Tuesday Morning Rockpile: A World Series Comes To Denver
And if you want to go, be prepared to wait in line or staring at a screen for some time when tickets go on sale. Or you could spend 12 grand for two box tickets behind the visitors' dugout on 27 Oct.
Maybe by the time the World Series kicks off on 24 October, Jayson Stark will believe this just did happen. I could barely sleep last night. I just kept thinking, "The Rockies are in the World Series. The Rockies are in the World Series. . . ." And I'm still telling myself, "The Rockies are going to the World Series!" Littwin put it best in his latest piece: "When the Rockies go to the World Series - when the Colorado Rockies go to the World Series - all bets are off."
Who's the happiest man on earth right now? How could Todd Helton not be? After so many struggles, he's ready to enter territory Broncos great John Elway had to wait for so long as well.
Also, thank Seth Smith for being this team's good luck charm.
The Rockies are in the World Series!

Anyone know which method of obtaining tickets has a higher probability? The website says they both go to the same central computer - but I'm wondering what the ratio of tellers at the stadium to number of accessible clients online is... any thoughts?

I keep pinching myself....
I love Drew Littleton's NewRockies Logo
Going to the World Series, The Rockies are going to the World Series...still doing the happy dance!
Sweep
"The broom came sailing from somewhere in the outfield decks at Coors Field, flying out of the heart of a mile-high throng of delirium-struck baseball fans. It stuck, handle first, into the outfield grass in right-center field, standing there as a kind of inverted exclamation point to a statement that the hometown Rockies made loudly and oh-so-clearly here Monday night."
Does anyone know if this actually happened or is he just talking about a metaphorical broom? If this did happen does anyone know where i can find apic of it, cause thats awesome?

What's in your watercooler?
As a Sox fan
So yeah, we have no chance against the mightiest of the mighties, that being the true MLB champion, who ever wins the AL...THE real league. No NL club could ever win a World Series, especially a Wild Card team.....Really? Just last year? See I watch ESPN a lot, and I thought the Red Sox won the Series every year for the last 5 years....who knew?
Dear Boston and both New York teams, you can't buy a pennant every year, try as you might.
Hey Redhawk
Um,

Lets just say
I'm not expecting the sweeps to continue in the WS; both teams in the ALCS will be tough. But it should be a great set of games!

8 Days to savor the victory...
I was really nervous about this layoff. Then TBS mentioned that since '69 (IIRC) teams with 5+ days off before the world series are 7 of 10.
Maybe I read it wrong, but it calmed me down.
8 days to heal the bruises, contusions, aches and pains of 163 regular season games, and 7 playoff games.
8 days to rest weary arms after hundreds of innings pitched.
8 days to practice your swing, get your reps, throw on the side, check your mechanics.
8 days to spend with family that they've seen little of since February, in some cases.
8 days to celebrate, for the fans, the improbable, impossible, unbelievablem, undeniable; for the players, what they believed in all along, what they've worked all their lives towards.
and then, 9 days (or less) to history.
Sunk in yet?
Good luck charm
is there a way we can find
Good question
Well...
Then he did it last night. So twice this season, but still, 2 out of 11 isn't all that bad.
Since I'm not primarily a Rockies fan, I don't care enough to look back at previous seasons. Sorry. lol

This is mostly a myth we like to perpetuate, but
The first and only time he did it wasn't until September 9, against the Padres. However, in June, against the Astros, he did double twice after getting visibly angry by an HBP.
There was this game in 2006, on September 19, against Matt Cain and the Giants where Cain hit him, Matt got mad and hit this mammoth shot his next AB, jawing to Cain all the time. Coincidently, exactly one year later at the beginning of this run he hit 2 homeruns against the Dodgers and then was hit by a pitch.
Earlier in 2006, there was this May game against the Cardinals where Matt got the HBP his first time up and then homered twice.
There aren't any other cases in his career where it's happened that the HBP precedes an HR besides last night, but several where HR's precede HBP's. I'm going to have to tally the stats, but I think you'll find Matt's stats to go way up in games where he's hit, although I'm willing to bet it's more an effect of teams having a game plan of foolishly trying to challenge him inside rather than some sort of Hulklike superhuman prowess.
Sometimes
LF Matt Holliday: MVP. Not great defensively, but still average to slightly above when you grade him against the rest of the dogs in the league. Byrnes has him beat defensively, but everytime he comes up be afraid. Oh, and don't make him angry (HBP). He has a bad habit of hitting in 450+ if you tick him off.
Then last night, I was sitting there laughing when Owings hit 'em. Turned to my roommate, said half serious- "Game's over. Holliday's going to crush one his next AB." Sometimes, you just know...
Congrats and best wishes
Now now....
Actually....
Come along Marlins fans (they won't take up too much room and they'll bring the pina coladas).
Hop on Nationals fans, and weclome aboard Texas Rangers rooters.
This one is for all the teams about whom it's been said "they'll never win it all."
You really never do know.....

