MLB Mock Draft at MVN

Hey folks. MVN, the blog network that hosts Up In the Rockies (the blog that rockiesfan06 and I post at) is producing a MLB mock draft, as done by the MVN writers. You can check it out here. http://mvn.com/mlb-draft/

I know there's a ton of interest in the draft among a good many of you, so I thought you folks might want to see this. I'm picking for the Rox with the eighth selection, and my order of preference for who I'd like to grab looks like this:

Ross Detwiler
Max Scherzer
Jason Heyward

I like Michael Main, too, but I think he'd be a reach at our slot.

Anyway, enjoy the link. I'll post here again when the Rox have picked.

I voted Detwiler
but in my head, I'm starting to narrow it down between a choice few names after the discussion on here and through info elsewhere.

I believe Ross Detwiler is in the no brainer category with Price, Vitters and Porcello.  Wieters could make a case for no-brainer status, but then you also have to factor in money and holdout potential.  Subsequently, I believe those last three will be the first three picks of the draft.  I've read on BP a few weeks back that Detwiler to Pitt looks close, but is no certainty, so he stands the best chance to take a dip.

If these four are gone, I'm thinking Moskos and Sherzer are the next category.  I like that Moskos has reportedly kept his mid 90's heat while starting, and his natural tail on the heater gives him good groundball potential as well.  He also has a proven track record against big time competition, and needs little projectability.  He could move fast even as a starter.

Sherzer is basically the right handed version of Moskos with an injury history instead of a bullpen one.  He could be the fastest mover outside of Price of the pitching in this draft.

Outside these "signable six" (though Sherzer may pull a late July "Hochevar") I think there is a bit of a drop off.  I don't like that Heyward comes as primarily a high school first baseman because it pushes the bar higher for him to reach his ceiling.  I don't doubt his upside, but at pick eight there should be enough players with higher floors and comparable ceilings.  Most scouts don't even know what position Main will play, and he may even be a sup. first player for a team with multiple high picks that can afford the risk.

I think I like Blake Beavan after those six.  His size, fastball velocity, and heavy movement remind of of Chris Volstad of two years ago, and we now know Volstad is one of the better power(developing)/GB% pitchers in the minors.  After Beavan, I like Harvey, whose curveball could be the best breaking pitch of any 07 HS-er, and he matches it with heat and a durable, projectable frame.

Just my two cents, but I don't se any flagrant misses in those eight you have listed.

a naive question.....
What's the story with Wieters?  Why is he considered difficult to sign?  Would the Rockies be willing to do what it takes to sign him?

by DenverBears on May 14, 2007 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

His adviser is Scott Boras
and that means above slot money. Wieters is having a decent season but not one that makes you go "Wow!" He's a great hitter, made especially great if he can stick at catcher. Plus he's a Yellow Jacket and people try to compare him to Jason Varitek.

I'd draft him.

I'd be excited if we drafted him
as well, because that would suggest the Rockies are certain on what it takes to sign him and how soon.

It isn't about talent, but in the Rockies' case, he very well could pull a Hochevar.  While we would get the pick back next year, it isn't good practice to just carelessly toss picks at players that don't fit the organization.

I'd go in this order
Detwiler - See his Draft Debate.
Scherzer - Best college/indy league right hander in the draft with his control and velocity.
Moskos - Has adapted well to starting, should hold up as a starter in the pros.
Heyward - Great swing, power bat, will he eventually move to 1B?
Aumont - Canadian with size, needs to work on mechanics but has the stuff to be a front-line starter.
Main - More than likely will go at the end of the first round. Where do you put him, on the mound at first?
Brackman - An average season with Boras as his adviser.
Mills - He's murdering the ball for LCSC in the NAIA and he's also proved himself against D-I when he was at Fresno State. Still . . .

I voted Heyward
I'm not convinced that he has to go to first, but Detwiler's not far behind him, then the rest of my order would look like this:
  1. Scherzer
  2. Moustakas
  3. Moskos
  4. Aumont
  5. Mills

I voted Detwiler
Detwiler
Moskos
Scherzer (Moskos and Scherzer being interchangeable)
Heyward is interesting but I don't know enough about him.

If the Rockies feel that Burgess' contact issues are something that he can overcome I would still like to see them take a long look at him.

Just made it today...
And I took Moskos. I'll defend myself later but I've got to go get dinner right now...

Thumbs up from me
While I think Detwiler has a slight edge prospect-wise, Moskos is my personal preference.  He challenges hitters with a plus moving fastball  and power slider, and I like his closer mentality as a starter, where he challenges hitters early in the count.  Plus, he's less of a projection, and his 6'1 200 lbs. frame is more common than BA/scouts types would lead on.  Maybe Eric Bedard for a comparison?

Moskos hit pretty hard tonight
against NC State.  Ironically, as long as he didn't scare Colorado off, this likely helps the Rockies.  I think Colorado could be looking at one of these arms to fall based on value, and teams with a choice between a few top prospects could shy away from a pitcher struggling late, like Moskos.  Moskos has enough of a track record not to get overly concerned, but this could allow him to slide to eight.  Pitt going in the Mills/LaPorta direction wouldn't hurt either.

Need a unique talent
Drafting in the top 10 the Rockies need to pick up the types of talent that are so hard to get any other way.

A high quality left handed college pitcher would qualify, IMO.
