NLCS Game #4: Franklin Morales vs Micah Owings
So tonight we have the House of Slytherin in a tight spot, like so:

And in their desperation they come up with ideas like bean Tulo, slide spikes up, and start Jeff Cirillo at second base. Not nice, guys. At any rate, the tables are reversed from this game on September 29 when Arizona was on easy street, and the Rockies needed to win out to stay alive. Arizona decided to follow Jim's advice there, and "kick back, enjoy the last couple of days, and let others stress out for the remainder of the season." Do you think he regrets thinking that now that it's come down to the D-backs stressing out their final hours? Don't let up on these guys, tonight, Frankie. Let's finish this thing.
Go Rockies!

I must say, the Mariner side of me is very jealous. You've already made it farther than our 01' team.

Good for several laughs before gametime, at Byrnes' and the Snakes' expense. (Always a plus).
Haha
The Rockies are owning them. Making excuses is pathetic. This isnt Super Bowl 40.

Morales has the A+ heat tonight
Perhaps they're trying to keep it simple and cut down on the change-ups, and just have him work two pitches for five innings of success. If so, I like the strategy.

61% strikes for Morales tonight
I think the one positive about Morales' command is that when he gets strikes, he gets them in bunches, but ditto for balls. I think that speaks more to his youth and excitability on the mound more than any complete lack of control. It also shows that that hestitation in his delivery is a real critical piece of rythmn in his delivery. When he stays calm and composed, he uses a consistent pause and shows solid command, but when he gets a little hyped, his rhythmn gets off.
I think his command issues are more correctable with maturity, and that's why I still think his long term future is brighter than Jimenez'.
I really don't know
I still think Jimenez has control issues
At least he's doing it with A+ stuff, but this is still a potential problem that could keep him from becoming a number one, and more of an unpredictable number three (which is still pretty good, and way better than what we'd expect after his early months in AAA).
Dontcha think...

I'm reading this Keith Law chat...
I think this is pretty much all the East Coast bias we've been complaining about in one paragraph...especially because if the Yanks won 21 out of 22 to get to the series, you think the media wouldn't be fawning over them, not to mention comparing them to the '39 Yankees? That doesn't even get into the lesser league stuff and whether they're now getting too much coverage from the media, as he contends.
Wow.

Don't just pick and choose comments
But yeah, east coast hates the Rockies, no respect...
To be truthful, there are far more articles showing how the nation has embraced this team more than they are critical of it, but it must be fun to always feel slighted...
Uh...
I just got done re-reading Law's pre-series scouting reports on both teams and forgot how annoying (and inaccurate) it was since the last time I read it (right when it was written).
That said, there has been a lot of positive press this week and it is increasingly relevant and accurate (which is even better).
Rosenthal has been all over the Rockies for weeks
XM Radio's Charlie Steiner is drooling over Colorado, Buck Martinez has been praising our young pitchers since our trip to Philly before the streak.
Sure, the NY media hasn't been kind, but they don't even play nice with their own teams. I just think everyone wants the media to fawn all over these guys like we do, and when they don't, we take offense. Truth is, the Rockies have had plenty of national believers, and especially the ones with the most clought.
Law
" (7:49 PM ET ) Nathan or Papelbon. But Corpas is in the room. That's one of the best sinkers I've ever seen. "
This is why I read his stuff - I like the scouting take on players or teams (even if I think his opinions tend to be idiotic his objective observations have informational value).
He talked later about Corpas as well
shh!!
We've outplayed you right into a sweep.
Wait-- what?? We're losing???

by duke on Oct 15, 2007 11:34 PM MDT reply actions
More like...
I keep telling people: the Rockies have been lucky, but not THAT lucky. They're making those plays and Arizona isn't, and they're taking advantage of those mistakes where Arizona isn't.
by potterhead4 on Oct 15, 2007 11:35 PM MDT up reply actions
I know we would have to have a runner
There's your runner...

Not over yet
It was good having you guys here on the Row for the last few weeks.
BTW, if you want to trade Chris Young to make room for Upton in center I am sure that O'Dowd would return phone calls about it from the D'Backs management.
Just, you know, in case you guys don't want/need him any more, we would be sure to give him a good home.
Naw
by Devin on Oct 16, 2007 12:06 AM MDT up reply actions
Had him once.
OK, so it was only for a few days.
Ok.
Very astute observation.
Man....
If the Dbacks were destined to lose this series, I really wish it would have been in slightly different fashion... leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
But that'll pass. Congratulations on the sweep, much as it pains me to say that 5 letter word, and good luck against the Junior League's 'finest.' I'll still be pulling for your crazy Jebus team. ;-)
I dunno
by jakester @ Purple Row on Oct 16, 2007 12:21 AM MDT up reply actions
Um wow.
As a Denver Resident this is wonderful. Yep, I'm a Brewers fan, but I have to feel the Brewers had a (slight) hand in this amazing story.
I'm rooting for the Rockies, this is wonderful and you (we?) deserve this happiness.
Rockies in 5.
Unprecedented run.
You deserve nothing but pure joy.