Can us Dbacks fans stay onboard?
Besides, the Royals, O's and Pirates have won too. Dbacks, Rox and Injuns are proving this year that you don't have to buy all your players to be good.
Please? We'll bring tequila??

Haha
Amen, brother.
Knowing Padres fans, I'm surprised it was posted in a blog, rather than a MySpace bulletin.
But I digress. There's a reason we're the Senior League. We don't need no wussy designated hitter. We don't sit around, fat and lazy, trying to hit the ball out of the park. We manufacture runs.
Beat the AL, Rockies. My brief bout of bitterness is already behind me.

I'm a fan of an AL team
I feel loyalty to teams that build their teams in what I feel is the "right" way. Teams like the Rockies, D-Backs, Tigers, Indians, they prove that you don't have to spend $200 million to compete. They also give hope to a team like mine. The Orioles are hopelessly trying to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees through spending, and they keep failing. It's awful. But if they ever get their acts together, they could beat the Yankees and the Red Sox without spending the money. And I know that by looking at teams like the Indians and the Tigers. And those are the teams I feel affection for, not teams that just happen to be in my league or division.
Yeah, okay.

Aaacck!!!
This would be totally against the Rules. Bad. Bad.
Peace. Love. Rockies.
At least it's a joke for you...
Celebration! And a Monfort Rant!
Now...did anyone else dislike the Monforts raising the NL Trophy first? McGregor had the right idea...as soon as he got it, he passed it right off to Todd. Todd's been the one who has been fighting for this organization for the past 10 seasons, giving his all, providing much-needed veteran leadership, and up until this season, was the only reason anyone outside of Colorado even knew the Rockies existed. I really hope that, if the Rockies do go on to win the World Series, that the Monforts get it right and give the Commissioner's Trophy to Todd to raise first.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
As for me
Well, we know that the Monforts are tools
Monforts getting booed
I have been a fan of going at it w/ building from within for awhile and I thought it would be a good plan. Didn't expect it to work this well this fast, but I think the Rockies have a real chance to be perennial contenders. We definitely need to keep our talent evaluators around, and they deserve a lot of the credit for this too.
As far as the players giving praise to God or even the Monforts, I have no problem w/ it. Thats a personal belief of theirs and I think its ok to share it if someone is asking you questions. I'm not sure whether God cares about baseball games and the final outcome, but I'm sure He cares about the players on both teams. Whatever the reason is, it has been a crazy ride and it has happened in the wildest way. I just hope to enjoy it all the way to a WS Championship!
I received an e-mail
In a moving moment, the honorary first ball was thrown by the 10-year old sister of Highlands Ranch teenager Kyle Blakeman. You may have read about Kyle's story in the Denver Post and the number 64 and the fact that Hurdle started writing "64" on his lineup card in September (when the Rockies had 64 losses) for every game thereafter. Here it is (a very moving story):
After reading the story, consider the following from last night:
* Hurdle took a gamble in the 4th inning and lifted the pitcher, Franklin Morales, after throwing 64 pitches.
* In inning # 4, the Rockies scored 6 runs.
* The final score was 6 - 4.
Kind of gives me goosebumps.
Go Rockies!
Good article
Touching article, recommended read for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

I want a poster...
I want a poster with Todd Helton, his hands raised in the air as he has just secured the final out in Game 4. The joy on his face is priceless.
Oh, and I want the poster to include Eric Byrnes flat on his face behind him as he tried to slide in to beat the throw. Because if there is irony in this world, that is it right there.

Here are some photos of the game and celebration. A really good one of Helton with his head held high!! (Byrnes is there too!!)
I assume the Post and News have photos somewhere. Please post if you know where.
GO ROCKS!!!

Eric Byrnes
But when he overthrows, or hits a fly ball, or misses the line drive...um, never mind.
We love him because of his exciting play, and his fire, and his attitude. Sometimes he's a dork, but he's our dork, ya know?

Nothing wrong
Good player, and probably a good leader. Just not the right things to say given the situations.

Eric Byrnes mouthy
Outfielder Eric Byrnes was booed loudly every time he came to the plate in Colorado, where on Saturday he suggested the Rockies were lucky to have a 2-0 lead in the series.
"Were they booing?" he deadpanned Monday night. "I kind of had fun with it, enjoyed it, played with the fans in the outfield.
"Look, I'm always going to speak my mind. I spoke my mind the other day, and I was telling the truth. I stand up here today and I'll tell you the exact same truth.
"One of the main reasons we didn't win this series is because I didn't hit (expletive). Simple as that. And your middle-of-the-order guy has to produce. It definitely started with me."
