Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Game #5: Rockies vs Padres; Fogg vs Wells

With Jake Peavy set to go tomorrow night, it would be nice to get the series win tonight against Wells. What we have going for us is Josh Fogg, who in 24 chances against guys named Giles, has allowed eleven hits (including two HR's to Brian) and two walks. What the Padres have going for them is David Wells who doesn't have the same sort of history against our batters to look up. Not that Wells doesn't have a history.

At any rate, the matchup right now isn't looking promising, but I think we could still come up with something unexpected. And not like getting a surprise package of dried squid chips instead of ice cream, unexpected, either. No this would be the good kind.

Go Rockies!

For a leadoff man
Willy T sure isn't great at getting on base. It's still early and all that, but I'm probably not the only one that thinks Spilborghs could be doing a better job in that slot. Still... at least Hirsh doing well last night helps.

I'm worried about Willie
I talked him up all off season.  But this first week he's looked over matched.  Not he's having a bad week  bad...more like he's not a major leaguer kinda bad.

I like Spilly too, and would rather him be on the team then either Mabry or Finley, and I think he could start...though I'd rather he not lead off.  Kaz could lead off better.

Now...I'm also worried about Tulowitzki as well

by Redhawk on Apr 7, 2007 7:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Tavares will be fine.
Here's the thing that we have to keep in mind.  He's been on base 3 times so far.  He's scored each time.  The hits will come, and when they do, you can almost see the tension build on the opposing pitcher.

I still say, that if we played in the AL and had Baker in the lineup more often then not, we'd have a top 5 lineup.  The way it stands now in the NL, we're probably top 3.

I'm kind of wondering....
why the Rockies didn't go with Cook.  With Thursday off, he had the requisite 4 days of rest.

I would use Kaz now
And save Hawpe for the 9th inning to pinch hit for Finley because there is the possibility that there could be runners on for Hawpe whereas now he would just be leading off.

But Hurdle would probably view that as a waste of the bench, especially when there's a distinct possibility that this game could go to extras.

I was thinking the same thing
If the game goes into extras, we have both of our long men available, so it's not like there's anything really to worry about in "burning" Fuentes.  Plus, did you notice that Bud Black used Hoffman in a non-save situation? That worked out pretty well for them.

Exactly
It's the total lack of imagination that makes us all think Hurdle sucks. Of course, this lack of imagination holds true for about 3/4ths of the league's managers... but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

by Silverblood on Apr 7, 2007 10:44 PM MDT up reply actions

My main point was...
...I hate San Diego.  There's no denying that.  But honestly, our offense has been barely getting by. Take away one monster inning and we've scored four runs or fewer in four straight games against Livan Hernandez, Doug Davis, Greg Maddux, and David Wells (all veteran guys, but by no means untouchable).  It's early in the season so I am in no way hitting the panic button, but Peavy has been tough on the Rockies in the past and we've hit a small cold streak offensively heading into this game.  The one thing we do have going for us though is Cook, who has been successful in Petco in his short career.

I understand
a lot of it is quite harmless and in the heat of the moment.

The stuff that's getting old is the one's acting worried about going forward with player A or player B, after just a mere handful of games.  I think it's worth noting that the same concerns haven't been shared by staffers rox girl, russ, malakian, and some of the long time "Rowers."  We all need to recognize the importance of sample sizes and the problems with overanalysis.

We're all fans, but Purple Row has built a reputation of being a well spoken, carefully thought out blog that has kept a standard of analysis on par with the best baseball journalists.  That doesn't mean that things aren't said out of emotion from the now, but it isn't a desired trademark.

I just find it more prudent to withhold widespread snap judgments.  It's still understandable to voice frustration in the game threads, but when it starts to carry outside, it shows a lack of perspective.  Sure Taveras is struggling at the moment, yes Tulo and Iannetta are having rough adjustments to full time roles, but fans need to keep in mind that only 3% of the season is in the books.  No projection system or scouting report would tell you Taveras would be a .100 hitter, or that Tulo and Iannetta would struggle to top Mario Mendoza, so why should wo wholly adopt these opinions after five games!

This site has always prided itself in having the right perspective.  Often, that perspective hasn't been the company line, but it doesn't mean we have to second guess everything.

In short, what I mean is we should be more concerned with the years of statistics on these players rather than the past five games.  Frustration in game threads is understandable, but it's carrying some of the unfounded concerns night in and night out that gets a bit irritating.

by David OhNo on Apr 7, 2007 11:18 PM MDT up reply actions

One of each I think
I also think Herrera and Fowler should share some of the blame tonight.  Right now they are both 0-fers on the night.  This organization is really sinking fast...

by Squeaky on Apr 7, 2007 11:02 PM MDT reply actions

Questionable management
How often does it actually turn out favorably to walk the 2 hole hitter to get to the #3 guy? Seriously.

The other issue I have with Hurdle's game management was letting pitchers keep going. He left Fogg in to face two batters. Then he decides to use Affeldt as the situational lefty for two batters. Then Ramirez faces one guy and his nights over. Corpas going in in the 8th was a good call but he hasn't pitched more than one innings all year. Yes, he was doing well but we still had 4 guys sitting in the bullpen, two of which have pitched multiple innings (and, no, I am not advocating putting Kim in in that situation. I was actually dreading that they would put him in. I was merely stating that there were other long relief options). I think Hurdle just pushed Corpas too far. He was far less effective in his second inning.

by lgh77 on Apr 7, 2007 11:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Pitcher Use
I guess I'll try to defend Hurdle's use of the bullpen last night.  I had complained earlier that he used too many relievers in too few innings in the first few games.  I think he let Fogg go as long as he did to try to save his bullpen.  I think he should have let Hirsh and Lopez go a bit longer too, since their pitch counts were relatively low.  I think bringing in the lefty was the right thing to do also, but too bad the Rocks don't have a lefty that can do the job right now.  He said he let Corpas go again because he'd only thrown 11 pitches.  I thought that was the right move as well, especially on the road.  It's tough to beat the Pads at their park when you're not at least a couple of runs ahead after six.  It's a tough place to hit, and their relievers are pretty damn good.
