That answer is obvious,
I actually wonder where it ranks in MLB's history. This had all the elements of some of the classics.

It reminds me
of the 1995 division series, game 5 between the Ms and Yankees.

Might not be as much on the line, and this game had no Ken Griffey Jr...but still.

Also the WS between Arizona and Yankees, when Arizona came back in an inning to win on a Gonzalez hit. Again, not as much on the line, but still.

Very glad I could be a part of it. I really appreciate you guys putting up with me. Rockies along with the Brewers and of course the Mariners, are in my top 3 teams.

Now DFA Jorge Julio.

Really, that's all I wanted to say. The team just wouldn't quit, and you fully deserve that post-season spot. Now, be a good bunch of folk and lose to the Phillies, because we do not want to be facing you in the NLCS. :-)

Poem
I just posted this poem over at UItR... it's by Shel Silverstein and it seemed appropriate:

"Listen to the mustn's, child.

Listen to the don'ts.

Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts.

Listen to the never haves... then listen close to me.

Anything can happen, child.

ANYTHING can be."

OMFG
I went home after Julio gave up the homer. Then I opened Gameday, naturally needing to know the end. Hoffman came in. Kaz doubled. Tulo doubled. Right about the time "in play, run(s)" popped up on Matty, my friend Nick called and yelled, "GET BACK HERE!" I grabbed my things and went sprinting back to the TV room, then got there just as they began to scream and whoop. He's an O's fan, but he was rooting with me.

I went belting up the stairs in time to see a mosh pit on the TV. I screamed and threw myself on Nick. I shook. I launched myself across the room to hug his friend, who I don't even know that well. I shrieked at the top of my lungs. My legs would not support me, I fell down. A few people came up the stairs to ask if I was all right, since I was screaming bloody murder. Nick was like, "The Rockies made the playoffs, it's cool."

I screamed. I threw myself in his arms again. I held on. I fell to my knees. I had earlier promised to freak out on an epic level if the Rockies won, and they did.

The Holliday call was justice for screwing Atkins out of the game-winning HR.

LONG LIVE THE PURPLE FEVER!!!!

Although I am still not happy with you guys for trading Thatcher... luckily it didn't cost us.  (I watched Thatcher pitch here in Nashville and knew he was good, and wondered why in the world the Brewers let him go.)

A fitting end to a most improbable run
The Phillies are a great team, and I don't want to take anything away from them, but I like our strength on strength matchup more than the mental haunting of returning to Wrigley.

by David OhNo on Oct 1, 2007 10:48 PM MDT reply actions

The guys on SportsCenter
said the Phillies have a long list of great players..and the Rockies have Helton who hasn't ever been to the playoffs, and Jeff Francis who got killed in his last 2 games against the Phillies....and we haven't got a prayer's chance in hell.

Sounds just what this team thrives on!

My story
My wife and I normally go to trivia at a local pub on tuesday nights...it was tonight due to an irish singer being in town tomorrow.  I told the folks that i might be there around 8 when the game ended.  My wife called to see if I was going to come right after Kaz doubled.  I wasn't optimistic...every feeling i had this evening had been expended by then.

And then Tulo doubled, and I hoped.

Holliday's triple...as soon as he rolled into third, I knew we had it won.  We had two outs to get a fly ball to the outfield....it had to be.  Somehow we had tied the game off of Trevor Hoffman, Mr. Automatic for the NL.

And Carroll delivered.  And I screamed like a five year old, and jumped up and down in my house.  And then I started getting phone calls.

Best sports moment ever.  Better than U.S. soccer beating Portugal in 2002, better than the last Redskins Super Bowl win.  Best Ever.

Wow
I don't really cheer for any particuliar team but even I ended up cheering for Colorado by the end. Mostly for Helton to finally get some postseason experience.

But wow, that is one of the best games I've ever watched even if there were a lot of mistakes made. I don't know how I am supposed to sleep now.

Those Yankees that gave up the "Shot Heard Round The World" won their last 15 to close out the season, but yeah.

I figured I was bad luck for the website seeing as Colorado was 17 - 23 the last time I posted here, but I just couldn't help myself - not to mention the ill-fated Purple Row chatroom the first day of the season.

