World Series Game #2: Jimenez vs Schilling
Go Rockies!
Okay, so tonight we've got the fireballer, the Sox have the finesse guy (so weird to consider Schilling a finesse pitcher) which means that we get the thirteen runs, they get the one. Everybody got the plan straight? Good.
One other note. To all Rockies fans, please watch the denigrating names, calling opposing pitchers d-----bags or similar things will get your comments deleted. Second, to all lurking Red Sox fans, be careful to respect this site as a Rockies fan gathering place, and leave your cheering for the Sox on other sites. My fuse is much shorter tonight.
Thank you. Go Rockies!

Go Rox!
Just kidding. I just want an exciting game really. A win would be better.
And agreed, BoSox fans feel free to contribute, but some of those comments the other night were just annoying. Prodding is not necessary. The ECM (east coast media) does it enough for us.

Simulator says Rockies win tonight
Vegas Odds: Red Sox 65.16%
Log5: Red Sox 64.67%
Well, after last nights schalacking(sp?) I am a little bit worried about the simulators output tonight. Of course, the simulator does not get emotionally effected when determining it's odds, like Vegas does. But with the Log5 method and Vegas stacking up against the Rockies, I am a bit nervous on it's Game #2 performance. Good luck!
vr, Xeifrank
Corporate Suits, sigh.
and this came from my SBN overlord:
Yep, looks like I totally screwed the coverage for up through Game one up on both sides. Pitching and hitting. I feel like the Rockies and myself have something in common this World Series.
But what the bigwigs don't know is that the Rox Girl is a free spirit, man. She does what she wants. She's like the Rickey of blogging. She can't be contained by definitions and posting limits. It's just not going to happen. End rant. Go Rockies!

42-10: Super Bowl, 1988. Broncos jump out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Redskins score a record 35 points in the second quarter and 7 in the fourth to beat Elway and the Broncs. Timmy Smith, in his first ever NFL start, rushes for a SB record 204 yards.

Objectively
You realize the Red Sox have several players on their bench who would be the 3rd and 4th highest players on our team. That said their experience at the plate and patience has far exceeded ours.
Hopefully we can win enough to take it to six (since I have game 5 tix) but I do not see us winning. Our pitching, payroll and offense is not good enough for this stage. Yet
I think a year or two will bring out the prime of this team. Right now we throw rookies and guys who spent considerable time in the minors in WS games.
Make sure to treat people from Boston like crap this weekend and hopefully their visit will be sad and expensive. They'll incur nosebleeds, headaches, altitude sickness and maybe even some food poisoning.

by Arma Virumque Cano on Oct 26, 2007 11:29 AM MDT up reply actions
You're treading on dangerous ground here....
Firstly, that's the problem with you New Yorkers: you confuse "New York City" with "America". How very typical a comment to make than for a New Yorker to assume the rest of the country bows down to your city and considers it the center of the world, as you do. WAKE UP! Would it shock you to learn that there's an entire nation west of Orange County, NY?
Next, I NEVER SAID Manny was less American than anyone else. YOU read something in my words that was neither implied nor explicated. All I said was that Holliday is a real American, and you flew off the handle bringing Manny into it.
Your last paragraph certainly makes a lot of highly prejudicial statements. You implicitly accuse me of being racist, using absolutely nothing as evidence, and then you paint midwesterners with a very broad brush as being "used to everyone being White Christians." Somehow you don't see anything hypocritical with your statements? Firstly, I was born a Catholic in DC, and lived for five years dirt poor outside Boston before moving to Arizona. I've never been a midwesterner in my life. Don't make assumptions.
Finally, since Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh is himself Jewish, I suggest you ask him whether Youkilis would fit in. And ask Kaz Matsui, Ubaldo Jimenez, or LaTroy Hawkins whether non-whites fit in.
Next time, think a little before you type, please, and be sure you know what you're talking about.

