Game #29: Rockies vs. Reds; Hirsh vs. Matt Belisle

We already know that Hirsh had the worst start of his short career last season against the Reds, but did you know that Hirsh's opponent, Matt Belisle, took a perfect game into the sixth inning?

Will the outcome rest on the bullpens of each team? JD Arney over at Red Reporter has his own idea on what should happen to the Reds' bullpen.

The Rockies lost all four games at the GAB last year. Do the guys need any more encouragement than being reminded of that in order to take a series? The last series the Rockies won this season was the season-opening one against the D'Backs.

...Wow
I hadn't realized that the first series this year was our last win...I can't lie, that bums me out a bit.

Q
It's interesting to see Quintanilla in the lineup again.  With Carroll's recent struggles, is Quintanilla being given an opportunity to be the everyday second-baseman until Matsui returns?

And why is Scott Hatteberg leading off for the Reds?  That seems strange.

Free Ryan Spilborghs! Free Sean Barker too while you're at it.

Hatteberg
has a better OBP than Freel, which is why he's starting. Or at least that's what Red Reporter makes it sound like.

Isn't Freel the one
with the imaginary friend?

Todd!!!
Second four bagger of the year gives us an early 2-0 lead!

Hirsh
successfully negates two walks by striking out Dunn. But Dunn striking out isn't exactly a rare thing.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 5:33 PM MDT reply actions

I prefer a strikeout
to the other thing he does often, which is to hit home runs.

The ump tonight has the coolest strikeout call.  It looks like a cross between throwing an uppercut punch and having a seizure.

True Story
I went to a hockey game two months back with some friends of mine. The game was hotly contested and found it's way into a shootout. With the shootout score tied at one, and Houston down to their last shooter, the guy sitting behind me shouted "Show me your moves!"

I still crack up thinking about that.

That's great

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 5:52 PM MDT reply actions

Will Hatteberg
register an official AB tonight or will Hirsh keep walking him until he leaves the game? Though, as long as he doesn't score there isn't too much harm done.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 5:56 PM MDT reply actions

He didn't
swing at the first pitch! I always seem to celebrate this when it happens.

Bad decision there, but I'm sure Hirsh isn't complaining.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 6:09 PM MDT reply actions

All right, Brad!
It's just a short trip to home plate now.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 6:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Sarcastically?
Or encouragingly?

Either way, Torrealba and Quintanilla still don't strike fear into anyone's hearts, and to no one's surprise, poor Brandon is left marooned at first, never to touch the light of home again.

It's not as if either Yorvit or Q were going to hit homers and make it a short trip.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 6:30 PM MDT up reply actions

That's what I figured.
Three automatic outs in a lineup (Torrealba, Q, pitcher) isn't fun.

He'll be over 100 after five innings at this rate, I hope our pen is up to the task tonight.

At least he just got
a 1-2-3. About time.

I do not appreciate

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 6:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Does it seem like
he's caught more often than would be expected with his speed?

Of course on that particular play, the throw was awesome so he didn't have much of a chance.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 6:37 PM MDT up reply actions

slide step by Belisle also,
It would be only marginally easier to steal than a pitch out. With experience, hopefully Tulo will learn how to protect the baserunner in that situation without K'ing himself.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 6:50 PM MDT reply actions

Two whole hits for Atkins tonight!
The bases are loaded with none out...

I pull my head out of the sand, sniff hopefully at the air, and wonder what the Rockies will invent to make this go catastrophically awry.

Bases full
Do not leave a '1' on the scoreboard for this half of an inning.

Crap
but at least we tied it up. Better than nothing.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 6:54 PM MDT reply actions

With Belisle's struggles this inning
I wonder if Iannetta would have drawn the bases loaded walk there.

Heh
I just said that below. Am I mentally in sync with everyone on the Row? Weird.

Double play
with the bases loaded... good geezus I HATE those.

At least Iannetta could probably have worked a walk there.

Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 6:55 PM MDT reply actions

whoops, you beat me.
If youkilis is the Greek god of walks, Iannetta has to be the Roman version.

by Rox Girl on May 4, 2007 6:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Younger, smarter, more chiseled
and without the terrible furry beard.... not that anyone on our team may be in the mold of Youkilis at all...
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 6:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Q...pick up Torrealba
Getting only two runs out of having one run in and the bases loaded with nobody out would be disappointing...

K
so Omar needs to channel his inner Epps right now.

by A.J. Haefele on May 4, 2007 6:56 PM MDT reply actions

Torrealba and Q
disappoint as scheduled. At least we tied it. And pushed Belisle to 100 pitches... and the Reds bullpen is gawd-awful.

