Go Rockies....
Both sides of their game have awakened. They're definitely better than they've shown so far, time for 'em to step it up and show the world.
The Yankees no longer play in New York. They've moved into Fenway.

It could happen...
It's time to invoke:

The power of the beard.

The magic of number 64.

Coolbaugh's sons throwing out the first pitch.

and every other amazing thing that has happened to create the most memorable October in Colorado history.

LET'S-GO-ROCK--IES--!!

Game 3 first pitch?
Hey, who threw out the first pitch last night? Does anyone know? And what about tonight?

GO ROCKIES!

I believe...
it was a Colorado soldier who was injured in Iraq.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 28, 2007 6:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes...
Two Purple Hearts from Iraq, one in a wheelchair, it was a very touching moment.

Tonight it's Mike Coolbaugh's sons, I heard.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 6:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Of course,
you can't be critical of that.  Give those kids all the love they can handle, I say.

But, if it goes to game 5, it really would be a kick to see Walker, Dante, Gallaraga and Vinny out there.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 28, 2007 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Vinny actually brought the ball to the mound
last night for the first pitch with a lady that was being recognized for some community work. The stadium played his batting music and he got a huge cheer.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 6:14 PM MDT up reply actions

Good choices
Thanks for the answer. It sounds like it was a nice moment, should be tonight to. It's a shame they never show the first pitch on tv.

by holly96 on Oct 28, 2007 6:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Why show the first pitch when FOX can
put three or four commercials in that time?

by tailgateparty on Oct 28, 2007 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions

that's interesting to me
They showed the first pitch in the two games in Boston, Yaz did one and Evans the other, so I don't know why they wouldn't show it for the Rockies.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 6:17 PM MDT up reply actions

Yaz and Evans
did the lineups, but I don't recall them ever showing the first pitch.

by holly96 on Oct 28, 2007 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions

oh that's right,
But I distinctly remember one of them (Yaz) also did the first pitch, but I can't remember if Evans did. He couldn't get it to home and I remember thinking how bad that has to be for his pride as a former player.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 6:21 PM MDT up reply actions

It could have been
Game 1, as I missed part of the Fox pregame. But I know they didn't show it for Game 2 or 3.

Nice story
Here's a nice story on tonight's starters:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=3083332&sportCa t=mlb

Really puts it in perspective.

But that doesn't mean I don't want a win! Come on, Rockies, let's put it all together and pull one out!

by holly96 on Oct 28, 2007 5:57 PM MDT reply actions

Whatever happens
I'm proud to be a Rockies fan. I'm proud of this team's accomplishments, their character, their humility. Losing the Series can't change that.

That said, come on Rox! Let's get this one tonight!!

That's going to make me very happy.

I just wish we could have done it when I was there.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 6:04 PM MDT reply actions

Yay, optimism!
I'm a tad nervous about Cook, only because it's been so long, but I know he has the stuff. And while I don't really know anything about Lester, he doesn't scare me at all. I think the bats got a little confidence last night, and hopefully that continues tonight.

by holly96 on Oct 28, 2007 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

I feel good too.
although I'm thinking they may have to come from behind to do it.  Probably too much to ask from Cook to throw zeros up there exclusively, and Rox may take a time or two through the lineup to figure Lester out.

But they'll get the job done tonight, I do believe.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Oct 28, 2007 6:13 PM MDT up reply actions

At any rate
I'm glad to see Cook back out there.

If there's such a thing pitching, Cook is pretty much a known commodity.  Not by ERA standards or anything, but you do know he'll pound the sinker, walk and K few, and leave the brunt of the work to the defense.

Here's to those grounders finding Rockies' gloves tonight and not open spaces!

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 6:08 PM MDT reply actions

I'm curious how both these pitchers perform tonight. It's a very interesting story.

Urgh. I just need to vent somewhere about Hurdle constantly playing the infield in on man on third situations. It backfired last night in the third inning, it backfired just now. Stop it Clint. You're overmanaging us out of the series.

I have to say,
just from watching the game on TV, I was impressed. During the "Tu-lo!" chants, it sounded like the entire stadium was shaking.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 28, 2007 6:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Are those fabricated Tu-lo chants?
Meaning, are those baited by the video board or are the resulting from the fans.

