Tuesday Morning Rockpile: A World Series Comes To Denver

And if you want to go, be prepared to wait in line or staring at a screen for some time when tickets go on sale. Or you could spend 12 grand for two box tickets behind the visitors' dugout on 27 Oct.

Maybe by the time the World Series kicks off on 24 October, Jayson Stark will believe this just did happen. I could barely sleep last night. I just kept thinking, "The Rockies are in the World Series. The Rockies are in the World Series. . . ." And I'm still telling myself, "The Rockies are going to the World Series!" Littwin put it best in his latest piece: "When the Rockies go to the World Series - when the Colorado Rockies go to the World Series - all bets are off."

Who's the happiest man on earth right now? How could Todd Helton not be? After so many struggles, he's ready to enter territory Broncos great John Elway had to wait for so long as well.

Also, thank Seth Smith for being this team's good luck charm.

The Rockies are in the World Series!

Awesome huh? Every time I walk past a news-stand it hits me again, and each time I'm still somewhat shocked!

Anyone know which method of obtaining tickets has a higher probability? The website says they both go to the same central computer - but I'm wondering what the ratio of tellers at the stadium to number of accessible clients online is... any thoughts?

I keep pinching myself....
I still can't believe that they are there!!!!!  Oh my gosh! I had all my family watching last night and everyone at work as well! So, just another two weeks of not talking and only texting my boyfriend and we'll be the World Series Champs!

Sweep
SI.com has the following opening paragraph in an article by John Donavan about the Rockies win last night;
"The broom came sailing from somewhere in the outfield decks at Coors Field, flying out of the heart of a mile-high throng of delirium-struck baseball fans. It stuck, handle first, into the outfield grass in right-center field, standing there as a kind of inverted exclamation point to a statement that the hometown Rockies made loudly and oh-so-clearly here Monday night."
Does anyone know if this actually happened or is he just talking about a metaphorical broom? If this did happen does anyone know where i can find apic of it, cause thats awesome?

What's in your watercooler?
And can we have some?  Way to go guys.  It's good to see the team with the fans who care make it all the way.  Despite all that "AAAA" crap, either us or the Indians are gonna have their hands full.  Good luck!!

As a Sox fan
I'm sure like many others reality isn't a big thing for you, but just so you will know, and can spread it around......The Rockies played you this year...at Fenway by the way...record: Rockies 2, Boston 1.  Against the Yankees: 3-0. @ Orioles 2-1. vs. Tampa Bay 2-1.  @ Toronto Blue Jays not so great 0-3. Rockies vs the AL East 9-6

So yeah, we have no chance against the mightiest of the mighties, that being the true MLB champion, who ever wins the AL...THE real league. No NL club could ever win a World Series, especially a Wild Card team.....Really? Just last year? See I watch ESPN a lot, and I thought the Red Sox won the Series every year for the last 5 years....who knew?

Dear Boston and both New York teams, you can't buy a pennant every year, try as you might.

8 Days to savor the victory...
And back to work. 4 more wins

I was really nervous about this layoff. Then TBS mentioned that since '69 (IIRC) teams with 5+ days off before the world series are 7 of 10.

Maybe I read it wrong, but it calmed me down.

8 days to heal the bruises, contusions, aches and pains of 163 regular season games, and 7 playoff games.

8 days to rest weary arms after hundreds of innings pitched.

8 days to practice your swing, get your reps, throw on the side, check your mechanics.

8 days to spend with family that they've seen little of since February, in some cases.

8 days to celebrate, for the fans, the improbable, impossible, unbelievablem, undeniable; for the players, what they believed in all along, what they've worked all their lives towards.

and then, 9 days (or less) to history.

Good question
After he got HBP I thought to myself "I bet he'll homer in this game"  I wish I had told my wife that so I would have confirmation.  He does seem to hit a lot more in games with a hbp though.

by Blake20th on Oct 16, 2007 12:35 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...
I was curious about this too, so I did some checking around. As far as I can tell, it happened just once in the regular season. September 11 against the Phillies. He was hit by a pitch nine other times, and didn't homer in any of the other games, except September 19 against the Dodgers, where he got plunked after hitting two HRs earlier in the game.