But again, I couldn't help myself.

So if somehow, against all odds, Colorado loses to the Phillies, it's my fault, okay?

This is amazing!!!
I remmber when the Rocks were in the playoffs the last time. What's the same is that feeling that the game is never over, that they'll come back - and they did! What's different is that we knew back then that they had no chance against the braves. This time, I don't see why they can't go all the way.

As a Broncos fan, this doesn't quite match the superbowls (yet). Although, I have been giggling spontaneously for about the last 2 hours. Notice how the talking heads on ESPN now refer to the Beard as "Future Hall of Famer?"

I wish my Dad was still here to see this, because he would really, really love this team.

It's been such a great ride, I can't wait to see what happens next.

Go Rockies!!!

Never lost hope...
My best friend and I ordered mlb.tv together in March. We've watched almost every game of the season, hanging on every pitch. We've been going to games together for years, and bringing a sign almost every time that read "Rockies in October". We've been mocked by people for years, people saying the Rockies would never win, people saying that the "loosing culture" was too much to overcome. This seals it.

I couldn't sleep last night, couldn't eat all day, paced back and forth through the whole game. Almost ripped my rox hat apart on several occasions. Watching Holliday slide in safely set us off into the girliest celebration ever. Jumping up and down together, screaming, hugging. I'm just now cooling down after running up and down my street yelling about our win. What a night.

It's been great sharing the ups and downs of the season with you cats. What a season, what a team. It's not over yet. ROCKIES IN OCTOBER!

Juuuust a bit outside.

Rockies NLDS Wallpaper Up
Over in the Diaries section.  I haven't had the time to do one since June, but I just had to make some to celebrate...I made time for it this time, dammit!  :)  Go check them out!

Man...this feels great.  When the Avs won the Stanley Cup in 2001, I was happy, but in an average way.  Tonight, I got to be happy in an ecstatic way.  10 years of being the only Rockies fan has finally paid off!  And in what a way!

11 more wins, boys!  Go Rockies!

by oo_nrb on Oct 2, 2007 12:54 AM MDT reply actions

I'm spent
What a night at the ballpark.

The only thing I have to add is this:

This is the night Rockies fans came of age.  It was so intense in there -- real baseball fans hanging on every pitch.  Loudness throught -- never prompted by those stupid "get loud!" commands.  A few folks tried to start a wave and they were shouted down -- no waves in our park tonight.  This is about baseball, brother!

I've been to many big games at Yankee Stadium -- this one was every bit as intense.  It was flat out awesome.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 2, 2007 12:55 AM MDT reply actions

One more thing
If Jorge Julio gets the ball in any close playoff game, every nice thing I'm currently thinking about Hurdle will be retracted.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 2, 2007 12:58 AM MDT reply actions

Holy shit
Ok as a Yankee fan and only being 21 I have not yet endured my team failing in the regular season. For the last 13 years of my life the Yanks have made it in. So personally I question myself not knowing how I would react to a losing season(s). I mean I follow the Giants but that's a one day affair, baseball is everyday. Basketball is my heart and the Nets punt it every year.

But as most baseball enthusiasts, I was compelled to sit and watch the game tonight. However due to unforseen circumstances I was left tubeless and kept track of the game from the 9th inn. on, on MLB's Gameday. I've been a constant over at Pinstripe alley. But for some reason I never swung by this blog. I finally did after the Rox came back in dramatic fashion (I was pulling for you guys even though we were swept earlier in June or July).

I wanted to read some of the posts you guys put down just to gauge the fans and see how big Colorado baseball was to some. Well first I was shocked to see over 600 someodd posts between threads. And after I got through some of the early posts I skipped to the good part lol. I mean it was so much fun to see everyone say "fuck this, when does spring training start?" lol Which is completely normal after your team goes down 2 runs in xtra.

But after you guys came back and everyone was happy again it really showed that baseball isn't just everything to me or Yankee Red Sox fans. But that it means everything to everyone who relishes in the excitement. As a diehard Yankee fan I would love to congratulate the Rockies org. and fans who never peeled their eyes off their games. You make me feel guilty for being in the post-season every yr. and expecting a World Championship on top of it lol. That being said I want to wish you the worst luck because by no means do I want the Bronx Bombers in Colorado. Although another early post-season bow out will make me a Rockie fan for the time being.