Either way, I think those, and the mass of signs from the late run on, show that Tulo is already the face of the franchise.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 6:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Ya got me.
I was actually wondering the same thing; whether it was something that started spontaneously at some point during the season and grew, or whether they were being prompted by the JumboTron.

Either way, it seemed pretty loud.

At the game...
I attended, there was organ music that matched up with the Tulo chant, but no scoreboard prompting. The Holliday MVP chants were all spontaneous by the crowd.

the rhythmic clapping
is generated by the stadium mikes, but nothing on the screen tells the fans to shout "Tulo" at the end. It's patially organic in that regard, but on the shuttle bus from the parking lot to the stadium we were doing it on board. He's definitely taking over as FOF, and it's a fantastic thing.

by Russ Oates on Oct 28, 2007 6:36 PM MDT reply actions

One strategy I could live without
is the early inning infield in calls.  Instead of one run, two outs, nobody on.  It's one out runner on.

The DP made it all for naught, but it's better to just surrender the one run to avoid the potential big inning.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 6:37 PM MDT reply actions

I said the same thing above.
Some of Hurdle's questionable moves that seemed to work out in the NL series have been really biting him now, and I think that might be one of the biggest ones. Maybe it's Jamie Quirk's call on that, but the Rockies need to show more confidence in their offense (and then back it up) by playing for the out rather than the run early.

Atkins has actually looked solid defensively
this post-season.  Though last night I thought his range and athleticism really hurt us on a few balls that way, for the most part he's been very good going to the bag.  I have a feeling those are still fairly routine, but my bar for him defensively is pretty low.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 6:49 PM MDT reply actions

From what I've seen..
Atkins goes to his right pretty well, however his range to his left is horrible and he still needs to work on charging the bunted ball.
There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on Oct 28, 2007 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Statistically
he's going backwards defensively, and that shouldn't be too surprising.  I think he may have two years left in him at third before he really becomes a liability.  It's why I'm not too excited to try and extend him this off-season.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 6:55 PM MDT up reply actions

He dove and missed a line drive
either last night or the 2nd game in Boston, that scored some runs. Not necessarily a move that earns you an error, but wouldn't exactly be a spectacular play either.

One of the ones I'm thinking of
is that first inning infield hit to Tulo.  That was a slow roller slightly to the right of Tulo that you'd see several third basemen cut off.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Looking at the pitching numbers on Gameday
Cook's sinker is a tick or two slower with 2-3 inches less break than it was reading earlier this year.  That isn't necessarilly surprising, nor overly concerning, just something to think about going forward.

Terrible AB.  Seriously, if he's in such a bad place offensively that he can't even push a ground ball to the right side, they should have sent him up there to bunt.

exactly
The much anticipated Manny defensive miscue took until game 4 to appear. I did say he was a great defensive player, and if you continued reading what I said, I mentioned it was because he knew better than any left fielder in baseball today how to play left field in Fenway.

Notice his defensive miscue wasn't in Fenway. Also notice that if he was as terrible as advertised, his defensive miscue would have come up prior to game 4. Also note I said that Ortiz, although he is much maligned in the field, is really not that bad except for his lack of range.

As you may or may not have noticed, there are many things that are considered common knowledge about the skill sets of major league players that are not necessarily 100% accurate. It is the case with Rox players as with Sox players. Unfortunately, these common knowledge stereotypes get perpetuated by the poor media coverage. That is why scouting reports from the fans of the respective teams can be useful, and learning about your players was the whole reason I came here in the first place.

As an outfielder,
you're pretty much expected not to make miscues like that. That's why you're playing the outfield. (Well, that and range/speed)

Manny can play perfectly at Fenway; he's got the monster to help him out. But the Red Sox still play 1/2 of their games in other stadiums. There's a good reason Francona switched Manny with Jacoby Ellsbury last night, because there's no way Manny catches that ball from Jamey Carroll.

Doubt it
I would think Selig and Co. would want to take every opportunity to grandstand any findings.

As for the other part I wasn't considering until now, how might the Mitchell report shape the off-season?

Let's say hypothetically that Torii Hunter gets pinned in the report.  Will that cause potential PR nightmares for interested teams?  Maybe Hunter was too big of a name, but a lesser free agent could be crushed by the Mitchell Report.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Rumors..
All I've heard is rumors that it will be released after the World Series and has a lot of popular names on it.

