Let's solve Penny
Penny isn't THAT good.

Always sort of sad to see him make our hitters look stupid.

I expected to see
more bench guys starting to give the regulars a rest. No Spillbourghs? I realize Sullivan did well last night.  No Stewart?

This is one of those games
when Helton should get a day off, with Atkins moving across the diamond and Stewart manning third base.

Major league roster
Nice to see the major league roster today.

I can't quite figure out why Hurdle likes to throw out a bunch of subs when the rookies are on the mound.

That game that U-ball had against the Cubs made me sick (I was there and when I saw the starting line-up I about choked).

by MADness on Aug 19, 2007 2:09 PM MDT reply actions

Nice start
Kaz walks, and makes Penny work a little bit.

Why is Sully starting?
I realize he had a good game last night, but give me Spilly any day of the week (who had the leadoff 14th inning double and scored the winning run).

by Silverblood on Aug 19, 2007 2:20 PM MDT reply actions

And Sullivan
just played 14 innings.  I expected Spilly either in CF or giving one of the corner OF a day off.

And why are we not playing Stewart?

I honestly
couldn't tell you. I'd expect Atkins to spell Helton at first (no longer as young as he used to be, after all) and let Ian play third. I would have liked very much to see that happen; I want to see more of what Stew can do. But, well, Clint Hurdle.

As I said
Bring Julio in in the eighth after he gave up two runs. Hurdle does it again. This time, he doesn't even have defensive miscues to fall back on. And Julio blows it again, this time with help from the Royals version of Affeldt. And I am spitting, spitting mad.

I'm tired of this horseshit
Unless he's hurting and is incapable of going back-to-back days, there was no reason to not go to Fuentes in the eighth after Julio faltered.

And I don't know what the hell's gotten into Affeldt, but he's trying to sink our season by himself on this road trip.

Affeldt is going through
a "correction" or more specifically, "regression to the mean."  His obscenely low BABIP has now reversed trend, and the K rate, walk ratio, and K/BB ratio were never that impressive.

If we called up Weathers from Low A
even with his inconsistency with command in the zone (not balls and strikes but hitting spots) how worse off would we be?  Any?

Also, why not Morillo?  If we can justify Julio as an eighth inning guy, how can we deny Morillo a chance?  He may not be special but he's a cheaper version that can walk and K batters like the rest of 'em.

You HAVE to win this exact type of game
if you want to be considered a legitimate contender; maybe Affeldt's prior seasons with terrible KC teams haven't prepared him fior an honest-to-goodness playoff race. Or maybe he was never any good in the clutch.

7 games against bad teams
coming up. We absolutely need to dominate the Buccos and Nats. No excuses.

by avsfan4ever33 on Aug 19, 2007 5:16 PM MDT reply actions

At the end of the day
we're still only three back.  So despite a heartbreaking road trip, we can really make headway over the next seven games.

That said, the bullpen does need a reshuffling, and more chances need to be taken.  I'd consider moving Buchholz to 7th-8th inning duty and dropping Affeldt to long man/LOOGY duties.  The use of Fuentes late is fine, but again he's not the same pitcher we remember, and should only pitch in lefty heavy spots.  Not strictly a lefty specialist, but in an Okajima lefty-heavy type role.  I'd like to see what Morillo can do after a solid AA season, but it looks like we'll have to wait for September to see if he can be a fixture in the bullpen.

by David OhNo on Aug 19, 2007 5:19 PM MDT reply actions

Corpas didn't pitch Thursday or Friday...
And threw only 10 pitches for the save last night.  What's wrong with a 5-out save in such a crucial situation???

by alexcolfax on Aug 19, 2007 5:21 PM MDT reply actions

The multiple inning save
is in the second edition of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Bullpen Management."  I'm not sure Hurdle has updated his copy yet.

On a slightly related note, does anyone else find it funny that "Baseball for Dummies" was written by Joe Morgan?

by David OhNo on Aug 19, 2007 5:24 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know if the proper term
is 'Hurdlism' since other managers act like this, but being a closer means he can only get three outs in this '-ism'.

by Silverblood on Aug 19, 2007 5:23 PM MDT reply actions

I agree 100% re: bullpen...
but "now or never" really comes against divisional foes you're in contention with for the wild card. And don't overlook the Nats; as they proved in DC last month against the Rox, they can be a very pesky and feisty foe.

by moose14 on Aug 19, 2007 5:26 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not overlooking them
Trust me. I'm worried that we can't correct the spin, but we're given a golden opportunity to do so at home after a wrenching road trip. The schedule couldn't get more opportune, so if we can't take advantage of it, we're sunk. In that case, it is now or never.