Have fun slugging it out with Philly. And I'd also like to add that Todd Helton deserves this chance. he looked dumbfounded on the postgame interview, it was awesome. I can't believe it only Oct. 2.

October baseball is here!!!

by yankeesRfirst on Oct 2, 2007 1:17 AM MDT reply actions

I cried...
I've kept up with this blog for a long time but really felt like I had to say something for the first time...and I'm still speechless. I am drained from this weekend of baseball and I am probably going to fail out of school because of it, but I've never been so happy before that I've cried...and it happened tonight. It was amazing to witness the transition in the crowd at Coors over the last few weeks. On Friday night, someone told me that they were going to beat my head in if I didn't sit down when I was cheering in the 7th. I've never left a ballpark so upset by my team's fans. Needless to say, I didn't come across that problem tonight. (I also wanted to agree with BroJB--no wave tonight was awesome). Finally, the quote of the day comes from The Beard, "I have no idea how we won that game tonight." Seems like he was pretty speechless too.

congratulations, Rockies!
You've got at least one Baltimore Orioles fan on your postseason bandwagon.

Since I'd decided a week ago that I was really pulling for you guys -- the guts shown in making the run, Helton long being one of my favorite players, Tulowitzki reminding me of Cal Ripken -- I thought Jorge Julio was, in fact, haunting me. Sorry about Julio, and I don't care how good his regular season was, I would pray to not see him in a pivotal moment in the postseason.

But, congrats. Now kill the Phils!

by SC @ Purple Row on Oct 2, 2007 4:45 AM MDT reply actions

nope
but I'd be shocked if Julio made it.......I'm betting we'll carry 11 pitchers:

Both Cook and Hirsh could be back for the NLCS if the Rockies make it that far.....(knock on wood)

by sg8335aa on Oct 2, 2007 8:21 AM MDT up reply actions

Also
Willie T could be back as well.

The emergence of Jimenez and Morales, almost makes me hope Cook or Hirsch don't make it back...they will be rusty and there is no rehab games to get them sharp....Arizona training camp isn't the same.

AND...what about Mark Redman? He's actually out pitched Fogg the last couple weeks...he's a lefty...could also pitch in relief if pushed.

I assume Stewart, Koshanski, Barmes, & Q are all left off the playoff roster and Seth Smith is put on.  Baker left on as he's had most of the RH pinch hit at bats in September, and only cause the Rockies will be carrying an extra batter.

Resign Kazuo Matsui! Hurdle is still an idiot!

roster
First, congrats from a Texan/Astros fan who's been tracking the Rocks all year after what 'Stros fans now call "The Trade". (Which became "The End" for our GM.) Our family loved Willy T and my daughter still grieves over losing "he's so cute" Taylor Buchholz.

2 questions & a comment related to the 3 ex-'Stros who came over in "The Trade".  Some of the devoted fans on this board should know the answers, I figure:

  1.  A TBS announcer said Willy T was in Fla. instructional league working to come back for the playoffs.  Is that right?
  2.  Taylor B. got the Rox out of a man-on-2B, 0 out jam when he relieved Fogg.  His stats as a starter sucked this year, but his middle reliever stats were pretty good.  With 2 rookie starters & Fogg not looking so sharp Mon. night, isn't it likely Buchholz will be on the roster as a middle reliever?  Boy does my daughter hope so.
  3.  I was hiking in RMNP & slipped on a wet rock the day Hirsch took one off his leg.  We both broke our right fibulas.  He pitched 6 innings; I walked 2.5 mi. on mine.  I'm about 90% healed, but no way I could push off it enough to pitch a lot of rehab throws or 6 innings in a game.  But Hirsch is younger & has more training resources, so he may be 100% healed. Still, my 2 cents worth on that:  he's a rookie, too, just like Jiminez & Morales. You don't gain much experience if he comes back, he was inconsistent anyway, there are no minors rehab starts available, and you don't need 5 playoff starters.  I can't imagine they'd try to bring him back unless another starter gets hurt in the 1st round.

by strosnrocks on Oct 2, 2007 9:07 AM MDT reply actions

Quick Responses....
They say both Cook and Hirsh "could" be ready by the NLCS if the rockies make it that far (but wouldn't not be available for the Phillies series).