But then, during the season all that was ever mentioned about the report was how no one was talking to George Mitchell. So who knows what's true and what was prescribed by a respected doctor of dentistry.

He's nothing now... but with the Dodgers, and before PED bans and testing, he was money.

Besides, for all we know, without the HGH, Byrd would have sucked even more. Might not have been in the majors without it.

Nice job by Cookie!
A gritty 5 innings by Aaron.  Stayed around the strike zone, got his sinker working, and let the defense vacuum up the grounders.  Makes me wonder, though.  He seemed to be shaking off Torrealba quite a bit.  How much of the Boston hit parade in games 1-3 can be attributed to Yorvit's game calling?

I've noticed that Yorvit
has been looking to the bench quite a bit between pitches this series.  Is he calling his own games anymore?

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 8:09 PM MDT up reply actions

So here's my point
Game 2, U-ball on the mound.  His control is suspect, especially his breaking stuff.  So what does Yorvit do?  He keeps calling for the slider, even though U-ball can't locate it consistently.  Almost like he's saying to himself, "I know my guy has a wicked slider, so I'm gonna keep calling for it" (never mind it ain't working).  Young staff, World Series, they're not likely to shake him off much.  Until, that is, Aaron Cooke.

Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there.  Just something to keep me occupied while the hundredth commercial drones on.

Jimenez was solid and wild at the same time just like normal, and really Josh Fogg was just Josh Fogg. I don't think Torrealba had as much to do with it as the circumstance.

Plus, you guys have some pretty decent hitters if you haven't noticed. I don't get why we're allowing so much to Julio Lugo, though. That's still a mystery to me.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 8:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Lugo
Lugo really had a strange year this year. If you look at his stats you won't be surprised by much, except for one really odd thing: his RBIs.

He far surprised his career best year in RBIs this year. He hit more RBIs than JD Drew on the season, and they both had similar number of at bats. I haven't really looked up his batting average with runners in scoring position, but I'm guessing that Lugo was appreciably better with men on base.

I know this will upset many fans here after his series of implosions this year, but if we can find him a right handed partner for the eighth (before Weathers gets here), we'll be more euipped to hide his faults and yank him when things hint at heading south.  He's been a pretty darn good set up man down the stretch, and he can still be good, but 6-7 million good?  That's a tough arb figure for our budget.

Joe
is entitled to his opinion. However, there is very little argument against Manny being the best right handed hitter in baseball over the past ten seasons in total.

Now, that being said, Manny will not win any gold gloves despite his Fenway fielding prowess, he will not steal any bases unless it is by accident, and he won't ever lay down a perfect bunt unless it is luck.

What he will do most years is hit 30-35 home runs and 100-120 RBIs with a batting average around .300 from the right side of the plate. That's pretty darn hard to come by, and will get him in the HOF if he keeps performing.

Scott Boras
has no class. Intentionally making that announcement during the WS game is a piss poor way to get the entire nation discussing ARod. Now that has happened, my hope is to see ARod get no $30 mill per year contract offer from anybody and to see him go back to the Yankees begging for a job.

Just so you all know, if ARod opts out of his contract, then the Yankees lose $7 million per year from Texas as part of the previous ARod move. As a result, the Yankees have publicly announced that if ARod opts out they will offer him no pay increase.

by Charlie77 on Oct 28, 2007 8:37 PM MDT reply actions

bye bye Sox
I wish CoCo a pleasant goodbye if that is the case. He is still under contract, but I believe we have a pretty darn good CF on the roster in Jacoby Ellsbury. I doubt CoCo will even start next year if he stays with the team, despite his gold glove fielding.

As for Timlin, he's 41 years old and missed much of the season due to injury and looked horrible when he first came back. I'm not so sure he has much left in the tank, so I wouldn't be sorry to see him go either.

Schilling is worth bringing back, but if he leaves the Sox rotation will still be in good shape barring injury (in case you haven't noticed, the Sox have decent pitching). At 40 Schilling has lost his 95 mph fastball and needs to rely on location. He also missed much of the season due to a shoulder injury. I don't know as he will give that much to the team next year, but his veteran leadership and postseason experience are good to have to go along with enough skill to still get the job done in the big games.

Lowell needs to be re-signed. Period. I don't want ARod, and I don't see any other free agent 3B out there any better than Lowell. Plus, Lowell is one of the leaders in the clubhouse and is beloved by the hispanic members of the team.

