Knuckleballer Simon Ferrer added to 40-man roster; Optioned to Tulsa

Brian Lawrence was also placed on the 15-day DL, as the Rockies finalized their opening day roster.

This is a very odd move by the Rockies.

I don't get it.  What's the point of adding Ferrer to the 40-man?

MALAK! I'M SURE IT'S ONE OF THOSE ROSTER.....
technical things....but come to think of it who would you rather throw a NON-HOMERUN....A knuckleballer or Martin/Kim etc.

Perhaps the assumption
is that a knuckleballer is a knuckleballer, and that little time in the minors is necessary for refinement.  If he proves his worth in Tulsa, he could reach Coors Field in short time.

After that...I've got nothing...

That still doesn't explain why he was added....
It's not like the Rockies needed to protect him from a second Rule 5 draft in May.  There is no reason to add a minor leaguer (unless a player has an escape-clause) at this point in the year.

As soon as someone finds an explanation for this, please post it.

Free Ryan Spilborghs!

AGREE!!!!!!!!! ON FREE RYAN SPILBORGHS..RE: FERRER
it is the start of the season and MAYBE the 40 man becomes the 39 man for the rest of the season if all slots are not filled on opening day and they feel Ferrer's successful numbers do not equate to someone picking him up if he is dropped in a few days because his sample size is so small as a pitcher (only 35 innings) and they would surely lose Stewart, Smith, Jiminez, Spilborghs etc......Only a semi-educated guess/analysis.

knuckleballer
I thought he was going as a starter to Asheville? What happened to change that?

by lahardball on Apr 1, 2007 2:55 PM MDT reply actions

Wishful thinking
Maybe they added Ferrer to fill up the 40-man roster so they can put Martin on the 60 day DL and we won't have to worry about him for a while. You have to have a full 40-man roster before you can put a player on the 60 day DL. That may just be wishful thinking on my part but I could handle Martin being on the 60 day DL. That's two full months that we don't have to worry about him pitching.

That could be the reason
That doesn't explain why Ferrer, however.

Got a little bit of an update.
I e-mailed Monique who did the Ferrer  diary a few months back knowing that she's been following his rise closely. Apparently he's had an awesome Spring, not giving up a run in quite some time:

Yeah I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I know his promotion was heavily dependent on his last start...
I know going into his start on Tuesday, he still hadn't allowed a run in a while, so I would assume that still is the case. He had a very good spring, so the promotion makes sense for him.

This is pretty exciting news, and the promotion to the forty-man roster seems to imply that the Rockies feel they could have use of him some time this season, even.

Knuckleballer
Why then did he fly out with the Asheville team? When will we see the actual rosters?

by lahardball on Apr 2, 2007 6:42 AM MDT reply actions

very strange...
I still don't think we've gotten to the bottom of this, obviously.

I wonder if it could be related to trying to put somebody on the 60 day DL after all. Maybe it was miscommunication as well. Apparently his Spring was impressive, though, which is definitely encouraging.

More from Monique
He's definitely on his way to Asheville as a starter, so the Tulsa part of the information sounds like a mistake. Also, she clarified that the move to the forty man was to allow other roster moves, I wonder who's a target for the 60 day DL list then.

And it looks like my e-mail just blew up...
I have no idea what just happened, but Hotmail is saying I sent like a gazillion copies of my thank you message to Monique. That, is embarrassingly disastrous.