First time posting here (WARNING: Sox fan)
What I take issue is with someone calling East Coast people un-American. I think that's asinine and prejudiced and I don't see any basis for it whatsoever. If anything, whoever said that is being the elitist pr*ck that they think all of the East Coasters are.
Back to baseball. I don't think it was reasonable to expect to win Game 1, between the layoff, the home field advantage at Fenway, and, oh yeah, the best pitcher in recent postseason history. Everyone can call Beckett smug and cocky and all that but the guy is getting results at a historic level. 35 K's to 2 walks!?
Also, for all the talk about the bloated payroll, I can't defend "my" team to a full extent, but consider this:
Pedroia, Youkilis, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Lester and Ellsbury were drafted by the team.
Okajima (last night's hero) was a free agent that signed for $1.25M/year
Beckett, Lowell, Crisp and Schilling came to Boston via trades of top prospects
Varitek was picked up for Heathcliff Freaking Slocumb
Ortiz was a NON-TENDERED FREE AGENT
Yes, Schilling signed a lucrative extension, Ramirez broke the bank, Dice-K's entire ordeal was ludicrous and Drew/Lugo, I have no defense for. But for everyone to just throw a blanket statement and say "The Red Sox win because of their payroll" is ridiculous. It has SIGNIFICANT advantages, don't get me wrong (Clement and Renteria come to mind). But from what I've seen on this board, you guys are hardcore Rox fans who have somewhat of a rational perspective, so I'd hope you see things my way.
I hope I didn't piss anyone off - I just want to engage in a reasonable discussion.
by Reasonable Sox Fan on Oct 26, 2007 7:49 AM MDT reply actions
Points well taken
There is an general sense of annoyance in smaller western markets created by the east-coast media bias, which isn't new and hopefully isn't being disputed. And the lack of familiarity overall with the Rockies by the mainstream media is understandable.
However, to have Ken Rosenthal announce in front of the entire nation that the Red Sox offense is much better than that of the Cubs and Diamondbacks, who the Rockies faced in the NL playoffs, is just disturbing. (They faced the Phillies, not the Cubs, Mr. I write about and follow baseball for a living). And then to have the ESPN radio crew announce that the Diamondbacks could have very easily stolen away game 2 with a few key hits is over the top.
So hopefully you can understand some of the angst here.
With respect to the Red Sox, this baseball and Rockies fan has been thoroughly impressed. Beckett is a very good pitcher, but the way he steps up in the playoffs is unreal. Schilling was just average, the Rockies should have taken advantage of his lack of command in certain spots, but give him credit for gritting through it. The decision to yank Schilling in the 5th for Okajima was genius, even if it was the obvious move. It would have been very easy for Francona to outsmart himself there.
No one can dispute the quality of your home grown talent, although I think pitchers are going to start finding holes in Pedroia's swing next year. And I have no problem with Beckett being cocky (although I haven't really seen much of this from him), he has certainly backed it up with his performance.
However, the advantage of a massive payroll is that you can 1) pay tons of $$$ for mediocre talent and still survive (Lugo, Clement), and 2) afford to make dramatic mistakes (Daisuke, . Small market teams don't have those luxuries, just look at exhibit A: the Rockies of the last 10 years.
Certainly
However, another aspect that hasn't been addressed is that when teams like yours do grow their own talent, and said talent goes on to superstardom, your team can afford to KEEP those superstars. Teams like the Indians, Rockies, and Dbacks have to keep counting on the farm system to produce young, cheap players, after the previous crop gets bought up by the Yankees and Red Sox. When Pedroia's eligible for arbitration, you can afford to keep him.
By the way, on the Schilling trade? Thanks a lot for Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, Jorge de la Rosa and Michael Goss. Getting a setup man and 3 nobodies sure paid off well. (Well, actually, Lyon DID pan out better than expected this year)

Roberbola, thank you
One thing I'll say is that I am a HUGE Pedroia backer, to the point where I've gotten in screaming sessions with friends that were down on him after his horrid April. I think he's here to stay, and could make a few All-Star games as a result of this postseason exposure and the fact that he plays for a big market team.
Also, please don't call Dice-K a mistake. Josh Beckett had basically the same type of season last year and look what he's done. The guy's 26 years old and won 15 games in his rookie season in the American League. He will get better. Yes, he's been medicore to bad this postseason, but I expect him to be a star after this.
But your overall point was echoed by my original post - "we" can afford to be wrong. It's a luxury to have, though I think it's admirable that the current ownership regime is committed to putting the money back into the on-field product. Say what you want, but any team in SPORTS wants that out of an owner (not saying the Rockies don't - I'd plead ignorance on anything about the owner besides his name).
And LancePainter, since when did 21 players make up an entire 25-man roster? The guys with the 18th, 21st, 22nd and 25th highest salaries on the Red Sox have been the star performers of Games 1 and 2 so far, by the way.
Again, thank you for taking time for the post. And for the love of God, please allow Playboys and Maxims in the Rockies' clubhouse.

The Mets were the NL team to beat but decided to collapse the last two weeks hence the country gets a low budget no name team in the WS who is out sepnt nearly 3-1.

Dice-K wasn't a mistake.

Clement and Daisuke should be
Anyway, just a few nits to pick.
Pedroia could make the all-star team next year and I still wouldn't change my prognosis. Of course, we've all learned by now that whether or not a player makes the all star team is highly correlated with many factors, and performance is not always given its due weighting.
Saying Daisuke won 15 games as valid indicator of his future performance is iffy. Look at that lineup behind him, even I could probably win a game or two for the Sox.
I'd REALLY like to see the Rockies offense show up this weekend so we can see the best these teams have to offer battle it out.
Dice-K/Pedroia
I watched every pitch of Dice-K's rookie year. The guy has times where he's unhittable and times where he looks fragile. If you watched Beckett last year, you'd see his struggles. Dice-K will be a better pitcher next year - mark my words.
And I don't know what you're talking about in regards to the All-Star games - Scott Cooper made two of them! :-)
Also, whoever mentioned that the Sox can sign their home grown talent after it's cultivated made an excellent point - I have nothing to add but I just wanted to point that out.
Best of luck for the weekend - hopefully we're in for some good baseball. Raucous visiting crowds make me nervous as a fan, so I have a feeling I'll be on edge Saturday and Sunday. Prepare for sloooooooow games - Lester and Dice-K are huge nitpickers who don't really ever challenge hitters and try to paint the corners (Dice-K) or are still learning how to pitch and have spurts of wildness and lack of control (Lester).

We'll agree to disagree on Pedroia
Sorry bout that
By the way, "your" future is pretty damn bright. Jimenez made a few of the Sox hitters look like Little Leaguers yesterday. Francis is already established and then the lineup is full of mashers. Now if you guys could only get Rolando Arrojo back...
