Tuesday Morning Rockpile:
Matt Meyers did go to Rockies camp yesterday, and comes back with some interesting stuff on our Latin system, including a look at Hector Gomez.
Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta both had reason to celebrate a little bit on Monday, in a testament to their makeup as ballplayers, both went back to work instead. Fantastic.
For those that missed the list of the rest of the demotions yesterday, here's the official transactions page. As has been noted, nothing shocking here, the closest to the bigs this Spring was Jeff Salazar's brief flirtation with one of our backup outfielder roles.
Thomas Harding's notes column at the official site has an interesting quote from Clint Hurdle way at the bottom in regards to what he's looking for in Jeremy Affeldt's performance this Spring:
Update [2007-3-13 9:51:18 by Rox Girl]:
In addition to writing the article linked above, Tracy Ringolsby's been busy as he also did an audio interview with Baseball Prospectus in regards to the Rockies' chances this season. And another article for their "Hope and Faith" series on How the Colorado Rockies can win the World Series. It's free content, no subscription required for this one.

Guess for those that will be cut next?
As I'm thinking Spillbourghs will get the extra OF position after Baker and Finley, that means Gomez to AAA, and Mrbry cut. Quintinella and Barmes to AAA. As well as Covina, Gil.
Pitchers are a little harder to read. I'm thinkig Bull pen is looking like this:
I'm assuming: Lawerence to the DL
Bucholtz (If he's not a starter)
Affeldt
Corpas
Ramirez
Hawkins
Fuentes
OPEN: Veres, Herges are the top two, with Gallo, or Rivera as possibles cause they are lefties, and Maybe a long shot of Tom Martin. Graves is cut or sent to AAA
If Bucholtz is a starter then Fogg, Kim are gone and we have 2 open spots in the bullpen. If Uball is the #5 (as Rox Girl and I are both rooting for) then Bucholtz is in the Bullpen with only one spot.
wait a sec...
there's only 5 bench slots. carroll, torrealba, and baker are guarantees. well...now that i think about it, i guess baker's versatility makes him an infielder too, so with carroll and baker, all the infield positions are covered. although, instead of taking two reserve outfielders, since baker can cover right, i'd rather just choose one between spillbouroughs and finley, and keep mabry as strictly a pinch hitter. if you have enough versatility in your first four bench slots, and left handed, veteran pinch hitter with some pop is a HUGE luxury.
i say finley over spillbouroughs, to start, and then if finley is sucking it up, bring up spillbouroughs (assuming he has options left, i'm not sure).

Agee to an extent
Too Much Talent??
Springs
Definites:
3B - Ian Stewart
1B - Josh Koshansky
SS - "Likely" to be the loser between Barmes and Tulo
2B - Jayson Nix
Util: Omar Q - He'll start at SS if the loser of Barmes/Tulo doesn't make it to the Springs, or 2B if Nix isn't ready to start the season. Otherwise, he'll be the super-sub who will get regular playing time at all positions plus DH.
Outfield: (depends)
Barker, Spilborghs, Seth Smith, Salazar....with Barker, Smith, Salazar likely starting.
Spilborghs/Omar Q. battling for the starting DH job.
(My guess is Matt Miller, Gaetti, Colonel, Macri and Czarniecki start at AA)
Sully is probably the one destined to "have" to trade. You'd think the Rockies and Florida would be talking everyday right now.
cool
my question: why would florida, or any team, be the least bit interested in cory sullivan?
how does he have any value, whatsoever?
i'm not trying to be ultra-cynical, it's just an honest question that baffles me.
he's almost worthless. and his defense is overrated.

he's not that bad....
I watch different games
I know that I value Sullivan's defense more than most but in my opinion he is a very good defensive player in center.
He gets amazing jumps and reads on balls. He rarely makes a mistake and he makes difficult plays look easy because he is so fundamentally sound (and gets such great reads on balls).
He definitely has value as a defensive replacement in center (if nothing else) for a team with a weak fielding CFer.
I think sg8335 was saying his defense is solid
I think that Coors Field, and perhaps our pitching messes with the metrics a bit, particularly those at Baseball Prospectus, as I see the same things you two do. I think his range is decent, not spectacular, but he does get a good read off the bat and closes well. His arm's an asset, and his bat is inconsistent as heck, but not terrible. I think he's a fine backup cf for contending teams, and a fairly solid starting option for desperate clubs.
