG time have come out of Seattle this year.

Ichiro's absolutely hilarious quote about Cleveland and Bavasi's quote about the executive in Florida (was it Beinfast or Samson, I thought it was Samson) - "My mother told me that I can't say anything other than David Samson is an fing idiot, don't say anything at all."

That second quote is one of my all-time favorite quotes.

by MADness on Oct 15, 2007 10:53 PM MDT up reply actions

100% behind that
Seattle is a bipolar city, alot of people think I was misplaced on the earth. Us Seattle fans have an edge. Our Rockies-type site (Lookout Landing) is led by Jeff, and he got in a fight with a mascot at a minor league game this year.

I think it rubs off on Bavasi...I loved that quote.

Good luck Colorado ----
Hey, D-backs fan here --- Very disappointed, I really thought this series would go 6 or 7 games --- No way I thought the Rockies hot streak could continue.

Just want to say good luck in the World Series -- I'll be rooting for you against the Tribe or RedSox.

And by the way, not having seen too many Rockies games this year, Tulowitzki is unbelievable.  I am a huge fan after seeing him up close in this NLCS.

The future is very bright in Colorado.  Hopefully this can develop into a great rivalry through the years.

Can't bear to watch end of the season for my D-backs.... I'm outta here....good luck!

This rivalry should go both ways for the next 4 or 5 years at the least.

It was good having you guys here on the Row for the last few weeks.

BTW, if you want to trade Chris Young to make room for Upton in center I am sure that O'Dowd would return phone calls about it from the D'Backs management.

Just, you know, in case you guys don't want/need him any more, we would be sure to give him a good home.