Now Willy will steal a base
Assuming he can aviod another perfect throw from Ross.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Ignore previous statement
I don't even know sometimes. Obviously he advanced on the error.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:12 PM MDT up reply actions

We've got the lead!
I was sure that Willy's bunt would be caught, but it wasn't and his speed made Encanarcion throw it away. Finley showed some speed even in his later years to score.

Let's add onto it!

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 7:09 PM MDT reply actions

YEAH
Willy T forces bad throw, and Finley comes all the way around to score. I think Willy would have been safe even if it had been a good throw. 5-4 Rocks.

Yea
They gave Willy a single.

That's that. I have my doubts about a one-run lead being enough for this pen.

Honestly
When you have a runner at third with nobody out, and he doesn't score, you don't deserve to win.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 7:24 PM MDT reply actions

Quick question
I looked away for a minute during Tulo's AB. Why wasn't Willy able to score on the groundball?

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:24 PM MDT reply actions

He hit

Geez
I'm at a loss for words.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 7:29 PM MDT reply actions

I hate our offense
Our middle relief is expected to be poor.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:29 PM MDT reply actions

Say what you will about our offense
We've gotten it into the late innings with a lead and watched it evaporate thanks to craptastic pitching more times than anyone cares to count. It's not our offense's fault that the bullpen is so terrible.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 7:30 PM MDT up reply actions

True
But I don't think anyone expects or expected this pitching staff to carry this team to the playoffs.

Obviously, most of the pen sucks, but until we can collectively learn to hit with RISP, it just doesn't matter.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Where I have seen this before?
Our clutch hitting is awful and over half our bullpen is poor.  This has all the makings of yet another pissing-me-off loss.

by rockiesfan06 on May 4, 2007 7:30 PM MDT reply actions

Goodman
said coming into this game, the pen has allowed at least one run in 24 of the 28 games. Now 25 of 29. That is absolutely pathetic.

HELL YA

thank you thank you. What a tag by Torrealba. Potentially game saving.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 7:36 PM MDT reply actions

Phew
Wow that was close.

Time for the offense to make up for that debacle last inning.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 7:37 PM MDT reply actions

Holliday/Tulo/catcher
(in this case Torrealba rather than Iannetta) are really getting good at that whole throw-em-out-at-home thing...

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 7:38 PM MDT reply actions

Look, I agree with you guys about the Pen.
But look at who's on it.

Between the original roster, and injuries, there's not many people you can put out there and be comfortable with.

Some good news
Florida came back to win against San Diego.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:41 PM MDT reply actions

Mabry again.
This is a mind-numbingly depressing pattern.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 7:42 PM MDT reply actions

Pinch hitters continue to be terrible
Mabry is now 1-17 in that role. At least we don't have to see his name on the lineup card very often - the same can't be said for Finley.

Baker seems to be lost on the bench now.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 7:43 PM MDT reply actions

I thought I heard something was wrong with Baker..
Does anyone remember hearing anything about it?

by Dino on May 4, 2007 7:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah
He doesn't have a left-handed bat or that vaunted veteran presence.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:09 PM MDT reply actions

Weird audio delay for a while
last inning. That was... interesting.

McClellan did a heck of a job though. Slider was looking good - now it's time for the offense to get some runs so Fuentes can come in and close out a win!

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 8:13 PM MDT reply actions

Let's win it, Rockies!
Seriously, that would really make me happy. I guess you guys don't care about my happiness... <guilt trip> <guilt trip>

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:16 PM MDT reply actions

Ok, the time is now.
Next inning is going to be poor if we don't win this in 10.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 8:17 PM MDT reply actions

Come on FSN

Two hits and two walks for Garrett tonight

with Hawpe with Torrealba and Quintanilla due up next just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Just said that...
Honestly. Hurdle?

No kidding
What was he thinking? And now Helton is of the game too, so when we don't score here we won't have Helton's bat in the future.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Bunting with Hawpe?
Our last good hitter? When the bottom of the order is coming up?

Uh..... Right then. Hawpe K's after the foul bunts. Now it's a mishmash of pinch-hitters and/or bad hitters. I fail to feel good about this.

Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:22 PM MDT reply actions

Unreal
This definitely counts as a game we SHOULD win..........could we possibly get a victory or is this just going to be another one of those millions of losses we have when we could easily have one?

by rockiesfan06 on May 4, 2007 8:24 PM MDT reply actions

That's just great!
I think I need to turn the shower on, sit down and start rocking back and forth.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 8:25 PM MDT reply actions

Awful decision
Hawpe bunting... wtf?!? Waste of an out there.