Then he did it last night. So twice this season, but still, 2 out of 11 isn't all that bad.

Since I'm not primarily a Rockies fan, I don't care enough to look back at previous seasons. Sorry. lol

by azdb7 on Oct 16, 2007 12:56 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is mostly a myth we like to perpetuate, but
In 2007:

The first and only time he did it wasn't until September 9, against the Padres. However, in June, against the Astros, he did double twice after getting visibly angry by an HBP.

There was this game in 2006, on September 19, against Matt Cain and the Giants where Cain hit him, Matt got mad and hit this mammoth shot his next AB, jawing to Cain all the time. Coincidently, exactly one year later at the beginning of this run he hit 2 homeruns against the Dodgers and then was hit by a pitch.

Earlier in 2006, there was this May game against the Cardinals where Matt got the HBP his first time up and then homered twice.

There aren't any other cases in his career where it's happened that the HBP precedes an HR besides last night, but several where HR's precede HBP's. I'm going to have to tally the stats, but I think you'll find Matt's stats to go way up in games where he's hit, although I'm willing to bet it's more an effect of teams having a game plan of foolishly trying to challenge him inside rather than some sort of Hulklike superhuman prowess.

by Rox Girl on Oct 16, 2007 12:58 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sometimes
The myth is just much more interesting.  It makes me laugh though, I posted this about him in the Rockies NLCS guide over on the SnakePit:

LF Matt Holliday:  MVP.  Not great defensively, but still average to slightly above when you grade him against the rest of the dogs in the league.  Byrnes has him beat defensively, but everytime he comes up be afraid.  Oh, and don't make him angry (HBP).  He has a bad habit of hitting in 450+ if you tick him off.

Then last night, I was sitting there laughing when Owings hit 'em.  Turned to my roommate, said half serious- "Game's over. Holliday's going to crush one his next AB."  Sometimes, you just know...

I do think we should share this run with fans of all the so-called "have-nots".  There's plenty of room on the bandwagon for supporters of the Devil rays, Royals, O's and Pirates.

Hop on Nationals fans, and weclome aboard Texas Rangers rooters.

Can us Dbacks fans stay onboard?
I figure, it's only fair, since the Marlins have already won two titles, and our 2004 season was waaay worse than any Marlins season so far. :(

Besides, the Royals, O's and Pirates have won too. Dbacks, Rox and Injuns are proving this year that you don't have to buy all your players to be good.

Knowing Padres fans, I'm surprised it was posted in a blog, rather than a MySpace bulletin.

But I digress. There's a reason we're the Senior League. We don't need no wussy designated hitter. We don't sit around, fat and lazy, trying to hit the ball out of the park. We manufacture runs.

Beat the AL, Rockies. My brief bout of bitterness is already behind me.

It's all true!
Man, I'm tired enough of hearing how the AL is the superior league that I'd cheer for anyone from the NL to win it!  Okay, two exceptions for that.  I'd cheer for the Mariners (my sister writes a Mariners blog) and I wouldn't cheer for the Giants.  But I at least wouldn't actively cheer against the Giants.

Well, not much.

by Devin on Oct 17, 2007 1:19 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm a fan of an AL team
But I personally don't feel any loyalty to the American League in general. Nor do I feel that either league is superior; they're just different.

I feel loyalty to teams that build their teams in what I feel is the "right" way. Teams like the Rockies, D-Backs, Tigers, Indians, they prove that you don't have to spend $200 million to compete. They also give hope to a team like mine. The Orioles are hopelessly trying to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees through spending, and they keep failing. It's awful. But if they ever get their acts together, they could beat the Yankees and the Red Sox without spending the money. And I know that by looking at teams like the Indians and the Tigers. And those are the teams I feel affection for, not teams that just happen to be in my league or division.

Celebration! And a Monfort Rant!
So before I get bashing...woohoo, ROCKIES WIN THE PENNANT!