Yes Wily T is trying to be ready for tomorrow....late word is that he will be (but I'm guessing we'll hear about a final decision later today)

I sure hope Buch makes the final roster....he deserves it (though he'd like by the last 1-2 guys out of the pen).  However, with all the offense of the Phillies, we may need him.

by sg8335aa on Oct 2, 2007 9:16 AM MDT up reply actions

I just post above
I should have waited..
  1. Willie T: reports are he's close.  I like Tulo in the 2 hole batting....does Hurdle drop Kaz or Tulo down the batting order? or Willie?
  2. Bucky: I would be shocked if he's not one of the relievers on the 25 man playoff roster.
  3. Hirsh: I totally agree on this one.  I'm actually hoping he's not coming back this year...nice to have him in case of injury, but Jimenez and Morales have done great jobs, and have been more dominate (if also youthfully inconsistent) then Hirsch was.  No rehab starts just seems to me to be a handcuff to a comeback right now.
Resign Kazuo Matsui! Hurdle is still an idiot!

by Redhawk on Oct 2, 2007 9:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Bucholtz
How could he not be on the playoff roster?  He's the first guy Clint turned to yesterday and has been rock solid in middle and long relief.

He's a no doubter.

As for Julio -- I'd love to see him left off and replaced with Ramirez or, to a lesser degree, Redman.

One final thing re: Willie T -- it's vital he gets back because he will restore some effectiveness to the pinch hitting situation.  With Spillborghs and Sullivan splitting most games, we've been left with Stewart, Koshansky and Smith as the pinch hitters.  I doubt if any of those guys is on the playoff roster (though Smith deserves a thought or two), so we need Spilly and Sullivan on the bench for pinch hitting duty.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 2, 2007 9:48 AM MDT reply actions

Speier will replace Julio.....

Remember, Speier wasn't on the 25 man roster before September (he was a callup).

Some love for the unsung heroes
So much to absorb from last night.  before it all gets away from me, a shout out to some guys who may get overlooked:
  • Seth Smith.  that triple was HUGE
  • Ryan Speier, Jeremy Affeldt, Taylor Bucholtz, Latroy Hawkins -- Quietly and effectively did their jobs
  • Ramon Ortiz -- The guy hasn't pitched in ages.  Gets the ball in what could have been a demoralizing situation and finishes off the Padres.  Big.
  • Kaz Matsui -- For my money, a criticial moment of the game was his AB in the 6th to put the Rox up.  He was fooled badly on two pitches and managed to pull it together to get the sac fly.  That was massive.
  • Tulo in the field.  He made some ridiculous plays which we've grown to view as routine.
  • The fans who stood above the Padres pen during Peavy's warmups and got inside his head.  That's called home field advantage baby!

Amazing win
I could not believe that game.  I was tempted to go to bed early, after the Julio blow up, and I turned back on in just enough time to see Holliday heading to 3rd.  I've got to hand it to this team, no hanging their heads and no quitting.  The crowd looked even crazier than the one I was in on Sunday.  The fans never gave up either and I know that helped.

Hurdle deserves some credit for keeping the guys up and playing hard til the end.  I know we all disagree w/ his pitching moves, and some others, but the reality is there are very few managers that are good w/ pitchers.  I didn't think Baylor was very good at that either.  I think his never say die attitude did affect the team.

I also want to say that I had a feeling this would come sooner or later.  I didn't think this year, but I knew we were stockpiling talent and the farm system was the way to go.  I liked the Twins and A's systems and giving them a chance on most years.  The Marlins won a couple championships, but bought them and then dismantled the team.  I'm not sure I would enjoy that.  I like getting to know these guys early and having a chance to be competitive for years.

LETS PROVE ALL THE "EXPERTS" WRONG!!!

By the way, does anyone know if there are any tickets left for either scheduled game at Coors?