Look folks, the Rockie's are a good team. No bad teams get to the World Series. They will be mentioned as one of the contenders in the NL next season. However, they won't be handed a thing next year. Don't assume they will be a consensus pick to win the NL just because they made it this year. They will be picked by some and not by others.

However, without some off season moves I don't believe they can be a favorite to win the World Series next year based solely on their performance this series.

Their poor performance this series was due to quite a few factors in my opinion.

First, the layoff hurt them in game one, but I don't see how they could not have gotten the layoff issues straight in time for game two.

Second, they did come back down to Earth a bit. Every hitter goes through peaks and valleys throughout a season and a career. The Rockie's hitters were peaking at the same time for a few weeks, then for the playoffs (not just the WS) they entered a valley. The problem is, the valley came to too many of them at once.

Third, there's a few guys on that team that aren't that good a hitter, despite their season numbers. You don't strike out eight times in four games (or whatever) against all variety of pitchers in just a valley. Professional hitters make contact more often than not. I mean, we're not talking about facing Josh Beckett every game here.

Fourth, pitchers need to have good location to get by. You've got too many pitchers that made too many mistakes. Game one and game three were pitching disasters for the Rockie's. There's a couple guys on that staff that may need a lesser role next year. On most NL teams there's a couple guys in the lineup that rarely get hits (not just the pitcher). On a couple of teams there aren't many guys that can hit at all (i.e. Nationals). Pitchers with poor location can do ok against those teams. The top hitting teams in the AL don't work that way (Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, and Yankees would qualify right now). Poor location pitchers get hammered by them on a routine basis.

Fluky or not, it doesn't take the WS title away from the Cardinals any more than it takes the pennant away from the Rockies.

This simply isn't true.
And you can't take the streak out and still maintain contextual balance for your evaluation of the season. You have to count it, and every other game, including this flop thus far in the World Series. It amounts to the Rockies being a good team, but likely not up to par with the top four or five of the AL.

So unless you're going back to 2006 or before, I don't think that "mostly losers" statement is true. What's more, neither the streak team, the one before or the one now are likely the true measure of what the team is, it's probably somewhere in between, but they were still likely the best team in the NL this year.

I have always respected your upbeat approach.  But prior to the streak we were in 4th and have finished in last or fourth every year for what like 10 years.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 28, 2007 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Fourth in a division with four
plus .500 teams doesn't say anything. We would have been first in the NL Central, but what is that saying? Places don't matter, and again, you just can't ignore the streak like it didn't exist and pretend that you're making a fair evaluation of the season for the Rockies. You've got to count it just as you would if it had happened in April or June.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

The in-season part
was less than 10% of the games played that year.

We had to be doing something positive with the other 90% of games.

Also, a good 20% chunk of those was the underperforming month 1/2 opening the Rockies limped out on, so if you remove the high point and low point, you get a pretty darn good year.

Why is it Rox fans seem compelled to cheer whenever the word "mountains" is sung during the God Bless America rendition?

I realize there aren't any other MLB teams within the Rocky Mountain range. However, in basketball for example there is the Utah Jazz as well as the Denver Nuggets. Wouldn't the Utah Jazz's fans feel somehow slighted by the Denver fans taking ownership of the word "mountains"?

In addition, there are several other mountain ranges within the continental USA, albeit none as large as the Rocky's. Isn't it possible that the song is referring to the western California mountain range for example?

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 28, 2007 8:55 PM MDT reply actions

Helton
Personally, I never liked the idea of trading for Todd Helton in the first place. I know Kevin Youkilis hasn't earned anywhere near the respect as a hitter and fielder that Helton has. However, he certainly has more upside than Helton and is pretty darn good to begin with at a much lower salary ($424,500 for the 2007 season).

Since Youk can play 3B the only reason to have gotten Helton would be if the Sox didn't intend to re-sign Lowell, which I also believe would be a poor decision.

