Game #107: Hirsh vs VandenHurk

Jason Hirsh returns to the Rockies rotation and hopes to give us series victory over the Marlins tonight. With San Diego beating up on Arizona this afternoon, it would be a good chance to creep back to a three and a half game deficit within the division. Hirsh says he's come out of his last rehab start with newfound confidence in his fastball. VandenHurk enters with what's been a rather lucky season in terms of wins and losses given how much he's been smacked around. He's just the type of starting pitcher our team seems to struggle the most against this year however, that is to say, he's a starting pitcher who on the surface seems better suited for middle relief. Let's hope that trend reverses and we actually hit a weaker opponent like we should for once.

Go Rockies!

That's the Atkins
That makes me want to see Stewart play in Springs for a while longer.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 5:21 PM MDT reply actions

VandenHurk
threw 41 pitches in the first inning.  That sounds like a long night waiting to happen for the Marlins bullpen.

I really, really, really want to see
Hirsh have a solid outing.

C'mon Jason
Come out with a strong showing and give us the rotational support we so badly need.

That does not qualify.

Dammit
Not a good start.

Well, I was sort of expecting that.

by Russ Oates on Aug 2, 2007 5:29 PM MDT reply actions

I've defended their recent road struggles
But please do not lose 2 of 3 to the Marlins. Please. You won't stay in the playoff race too long losing series like this.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 5:30 PM MDT reply actions

Is the book out on Tulo?
With 2 strikes on him he's prone to swing at a letter high fastball.

Hirsh
Cut down on the walks. It got you into trouble last time.
Get Demented. I already am, and in severe emotional pain to boot.

by Silverblood on Aug 2, 2007 5:45 PM MDT reply actions

Hirsh really looks good sometimes
And makes you think he could be a legit MLB starter. I don't think he trusts his pitches enough, which is foolish because he has some pretty nasty stuff. He really needs to string together some quality starts and gain some confidence. I really like the guy as a future part of this rotation.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 5:50 PM MDT reply actions

Wow
The Marlins fan base is pathetic. How long can they stay there? I didn't realize how bad it actually was. That's embarassing.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 6:09 PM MDT reply actions

Great throws
Couldn't have been much better - Amezega was just a fraction of a second faster than the throws.

by MADness on Aug 2, 2007 6:23 PM MDT reply actions

So....
There is someone else on here. Good to know.

Why would we want to make up a game on the D-backs?

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

We can't steal 2nd
They still 3rd. Great.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 6:50 PM MDT reply actions

Hirsh can strike out Cabrera three times,
but he can allowed Alfredo Amezaga to hit a home run in the game, only his 10th career homer.

That's the amazing thing about him
And why I think he could be a legit MLB pitcher. He obviously has the stuff, it's just about confidence and concentration at this point in his young career.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Big double play!
Huge! We're still in this thing somehow. C'mon guys don't lose 2 outta 3 to the damn Marlins, I'm begging you.

Bad, bad inning.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence

by Russ Oates on Aug 2, 2007 7:02 PM MDT reply actions

This is a frustrating and lifeless game
to watch. Well, it's a bad team, the starter had an ERA of 7, and we need to win a series on the road. Of course we're losing. The guys are driving me nuts right now.

Great job by Buchholz preventing any damage from Hirsh's ugly 6th inning.

Yeay!!
Corpas might be relenquishing the closer role back to Fuentes after all if he keeps making things so nerve-racking, though.

by Rox Girl on Aug 2, 2007 8:23 PM MDT reply actions

Geez
He just let one guy on base. You can't be perfect all the time.

by stuntdaddy1 on Aug 2, 2007 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions

One guy on base and a couple more close calls,
On sharp contact. Combined with his performance the last time out. I'm not saying to replace him, but he's allowing far too many baserunners to make any of us comfortable and Hurdle has a short hook for young players. I don't trust Clint to leave well enough alone in this case with Fuentes there.

by Rox Girl on Aug 3, 2007 5:20 AM MDT up reply actions

I assume
that Fuentes will be used in a setup role when he first comes back, and that if he's effective, he'll move back into the closer's spot by Septemeber.  I'm not sure that's all bad.  Manny may be getting a little tired, and maybe going back to a setup role might give him a bit of a breather, and make him more effective in September.

Radio and TV
Aren't in synch, radio calls are heard before it happens on the screen.

Also, it's Jeff Kingery and Jack Corrigan. I agree, they should just simulcast them on TV and radio.

Great win!
Atlanta look out, this is a different Rockies team, the best we've seen around here for a long time. I just get a different feeling about this team than anything we've put on the field in the past. I'm lovin it.
