Purple Row Player Database?

An idea.....

I think it would be cool to have an extensive player database for the Rockies organization (linked to Purple Row for reference/research purposes).  Every player within the organization would have an individual profile with statistics, pictures, personal information, future outlooks and brief scouting reports.

It would be similar to the databases they have at websites like brewerfan.net, soxprospects.com, yankeesprospects.com, orioleshangout.com and raysbaseball.com.

In addition, I think it should be in a wikipedia-like format, where fans could add pictures and notes to the profiles.

I'm thinking that due to bandwidth constraints and other issues, the database would be off-site, but linked to Purple Row.

Anyone else besides me support this project or think this is a good idea?  (I'm looking for feedback)

I think it would be an excellent resource for Rockies fans....

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Player Data Base
Great Idea!  Sounds like a lot of work but the information should be available at each minor league website.

In '93 and '94
I kept an excel spreadsheet of every player that appeared in a Rockies uniform, and I updated the stats for those players everyday from the boxscore.  That way, I could sort columns and see who the Rockies career leader in doubles was, or the pitcher with the most wild pitches, etc.  I didn't have anything else to do in high school, so I did that.  It was an immense amount of work, but it was fun.  After '94 though, I went to college and found out I could get the same info from the media guide.  Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to find the file again as that was two or three computers ago, but with help, such a project might again be valuable for those doing Rockies research.  I mean where else could you find out that Mac Suzuki has an infinite ERA in a Rockies uniform? (Sarcasm, I'm sure it's out there somewhere).

Not what I had in mind.
The database would consist of players currently in the organization, not guys from the past like Mac Suzuki.

Basically, individual profiles of the 200+ players currently in the organization.

What each profile would consist of:
-Pictures of the player
-Personal info (height, weight, college, etc.)
-Current status (injury-wise/contract-wise)
-Career statistics or a link to career statistics
-Link to current statistics (once the 2007 season begins)
-2007 outlook
-Career outlook
-Brief scouting report/bio
-Links to articles or other information regarding that player

Sort of similar to the college profiles Russ is doing and the few top 30 purps profiles Rox Girl has done, except not as extensive.  Just a simple reference for Rockies fans...

Oh, I knew what you had in mind
I was merely saying that I did something (somewhat) similiar way back in the day and I had fun doing it.  I didn't mean to piggy back off of your idea, but it might be interesting for someone out there to keep a running tally of those who have played for the Rockies.

Bandwidth not as much an issue as you think...
I mean, if you wanted to do it offsite, that's fine with me, but if you did want to have it here, I would think we'd be able to squeeze it in. Jeff Sackmann's Minor League Splits site was a project SBN couldn't handle, but that's got a page for every minor leaguer in every system. If you compare the bandwidth Purple Row is using to sites like Lookout Landing and Lone Star Ball, you'll see we've been quite economical when it comes to the pages we've generated. Making it wiki-like would present a greater challenge here, since only Russ and I have edit capabilities right now, and though I could probably get that privilege extended to a couple more trusted users, it would still be a situation of edits having to go through whoever has that ability.

Time is probably the biggest factor. Assuming all of us have lives outside of Rockies baseball, assembling all of the relevant data could be a daunting task, even if there are several people involved. I think it's a fantastic idea, however, and we should definitely look into doing it.

Player profiles
It would be better and more accessible if the player profiles were here, as opposed to something offsite.  If bandwidth isn't a big issue, then I see no reason why it shouldn't be here.  Has any SBNation site ever tried something like this?

The more I think about it the more I'm reconsidering the wiki-format idea.  The profiles only need one or two pictures (besides, no one around here seems to be interested in player photography) and if 3-5 people had editing abilities I`m sure the profiles could be kept up-to-date.

As for the other issue, time, I'd be willing to do most of the work.  I've had some free-time on my hands lately.

Also, keep in mind that some of the information that would be featured on the profiles is already written and available.  You could just copy and paste some of the old scouting reports you and OhNo have written in the past.

I may (stress may) be interested in player photos
I have a pretty good camera, and would like to learn how to use it.  I can think of no better medium than action pics of the Rockies.  It will depend on how many Rockies games I can get to with my work load, and whether or not my wife lets me drive up to Casper or down to the Springs on the weekends.  That one could be a nice debate.  I am willing to do what I can though.

Example
Here's an example of what I was thinking of (in terms of format and content).

That looks great
Let me write Blez at AN about getting you on board, and probably OhNo as well, if possible and if he's agreeable to it.

by Rox Girl on Feb 20, 2007 2:23 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure
I can't guarantee much during the semester, but I'm willing to help with anything you need.

by David "ohno" on Feb 20, 2007 8:15 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

OK... cool
So I should start working on the profiles?

Have you gotten clearance from Blez yet?

Yep, you're all clear to post
David, on the other hand, will have to re-register unfortunately because the "" marks in his new screen name have made it impossible for us to change settings on his account. If you read this "OhNo," let me know when you've got a new account so I can have Blez upgrade you.

by Rox Girl on Feb 22, 2007 6:13 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I had russ change it
so, should I just have him take the "" out?  Or go through the registering process as a new user?

by David "ohno" on Feb 22, 2007 3:29 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

You definitely
need to re-register. I can't take the "" out because the database can't find the complete name anymore. You will need to use a different e-mail address to sign-up. Sorry for the inconvenience.

by Russ Oates on Feb 22, 2007 3:42 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Okay
here's the name without the "".

by David OhNo on Feb 22, 2007 4:15 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks, I'll e-mail Blez tonight
Hopefully, you'll be squared away by tomorrow.

by Rox Girl on Feb 22, 2007 4:45 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

No big deal
So is this to add to malakian's player pofile project?  If so, he can just e-mail me with what he'd like me to help with.

by David OhNo on Feb 22, 2007 4:51 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Only partially, I think.
I think Rox Girl also wants you to be an occasional writer (an "official" contributor).  A lot of the articles and evaluations you've written in the past are definitely worthy of being on the main page.

That looks great!
One more thing to make the Row better.

This
would be awesome, looks great.

Check it out....
The first profile is up:

Darren Clarke

I'm open to any suggestions or ideas to make them better before I start working on 100+ more of these.

Looks excellent!
I changed it to allow comments just in case somebody from the community has something to add. There's a week time limit now on adding commentary, though, as part of our spam protection, so we'll probably add to a main page post who's been recently profiled every couple of days with the links.

by Rox Girl on Feb 22, 2007 4:06 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Great idea!
I love the thought of a player database and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing these posted.

Also, malakian, if you happen to have any questions regarding players, feel free to contact me and I'll provide insight, seeing I have gotten the opportunity to see many of the players in person. So let me know if I can be of any help...

By the way malakian, I know I need to get away from the college life. Sometimes, its so tough living in the dorms with all the ladies around ;)...definitely though, I always check Purple Row, and I am going to attempt to post more often.