So, as far as Todd Helton goes, good player but not a good fit on the Sox due to the existing lineup. So I'd rather have Delcarmen.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 9:07 PM MDT up reply actions

altitude
I seriously doubt the altitude had much to do with the bullpen breakdown in game four. First off, the same pitchers pitched in games two, three, and four for the Sox. It is more likely overwork as opposed to altitude. The secondary possibility is that the Rockie's hitters got to see the same pitchers in games two, three, and four (familiarity).

by DbacksSkins on Oct 28, 2007 9:08 PM MDT reply actions

Bobby Kielty
He was injured early in the season as a member of the Oakland A's. The Red Sox signed him almost immediately. He is making $2.1 million this year, prorated by the Sox. He was told he would need to rehab in AAA before being promoted to the majors. He recovered from his injury, did his rehab stint, and became a situational fielder/hitter for the Sox for the last month of the season. He has some good breakdowns against certain pitchers, and he would start over Drew in RF when opposing those pitchers. He was also used as a pinch hitter in several situations. As an example, he started one game early on in the ALCS because of his excellent history against the Cleveland pitcher.

The Sox did the same thing with Royce Clayton. They historically do this on a regular basis. Bring in veterans that are released for one reason or another just for their veteran experience on the bench. The Sox hate to use kids on the bench because they feel the young players are better served by playing every day in AAA. In most cases, the veterans are thrilled to be part of a winning team right at that point in time that they thought their baseball career might be done. Gabe Kapler was a good example of this practice quite a few years ago.

Acquiring Benoit was your idea. With Texas in rebuilding mode, Jon Daniels should be open to dealing both relievers.  They also have an opening at 1B.  The deal certainly makes a lot of sense for both teams.

Also, an Otsuka-for-Koshansky trade would be dependant on Otsuka passing a physical.

I think we're Okie fans
No, I don't think we're upset with Okie (well, I can't speak for kemosabe and galactic) after the year he gave us. Especially, considering that for the fans and the organization, his signing was largely an afterthought. He's been lights out all year. Granted he began to tire at the end of the season, and granted he has thrown 2 mistakes in this series, but he has also performed quite well in this series (Game 2 Pap-ajima show).

If I wasn't rocking my Ellsbury jersey, believe that I'd have Okajima strapped across my back.

Rooting for Red, but pleased with the Purple that surrounds me in Vail

by Jelly on Oct 28, 2007 9:59 PM MDT up reply actions

Okajima
Oki is awesome. He has never pitched 3 games in 4 days this season, nevermind going over two innings in one of them. His lapse can easily be explained by overuse. I was actually quite surprised that Francona didn't bring in Gagne instead. This was not a must win game for the Sox, and Gagne isn't as bad as Snyder (the other option). The real mistake here was having Gagne on the roster instead of Tavarez. Francona has confidence in Tavarez, and he can pitch up to five innings in a stint. Realistically, assuming he pitched well, Tavarez could have been brought in after Lester and finished the rest of the game. But the team promised Gagne a playoff roster spot when the brutally bad trade for him was made.

The whole reason for that stupid trade was because the Sox almost signed Gagne in the offseason, but they were concerned with his injury situation, so they wouldn't guarantee him a position as the closer (back when Papelbon wanted to move to the starting rotation). Texas guaranteed him a position as their closer so Gagne chose Texas. So when Gagne proved himself healthy and Texas started shopping Gagne around, Boston was willing to give up too much to get him.

In retrospect, I'd much rather have Kason Gabbard back. I don't care if the kid had no long term rotation spot, he's a darn good pitcher.

Got a good piece of it
which is more than I expected.

So... Torrealba, Smith, Matsui for the ninth, yet should Yorvit fail, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hurdle bat Taveras.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 9:49 PM MDT reply actions

It's not a significant piece
but I'd really like to see the Rockies active in trying to replace Carroll, despite the year remaining on his contract.  Macri would have been perfect, but...

We just can't risk having him fill any lengthy role in the lineup again.  Or have a bench where he could potentially be needed for a big AB, regardless of his shallow sac fly in the play-in game.

by David OhNo on Oct 28, 2007 9:53 PM MDT up reply actions

I wrote something similar the other day
Dump Carroll and his $2M contract, go with Nix (who's out of options) or Quintanilla.

I think Troy Renck mentioned the possibility of trading Carroll a few weeks ago in order to free up $ for re-signing Matsui.

by malakian on Oct 28, 2007 9:59 PM MDT up reply actions

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 9:51 PM MDT up reply actions

If he DOES get on,
you run Taveras for him. Taveras is worthless sitting on the bench in the bottom of the 9th with a 90 year old catcher on the basepaths.

by Rox Girl on Oct 28, 2007 9:49 PM MDT reply actions

So, who's the pinch hitter?
I'm not sure if a young guy like Seth Smith is the right way to go against someone of Papelbon's caliber, but what are the options?