And I don't like taking Helton out of the game either. Now we're going to be left with an average or below first baseman out there in the field, and who knows how long this game will last.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 8:25 PM MDT reply actions

Carroll at third
Atkins playing first.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:26 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm done with Torrealba.
Stick Iannetta in there. At least the experience will do him good.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:25 PM MDT reply actions

Atkins playing first!
That's interesting.

Bautista in. White flag waving.

Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:26 PM MDT reply actions

We need that DP
right here that we hit into last inning. That would be great.

by OutHereInPA on May 4, 2007 8:30 PM MDT reply actions

Holy crap
We are a major league team right?

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:31 PM MDT reply actions

Nasty
He showed some great pitches right there.
Free Jason Bates!!

Willy T
showing some pop.  Come on Tulo.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:39 PM MDT reply actions

A double by Willy.
Make it a bit more worthwhile, Tulo.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 8:40 PM MDT reply actions

Taveras extra-base hit?
This happens so rarely, it must not be wasted.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:42 PM MDT reply actions

Calm down Tulo
Don't waste the guy on 2nd.  We don't want to see Garrett playing first again.

by oo_nrb on May 4, 2007 8:43 PM MDT reply actions

It is
his natural position and where he used to play at UCLA before he made the switch to third.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:45 PM MDT up reply actions

TULO
Comes through! Wow. Now is it too much to ask of the bullpen to close this out?

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:45 PM MDT reply actions

TULO!!!
I must reserve my optimism. The last time Tulo got us a lead in extras, we know what happened.

But...

TULO!

I love this kid.

Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:45 PM MDT reply actions

HELL YES!
Two outs, no one on base, and we get a run. That's so good to see.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 8:45 PM MDT reply actions

Fuentes time
Nail the door shut Brian - no heroics for the Reds please!

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 8:46 PM MDT reply actions

I'm terrified
Like I said... remember what happened the last time Tulo got us a run in extras...?

<covers eyes>

Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:46 PM MDT reply actions

I love Huson after Tulo's hit
"And now Tom Martin sits down and Brian Fuentes starts throwing in the bullpen."

And immediately the blood pressure of Purple Row dropped a few points :) It's as if he was reading our minds, but just wanted to reassure us.

by oo_nrb on May 4, 2007 8:47 PM MDT reply actions

Frazier
is in the booth tonight, not Huson.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Er, Goodman
Not Huson.  Sorry...haven't watched a broadcast in a while.

by oo_nrb on May 4, 2007 8:52 PM MDT up reply actions

I wish i could hear them
damn mlb tv is showing the reds home station.

by OutHereInPA on May 4, 2007 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions

One positive
thing about pulling Helton, who thinks Atkins makes that play at third?

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:49 PM MDT reply actions

I agree
Major kudos to Carroll for that play.

by oo_nrb on May 4, 2007 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm so scared
No walks!!!

Go Rockies!
And LA and SD lost today. I will take it. Have a good one people.

by Dino on May 4, 2007 8:56 PM MDT reply actions

ROX WIN
Thank you Tulo for coming through!  It feels so good to beat the Reds in their ballpark.

by oo_nrb on May 4, 2007 8:56 PM MDT reply actions

HURRAY!!
Today is awesome. Why? The Cards, A's, and Rockies all won on the same day for the first time all season.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:56 PM MDT reply actions

I've said it before
but I'll say it again: that was a game the Rockies had in their control, they ALMOST pulled the stunts of April, but they rebounded nicely and won a game that they should have.  Great win!

by rockiesfan06 on May 4, 2007 8:56 PM MDT reply actions

Ballgame
Man did we need that. Thank you Willy, Tulo, McClellan, Bautista and Fuentes.

by Knepster on May 4, 2007 8:56 PM MDT reply actions

Rox win!!!
Very big win tonight - it seemed like the Rockies didn't want to win the ballgame at times, but they were able to get the job done in the end.

The big hero is Tulo of course but an honorable mention to the job the bullpen (minus Affeldt) did.

by avsfan4ever33 on May 4, 2007 8:57 PM MDT reply actions

Phew!
A much needed win, but now they'll need to follow it up with at least one more.

by Russ Oates on May 4, 2007 8:57 PM MDT reply actions

Yes
We can't just keep figuring out new ways to only win one by mixing up the order of our losses.
Get Demented. You know you want to.

by Silverblood on May 4, 2007 8:58 PM MDT up reply actions

High fives all around!
I'll now go back to trying to read all of the intros on the Row Call.

by A.J. Haefele on May 4, 2007 8:57 PM MDT reply actions

Lmao
Out of curiosity, I decided to skim the Reds game thread to see the other side of it. My favorite part was the Taveras double in 11th drew a "damn. That dude is quick like a bunny."

Just thought I would share.

by A.J. Haefele on May 4, 2007 9:14 PM MDT reply actions

hahaha
That's funny stuff.
