Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Some Thoughts

Well,  what a ride it has been...

getting swept hurts, however, looking back in April, no one expected us to be here, or even in the playoffs.   Most of the National News had us pegged for a 4th place finish, so keeping that in perspective, this season has been magical.  One of the things I have missed as a fan was being able to go to a game, and have the stadium packed to the brim, like it was in the early days.  I wasn't able to go to any playoff games (had tickets but the sweeps happened..) but it was amazing to hear the old Go Rockies chant over the TV.  Coors is a magical place when is packed, and this year we got the magic back.

I'm wondering what this team would've done if we hadn't had the 8 day layoff.  In a game thats about timing,  8 days I think killed us.  I don't want it to be an excuse, but I do want to say that the Rockies didn't show up until it was too late, and I think the 8 games had something do with that, especially with the swings of Hawpe, Tulo and Atkins.  Thats not to take anything away from the Red Sox, they are the better team, and they played the better baseball.

As for this offseason, this is the most important offseason in the history of the franchise.  Monforts say they are going to get the payroll over 70 million, so what should they be looking at?

First I want Holliday signed long term.  I don't care what it takes, he is the face of the franchise, and you cannot let him walk.  Depending on how Stewart's transition to 2b goes,  I think you resign Atkins as well.  If Stewart proves he can't handle 2b, then you need to sign Matsui also.  There is no one ready on the farm to take over, and their is no better Free Agent option either.  At catcher, you have to give Ianetta a shot, and I don't think Yorvit will be worth the money he commands.  Bring in a backup and let it be know to Hurlde that Ianetta is the starter from  day one.  CF came up lame this post season.  Taveras isn't the answer, and I would like to see Spilly and Smith get some playing time next year.

Fuentes... I think he has to go.  At this point he's nothing but a LOOGY, and he will be over priced at that.  He blew too many games in the offseason, and he couldn't hold it close when we needed him to.  He's not the same pitcher he was, and honestly he was nothing more then above average to begin with.

So with that 70 million, I think we need to spend on getting Holliday, Atkins and Cook signed long term, then we need to get some good RP.  I don't care if your paying 3-5 million for a middle reliever. Get Herges and Hawkins back, call up Morrilo, and get one or two more people for the back of pen.  I havn't looked at options yet, but this is a must.   I don't think you need to keep Fogg.  He's pitched above his head in the stretch, but he's basically close to replacement level.  Next years rotation needs to look like this:

  1. Francis
  2. Cook
  3. Jimenez
  4. FA
  5. Hirsh
Keep Morales on the farm to start off with, and lets get some guy on a 2 year deal.  Maybe Jennings could have a nice home coming, again I havn't looked at to many names, but that could be a starting point.

Lineup:

  1. Kaz
  2. Tulo
  3. Holliday
  4. Helton
  5. Atkins
  6. Hawpe
  7. Spilly/Smith
  8. Ianetta
or if Stewart is ready at 2b
  1. Spilly/Smith
  2. Tulo
  3. Holliday
  4. Helton
  5. Atkins
  6. Hawpe
  7. Stewart
  8. Ianetta.
Either one looks very good.

Today might sting a bit, but we will be back. We have a championship to defend, and I think our guys in purple should do well.

One a parting note.  The season before the Broncos won the Super Bowl, they lost in their first round of the playoffs.  That offseason they changed their uniforms, and Logo, and low and behold, they won back to back.  The key to winning next year is in the Uniforms they wear.  Its time to change, when we are on a national stage, we shouldn't be caught dead in the black embarrassment that they wear now.

I'm thinking something like a Forest green and Purple to match the seats at Coors would look really well.  Get it done Dan

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Regarding Taveras...
Let's remember that in the NLCS and World Series he was coming off an injury, and didn't look 100% to me. Plus, he's only 25, I think he can still be a very good CF next year and beyond.
Every day is a Holliday!

Not sure on Taveras
I mean I understand he was coming off injury, but he seems to be injury prone.  Besides I can't count the number of times he came up to bat this year with runners on base only to hit a weak ground ball to end the inning.  His only weapon is his speed, but when you can't hit the ball out of the infield, then you can't drive people in.  Smith and Spilly deserve a chance.

Not sold in Spilly in CF
First, he doesn't cover enough ground to play everyday in Coors' CF, and the way his production dropped as the season wore on has me worried.

Not sure if Smith can handle CF, or if he's even ready for the bigs quite yet.

I'm inclined to go with Willy for one more year and see what develops.

As for Morales, I say he gets a shot to win a spot in the rotation during the spring.  He gained unbelievable experience this fall and just might be ready to carry it through next year.  I love the idea of him and Ubaldo back to back in the rotation.

I would agree on Morales
but I don't think he should be handed it out of spring training.  Bring in a vet (thats better then Foog) and let them battle it out.

I don't want to get to unrealistic here, but Jones, or Hunter look really nice right about now.

However as for the best in house solution,  keep Taveres, but have him switch roles with Spilly give Spilly most the starts in like a 70/30 percent split.  Keep smith as a fifth OF

Hey now
I like the Rockies current unis.  We're the only baseball team to wear purple, and our purple uniforms look good.  The black vests are okay.  I'd be all for tweaks to the home whites and road greys, but those are baseball tradition so I'm guessing that won't happen.  Forest green would be cool if done well, but I like what we have.

However, what I think is a long time coming is a change to the cap logo.  I love the "R" with the mountain peak inside of it, and I think it would make an awesome cap logo.  Or, something I discussed with my friends up here, is to get rid of the letters all together and go with a logo a la the Astros or Indians.  I know the baseball purists will stone me for it, but I'm thinking something that looks like:

(of course, excusing the fact that I did it in MS Paint).

I think that small changes like that would look really nifty.  Regardless, any change to the uniform will only be good for the franchise in the long run.  New merchandise = $ for the Monforts to spend on signing Holliday long-term.

I like the purple
also, but the players don't seem to.  On the road greys, I would get rid of the pin stripes, change the font, and change the lettering to a green with Purple boarder, and you have a winner.  On the Home Whites, they seem to be fine.  I would only make the same changes to the font as I would on the road greys.

As for a cap logo, I agree that the R with the mountains in it is a winner.  They could also do something like using their Logo with the mountains and the Colorado Rockies wording around it, and just take out the Colorado Rockies wording around it, something like you have, only smaller

Yeah
The picture was made in about 5 minutes :) .  Something more low-key would be cool too, like a very simple outline-ish of mountains in white or silver.

One thing I am certain of, however.  This looks too cool to pass up:

Hmm...
We've always had the serifed capital letters, but lately the marketing has been with the non-serifed bold font.  I'd have to play with it and see what looks best.  Once class is over, Photoshop can be fired up :) .

Spilly
As far as I'm concerned he should be fighting for a job in spring training.  He basically vanished during the last 6 weeks of the regular season as well as the playoffs.  I like the guy... but I don't think he's any more than a 4th outfielder.  Keep Willy out there next year; at least he provides plus defense at a position where we really need it due to Coors.
rockies in october.

Unis/lineup
First off I don't see a need for a major uniform change and purple and green would have to be the grossest colors possible. I've always been partial to the early 90's Don Baylor sunday all black uniforms. They should replace the back vests with those and they would be fine. 2nd of all I don't understand how you put Spilly/Sully ahead of Taveras. Taveras played great until he hurt himself. Sully's not bot better than Taveras and Spilly disapeared late (by the way he can't be in the leadoff spot.