For me
the winter meetings can't come soon enough.  I'm a sucker for the hot-stove season and the various efforts and methods of team building.  Luckily, I think we enter this year with even more trade ammo and a solid base to entice potential free agents should we so desire to take that route.

Here's to nabbing that "big ticket" starter!

The hot stove season is almost as exciting as the regular season for me.  The trades, the signings, the speculation.... it's great.

Some helpful advice
if you don't have XM yet, consider it.  Wall to wall coverage of the off-season on MLB Radio, and though they favor the big names, they give more time to the "lessers" than most mainstream media outlets.  Plus, lots of Ken Rosenthal, Jon Heyman, Verducci, beat writers... it's great.

Thanks, Red Sox fans

promise
I made a promise before. I promised that if the Rockie's won the series I would congratulate you all, but that if the Sox won I would gloat.

Well, I'd like to say that I don't intend to gloat, and haven't at all in this thread. But I will mention a few things as the longest standing Sox fan on this blog.

A few things I was told when I arrived that weren't even close to true:

  1. The Rox are better at every position except 3B, C, and DH.
  2. Boston isn't equipped to play at Coors because of Manny in LF, Ortiz at 1B, Dice-K sucking rarified air.
  3. We will "kick in Beckett's teeth and shut Fenway the eff up."
  4. "Rox drop the first one, ESPN chowderheads salivate, they rip off the next four and clinch at home in Game 5."
  5. "You're an idiot" in response to my reasons why the Sox would beat the Rox. In most places, people that make INCORRECT predictions are considered idiots, not people that make correct ones.
  6. "The Boston hitters will have to adjust to not being up 2-0 or 3-1 every at bat."
  7. "I looked at what I saw on the field and think that Taveras is better than the Cereal/Ellsbury platoon."
  8. "They spray it all over the field. Have you ever seen the Rockies play??? Didn't think so."
  9. "I really like pointing out facts to guys like this and watching them get mad and frustrated. It's just hilarious to me." Free, your facts were impeccable.
  10. "To my fellow Rockies fans Sorry about the flame war up there. I tend to get my jollies by bringing facts to the table and shutting up arrogant east coast fans." - Free7694
  11. "you're willing to admit the bottom 3 of your division is inferior, but fail to see the possiblity of a direct correlation between playing 54 games (35 of which were wins) against those teams and having the best record in baseball?"
  12. June proves why we will beat the Sox.
  13. "Rockies in 5. The Sox will not win a game at Coors, so all we have to do is take 1 of 4 at Fenway"
And last but not least, I'd like to thank LarryB303 for this kind offer:

"So here's my proposal for you: come back and talk all the trash you want if and when Boston wins game one."

Unfortunately, the username you responded to was banned once I took you up on that offer, right after game 1.

Not gloating?
Wow, thanks Ickimore for telling us up front that you weren't intending to gloat.  It makes your vitriolic diatribe so much easier to take.

For kemosabe, galacticpilot and the many other classy Boston fans out there, I want to add my congrats on a great season and a dominant World Series.  Too bad the "real" (by that I mean post-All Star break) Rocks didn't show up, but I'm not even sure that would have been enough.  Despite getting to the Show this year, I think this group of players is still a year or two away from peaking.  When that happens, watch out world!  As another poster has said, "Objects in your mirror are larger than they appear!"

As for you, Ickimore, there are other boards and forums where you can trade barbs to your heart's content.  I suggest you find one, go there and stay there.

See ya next year
just a side note.  Our wonderful side for that inning was:
  1.  Our worst everyday hitter
  2.  Our .220 hitting utility infielder
  3.  Our lefty bat off the bench that spent all season at AAA.
Not a great way to go down.

It could be worse
The Rox could have finished in 4th place in the division and been hunting/fishing/whatever since September 30th.

This will sting for a bit, but as I've said: It's just baseball.

Rockie's
The Rockie's were also an excellent baseball team. They have a lot of up and coming young players and should be a force for years to come. It was an excellent series and it was enjoyable to watch two very close game, and one game in which it was much closer than the ending score. Game one, unfortunately, was not very close. But the other three could have gone either way with a little change in fortune.