Now...did anyone else dislike the Monforts raising the NL Trophy first?  McGregor had the right idea...as soon as he got it, he passed it right off to Todd.  Todd's been the one who has been fighting for this organization for the past 10 seasons, giving his all, providing much-needed veteran leadership, and up until this season, was the only reason anyone outside of Colorado even knew the Rockies existed. I really hope that, if the Rockies do go on to win the World Series, that the Monforts get it right and give the Commissioner's Trophy to Todd to raise first.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Monforts getting booed
kind of made me laugh for a minute.  I mean the team just wins the NL pennant and the owners are being booed.  Then I felt bad and thought they deserve to enjoy it too, maybe they are cheap, but lets make them prove it over the next couple of years before going too crazy on them.

I have been a fan of going at it w/ building from within for awhile and I thought it would be a good plan.  Didn't expect it to work this well this fast, but I think the Rockies have a real chance to be perennial contenders.  We definitely need to keep our talent evaluators around, and they deserve a lot of the credit for this too.

As far as the players giving praise to God or even the Monforts, I have no problem w/ it.  Thats a personal belief of theirs and I think its ok to share it if someone is asking you questions.  I'm not sure whether God cares about baseball games and the final outcome, but I'm sure He cares about the players on both teams.  Whatever the reason is, it has been a crazy ride and it has happened in the wildest way.  I just hope to enjoy it all the way to a WS Championship!

I received an e-mail
from, I guess, a regular site reader who wanted me to post the following:
I was at the game last night to watch the Rockies take their first-ever pennant.

In a moving moment, the honorary first ball was thrown by the 10-year old sister of Highlands Ranch teenager Kyle Blakeman.  You may have read about Kyle's story in the Denver Post  and the number 64 and the fact that Hurdle started writing "64" on his lineup card in September (when the Rockies had 64 losses) for every game thereafter.  Here it is (a very moving story):

After reading the story, consider the following from last night:

    * Hurdle took a gamble in the 4th inning and lifted the pitcher, Franklin Morales, after throwing 64 pitches.
    * In inning # 4, the Rockies scored 6 runs.
    * The final score was 6 - 4.

Kind of gives me goosebumps.

Go Rockies!

Re: Eric Byrnes flat on his face and irony
On yesterday's morning call-in to KOA, Clint Hurdle used the words "dripping with irony" to describe Byrne's desperate attempt to make it to first base.  I do admire Byrne's tenacity and attempt to light a fire.  Personally, I didn't think his comments were that bad and were taken out of context.  Why, though, does he insist on leaving his feet when he makes a throw from the outfield attempting to cut off a runner.  The only parallel that I can think of is a discus thrower.  Very odd.

by DakotaBoy on Oct 17, 2007 9:10 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Eric Byrnes
...because when he makes a spectacular throw with the whole somersault thing, it's amazing!  And when he hits a great home run with the whole arms in the air, jump toward the first base line, it's so exciting!  And when he gets the front of his jersey all dirty from hustling to get a ball, it's just thrilling.

But when he overthrows, or hits a fly ball, or misses the line drive...um, never mind.

We love him because of his exciting play, and his fire, and his attitude.  Sometimes he's a dork, but he's our dork, ya know?

Nothing wrong
with intensity and passion.  I think people are on his case after making the "outplaying" and "I'm going to lead by example" comments, but not really doing anything in the series (which makes his intensity look foolish at times.)

Yeah, he's a little mouthy sometimes in an effort to fire up the team.  Here's what he said about the booing.  (Good attitude, I think, and he faces up to his lack of offense in the game.)

Outfielder Eric Byrnes was booed loudly every time he came to the plate in Colorado, where on Saturday he suggested the Rockies were lucky to have a 2-0 lead in the series.

"Were they booing?" he deadpanned Monday night. "I kind of had fun with it, enjoyed it, played with the fans in the outfield.

"Look, I'm always going to speak my mind. I spoke my mind the other day, and I was telling the truth. I stand up here today and I'll tell you the exact same truth.

"One of the main reasons we didn't win this series is because I didn't hit (expletive). Simple as that. And your middle-of-the-order guy has to produce. It definitely started with me."
