Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Game #31: Fogg vs. Bronson Arroyo

Did the team turn a corner last night? Can the guys string together more than two wins in a row? After Friday's victory the team accomplished more at the Great American Ball Park this season than last. Take two from the Reds on the road, even better. Sweep the team, the best thing of all.

This past week the Rockies scored the fourth most runs (32) going in to today, behind only San Francisco (43), Milwaukee (41) and the Yankees (38). A few more runs by the Rockies and the appearance of this Josh, the weekend will be an excellent one.

I'm glad Iannetta's starting again
I'm betting it's a switch from how Hurdle originally pencilled in before the weekend since he's playing in a day game after a night game. Chris' bat is just warming up when Yorvit's is hiding in the freezer, though, so it's the right call.

by Rox Girl on May 6, 2007 12:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed
And Iannetta will never get out of a slump without consistent playing time. He's done well his last two starts, so with luck, he's coming out of his earlier slumps.

Not that it has anything to do with the Rockies
but Roger Clemens announced he'll pitch with the Yankees this season.

Just saw that.
I'm thrilled to have him out of Houston.

clemens is a douche
i hate that guy.  i remember back in february when people were asking him where he would play this year, he talked about how he just wanted a chance to win a championship.  and then he said something along the lines of: "for me, last season in houston was a waste of time.  since we didnt make the playoffs, i felt like there was no point in me even playing."  hey asshead,  maybe if you had shown up to play in april instead of july, the astros wouldnt have missed the playoffs by 1 game like they did.  what a dick.

Dude
I'm RIGHT THERE with you. Being in Houston, I have to deal with the entire city being all over his nuts ALL THE TIME. I think Astros fans are the only ones who love this guy. Maybe they won't after this, but I seriously doubt it. He's just a god down here, and he couldn't be a bigger jerk if he tried. He's an arrogant prick (naming all of his kids with the letter "K"?? COME ON) who should go into the HOF without a cap because he's only truly been a member of Team Clemens for his entire career.

Larry, you pretty well nailed my feelings about Clemens in your post headline, so I won't elaborate except to say that while he may be the worst person in the world, he is certainly one of the best I've ever seen.

Not that he didn't before this, but now it makes the Astros look really short sighted for pulling the trigger on that. Not that I'm complaining, of course.

im usually not the type to panic and demand changes when someone has a few bad games (see my support of taveras, tulo, and ianetta back in mid-april) but one more start like this out of fogg and i think its time to take a serious look at some other options.  jimenez, whoever.  we can keep putting a guy out there that doesnt get through 5.

the Rockies won close to half of Fogg's starts last year.  When Fogg is pitching well, he is pretty decent (especially for a #5 starter), but when he is off, well....

Arroyo tends to do well
before the bullpen blows it for him. He's got a 2.42 ERA, he does have some redeeming value, and it's not like he's a scrub we can't hit. Then again, if Fogg can't hold them, it won't matter what we can come up with off that shitaceous Reds pen.

to be fair to hurdle
i think this is a great situation to use martin in, if you want to see if hes worth having around.  the bullpen's been taxed lately, martin's probably been the least taxed among everyone down there ever since he came back, this is only a medium pressure situation (not a one run or tie game), and youre giving him a chance to bounce back from a bad outing last night.  so im defending hurdle's choice of martin.  am i defending martin himself?  not a chance.  this further confirms what we all already knew- this guy cant get major league hitters out, regardless of what side of the plate they hit from.

right
i agree, im just saying that if hes going to be on the roster... you have to use him some time, or else youre playing with 24 players... this seemed like one of the very very very few occasions where using him wasnt a truly horrible idea.  dont get me wrong, i want him gone as much as the next guy, i just think people saying "hurdle, what are you doing!?!" dont realize that if o'dowd insists on keeping martin around, then hurdle has to use him SOMEtime... lets just hope hes gone soon.

He's doubled and walked today
He's a veteran, he's got some presence, he knows how to have a good at-bat (he just doesn't do so often enough).

Let's trade Finley
for Hamilton. We can throw in Martin and BK to "even out" the deal.

:)

Let's go Matt!
Could really use a big fly here.

Matt, please make up for the damage Martin inflicted.

First pitch swinging yet again and he grounds into a double play.

Dang
first pitch swinging after 2 straight walks

That's always a pretty reliable sign that the guys have packed it in for the afternoon.

Non baseball related
but I've got the Spurs-Suns game also going on. The Spurs whine and complain about darn near EVERYTHING. It's unfortunate to see.

by A.J. Haefele on May 6, 2007 3:40 PM MDT reply actions

F#$@ the Spurs
What a loathsome team, from top to bottom. Their whole style - boring basketball, constant whining and flopping - has been a big part of why I don't watch the NBA anymore except for the Nuggets.

If I wanted to see a bunch of goofy looking foreigners flopping, I'd watch soccer. And I would rather gouge out my eyeballs than watch soccer.

And then you have the Suns
With the wonderful Shawn Marion who, when asked if he would rather have a championship or be the best player on the team, actually stopped and had to think about the answer. What a selfish jerk.

Someone better have a
magical seven-run home run this inning. No one on, but the guy launches a pitch into the stands for seven runs.

I  guess that only happened in my dreams last night.

How my afternoon was ruined:
Two words: Tom Martin.

Had a nice brunch today with the fam, decent food. I get back into the car and turn on the radio. Hear that the Rocks scored 3 in the top of the 6th to pull within two. Feeling pretty good right about now, know how the Reds' pen has struggled. Then I hear we are bringing in Tom Freaking Martin in a close game. I immediately start cursing and hitting the steering wheel. What happens next? He gives up a bomb to Farney. I turn off the radio in disgust.
Then I get even grumpier, nothing to do with the Rockies. I'm cruising along the freeway, stewing, and come up behind a car with Texas plates. No offense to anyone, but I'm not a fan of Texas to begin with. So I see there's bumper sticker on the back of the car, and apprehensively, I read it. Big mistake. "Caution: I brake for all Wal-Mart stores." Are you kidding me? If there's one thing I dislike more than Texas, it's Wal-Mart. grrrrr

by Knepster on May 6, 2007 4:17 PM MDT reply actions

Ahaha
I'm from Denver originally, but am stuck in TX for another 5 years or so. Driving down here is sort of a nuance required for people to get to their steakhouse and then to get home to shower in the leftover grease. Attack Texas at will.

by A.J. Haefele on May 6, 2007 4:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Affeldt/Martin
simply cannot get hitters out and should not be on this team. Period. Isn't this obvious by now? Of course, since O'Dowd brilliantly wasted a ludicrous $6M combined  on Hawkins and Kim, there's very little to go around.

And now Taveras, just starting to be an impact player, may be out, joining Matsui, who is desperately needed, and Lopez, who is desperately needed.

But are Hurdle and O'Dowd worried? With those abysmal gift two-year contracts, they have undeserved security and we've got to watch their tired act for almost three more seasons.

by moose14 on May 6, 2007 4:30 PM MDT reply actions

sort of...
agree on martin... disagree on affeldt.  hes never quite put it all togethe but is certainly capable of getting guys out at the major league level.  look at his stats from most of april, he was dominant up until about a week and a half ago.

also, how are injuries to key players hurdle and o'dowd's fault again?