Congratulations to the 2007 Boston Red Sox.
Won the WS in convincing fashion, solid in all facets of baseball.

Congratulations as well to the 2007 Colorado Rockies, of course, for winning the pennant and doing their best to represent all of us in the Senior Circuit. You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, and frankly, you guys battled back pretty well in every game after game 1.

This is the first time ever World Series games were played in Denver, and it won't be the last.

Here's to a good season series next year between the Dbacks and Rox, and success for both ballclubs.

What a fun season to watch and be a part of. Next year I hope will be just as fun, perhaps even more. I'm hope we'll be seeing you in another World Series, with less layoff time and more experience. That ring will belong to you.

Tip of the hat to the Red Sox, they played better baseball.

Now I don't know what to do for three and a half months. No baseball? You've got to be kidding me. Let's see what the front office decides to do to build a better team. I'm keeping an eagle eye on them...

And as for you, Rockies - this is a bit cheesy, but fitting for all the time I'll be spending waiting for the season to start -

To a degree
it's hard to fault casual fans if they feel underwhelmed by the Rockies.  we didn't get a nationally televised game until the play-in game, and most Sox fans had their own series to worry about rather than tune into the TBS games.  Hopefully, this will all change and we can gain national recognition in the same fashion as the '07 Detroit Tigers did for their '06 run.

Regardless, we were handled by a superior team, and congrats to you, your team, and your fans on winning the greatest championship in sports.

At the beginning of the '06 season
I said that we would be a couple games over .500 this season, which, before our surge at the end, we were going to be. I had next year pegged as the year for us to do something special. What I'm saying is, in my eyes at least, Rocktober 2007 was a bonus and a great prelude to Rocktober 2008. I accepted the reality of a sweep on Thursday night, so this isn't all that disappointing for me. We will be back in '08, better and more experienced. So, contrary to Dane Cook, there is MORE THAN ONE Rocktober!

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox
on a spectacular 2007 season.  A great series, and a great run on your part.

And more congratulations to the Rockies.  This is a team that has been building for years, and will be a contender for the forseeable future.  We have an interesting offseason ahead of us, but we will make the most of it, I guarantee it.

I'm sad that we lost the World Series.  But we won the NL Pennant this year, and we have solidified our place in the world of baseball.  Tonight I'm going to hang my Rockies pennant, and tomorrow will produly wear my hat and NL Champs shirt.  As Rockies fans, we have NOTHING to be ashamed of.  It's the end of this year, and to be sorrowful is of course an appropriate reaction.  But when all is said and done, we should hold our heads high.  And start counting the days to Spring Training 08.

Oh, and thanks to the D-Backs fans for sticking with us through this, you're always welcome back.  If we can survive a pennant race with you and still be cool, you're always welcome back.

Here's to a fantastic 2007 season, and looking forward to an exciting 2008.

Cubs
The Cubs make the most impeccably bad personnel decisions of any team on the planet. They can actually afford a high payroll, yet they sign players that really don't fit with their team on a regular basis.

I am a Cubs fan having lived five years just outside of Chicago, and it is amazing every year what they do. They sign players that make you scratch your head, they trade away promising minor leaguers for questionable major leaguers, and they have enough payroll to really be competitive. It is amazing.

It's not like this after the NBA Finals
or the Super Bowl.

The late commissioner's quote seems apropos at this point: It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. -A. Congrats Rocks!
If in spring training someone would've told me the Rockies would lose in the World Series I would have been thrilled.  If in May when this team was 18-27 and someone told they would get this far, I wouldn't have believed them.

Considering all that this team (fans included) have been through, I am just so happy right now.  We had the terrible start; the implosion tour through Toronto, Chicago, and Houston; the constant injuries to our pitching staff; the Coolbaugh story (the bad side), and yet, through all of that, has come the sweep of the Yankees; the 21 of 22; the Gwynn Jr. triple; the chin; the Coolbaugh story (the good side); Ubaldo and Franky and Manny; a MVP; a ROY; and finally, and most importantly... a NL Pennant.

This has been a great year, let's not let the dissapointment of losing the WS to the best team in baseball overshadow that!

Go Rockies!

It's ROCKtober, baby!