Make Affeldt the long man
He should not be entrusted with any more leads in the late innings. Buchholz is going well and Affeldt obviously is not, but the pivotal questions remain:  can Hurdle see it and will ne act on it? In the past, his changes of personnel have come at glacial pace, if then.

by moose14 on Aug 19, 2007 5:42 PM MDT reply actions

Next week?
I realize this week is done, and water under the bridge, but if we wanted to really gain ground in the playoff race, we could have actually beaten a couple of them in San Diego and LA.

We just can't seem to win games against good teams, especially on the road.  Too many, woulda, coulda, shoulda's that end up just be not enough.  We are a good young team.  Just not better then say...the Padres or the Dodgers, or the Braves.  To think we can some how back into the playoff race by beating up on the Pirates, or the Nationals (who have a very good record in the last month by the way) when we couldn't beat the teams that actually mattered just seems like purple colored wishful thinking.

Our Bullpen has imploded, we don't have a lefty specialist as our 2 lefties, can't get out lefties any more, and our rotation has lost 3 starters in 3 weeks, and the bad part one of them wasn't named Fogg. (who for the record I hope is back next year as a long man/6th starter out of the pen)

I'm afraid, reality is sinking in for me.  We are going to be close...but just not close enough.  The rising tide, that is the end of the season will wash us away with the other pretenders.

Speaking of
Lefty specialists and the BP, and this year being over, what is everyone's opinion of next year's BP and the pitching staff as a whole?  I think 08's BP should be Corpas, Julio, Bucholtz, Rami, Morillo, Clarke, Weathers (eventually), and a left specialist (whether that be Fuentes, a FA, or a trade pickup).  We need to get a lefty who can actually dominate other lefties, and I don't think we have that in our system right now.

As for starters, I like Cook, Francis, Jimenez, Morales, and guys like Hirsh, Fogg and Lopez for the final spot.  I think we may have a very strong staff in '08.  I for one am looking forward to next year, and I think it should be the year to go for it.

by smokinRox on Aug 19, 2007 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

i like both lopez and hirsh a lot
but we should probably let one or both of them walk.  the money they can command isn't worth it.  i know the injuries the team has sustained in the past month have shown that you can never have too much starting pitching, but even without these two we have 6 solid guys, and 7 if reynolds recovers from his injury.  i don't know, maybe it would be good to keep one of lopez/fogg.  but it could end up being a sunk cost if the young guys continue the mild success they've had so far this year.

08 Pitching
the arms in the bull pen are hard to predict, as most pens seem to rotate names and bodies through out the majors.  I'd like to resign Julio.  I'd love to see Buchholtz get more late inning work.  I'd love to see Morrillo next year (heck I'd love to see him NOW). Corpas is young, and we control him.

I'd like to see Fuentes stay if he can regain some control and get out lefties.  If not, then he may have value on the trade market.  If he goes we need a LOGGY bad, as I don't want to see Affeldt back at all. The rest is a scrum between veterans signed to minor league opt-out deals, and true minor leaguers like Ramirez that might step up.

Rotation: Lopez is a FA, and I'm not sure we need him. Fogg we have an option on (I think) If he would be a long man/6th starter type I'd love for him to be back.  With a rotation of Francis, Cook, Hirsh, Jimenez, and Moralles in 08 with Reynolds and Fogg to step in case of injury, I like that rotation a lot!  But with Hurdle I can see him starting Fogg, and sending one of the kids back to AAA for "seasoning"

The rotation could change if the Twins would take Stewart or Atkins and Hirsh for Santana prior to his walk year. Then Santana falls is love with Denver, and the Humidor, and signs a very long and cheap extension.

Lefties
Tommy Baumgarner in Asheville has been fairly dominating in both years in the organization and sufficiently effective he became the closer (albeit because of injuries) until Casey Weathers was deemed ready to assume the position and didn't blow too many opportunities, a lot of strike outs.  Then again, it would require changing the pattern of only advancing players a level a year and giving them a chance to move up if their skills warranted the progression.
