4/21 Roster Moves

Bobby Keppel and Ryan Speier have been called up from Colorado Springs.

Matt Herges was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Keppel.
He had thrown four innings over the last three days and the Rockies felt the need to bring up a fresh arm.

"In fairness to Matt maybe it was a little bit of him (being ineffective)," manager Clint Hurdle said. "But he's thrown a lot. He threw the last day he was in Colorado Springs, he threw an inning the first day he was (Thursday) and he threw yesterday. We need to fill some voids right now."
Most importantly, Ramon Ramirez was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained right elbow.
Ramirez, who's been effective as a seventh-inning reliever, injured his arm Tuesday night against the Giants. Ramirez was credited with a win in the Rockies' 5-3 victory. Ramirez's stint on the disabled list is retroactive to Wednesday, meaning he's eligible to return on May 3.

Subsequent Triple-A transactions
Bobby Keppel was originally scheduled to start for the Sky Sox tonight.  Alberto Arias will start in his place.

Jorge DePaula and Jentry Beckstead were added to the Sky Sox roster to replace Keppel and Speier.

Injuries starting to pileup
That's what, four in the past week or so?

I like the move of calling Speier up - I've always been a fan of his for some reason.

Can someone give a scouting report on Keppel? Pitches, speeds, etc?

Keppel
He's a sinker-slider pitcher with solid control.  He throws a low-90s fastball and has good movement on his pitches.

Moves
That's the first I've heard of that. When did that happen?

I remember that Keppel pitched well in spring training but I don't think he ever went in before the 8th inning so he never faced any of the major league hitters. He must have been called up to be the long reliever while Buchholz is in the rotation.

Brining Speier up is a good move. He's been doing well and could probably pitch better than half the bullpen anyway.

Herges is not really a surprise. After last night when he still struggled when we were already in the hole by a large margin, I had a feeling it would only be a matter of time.

This afternoon
I first saw this information in the pregame notes on press pass.

Clarification
The "when did that happen" question was in regards to Ramirez but I see that malakian answered that. Still, if Ramirez was hurt on Tuesday, how come we haven't heard anything about it until today, 4 days later?

What's also strange is that you think they would have put him on the DL a little earlier with Lopez going on the DL and Buchholz going to the rotation. Because of that, we were already short the long man and being short Rami would just have made things worse.

I don't question that Ramirez is hurt, just managements decision to wait so long to put him on the DL when they knew they were already short.

A sprained right elbow is scary. Hopefully, it's minor and Rami will be back soon. He was one of our best pitchers out of the bullpen and we need him.

Shaky bullpen with a lot of question marks...
What does the bullpen alignment look like now?

9th: Fuentes
8th: Corpas
7th: McClellan & Affeldt
6th: Hawkins & Speier
Long Relief: Keppel

Not good....  Hopefully Ramirez is only out for the minimum 12 days.

This blows
I know we had some good luck with injuries in 2006... but boy, are we getting crapped all over with bad luck on the injury front so far this year.

We've now lost our best starting pitcher (to this point), one of our best hitters (to this point), and our second best reliever (to this point).

Bobby Keppel is Matt Herges without the resume. But I'm glad to see Speier up - I think he can do some good things. Also, it's nice that we continue to pretend Tom Martin doesn't exist. That's a step in the right direction.

Now, where does everybody think Barmes will bat in the order tonight? Come on, you know Hurdle won't be able to resist getting him in there...
