Looks a lot like the 2009 Rockies
And has the same questions throughout the lineup: No true ace, 1st and 2nd base, and lack of another big bat in the middle of the lineup. If we’re going to build another contender, they need to make a big move to fill one of those holes or find a big-time pitcher who can move fast in the draft this year.

The big bats are there, or could be
Stewart, plus Gonzalez, plus Iannetta/McKenry gives three positions with 30 HR potential, and the only really big question of not living up to that is Gonzalez. If he works out we’re in excellent shape, if not, we could be pretty miserable. Gonzalez will be one question that’s answered between now and then, second base is another. First base should be manned by Hawpe for 2011, leaving an opening in the OF that won’t be terribly hard to fill. For 2012, I’d expect Iannetta to move to first and McKenry plus Rosario will take over the catching duties. Questions in the rotation should have relatively clear answers as well, frankly I like the idea of signing JDLR to a contract if he continues his success in 2009. If he maintains his performance a Jimenez/Cook/JDLR/Friedrich/Morales rotation looks really good from a scouting standpoint, and if either of those two bottom LHP’s aren’t ready, somebody from the Hirsh/Reynolds/Smith group should have stepped up to be a quality #4 MLB starter at least.
To the diarist and everybody, I would be careful not to underestimate Hector Gomez’s chances of cracking the 2011 lineup. I’m not sure where, could be second base or that OF slot, but look for his bat to really take off the next two seasons.

Iannetta at 1st
Is an idea I like and we could kill two birds with one stone: filling 1st base and adding another power bat in McKenry/Rosario. My biggest issue with the rotation is that we’d still be lacking a clear-cut ace unless Jimenez reaches that level. Of course, someone like Chacin could slip into that role too, just probably not by 2011.
And I hope you’re right about Gomez. The potential’s obviously there if he can improve on pitch selection, which he’s young enough to do.

Chacin
Are you not projecting him to hit the majors successfully?

I'm guessing that in 2011 he may not be enough of an asset
to beat out the other five, at least at the start of the year, but by 2012 he should be a rotation regular. Although I realize that this is going at the low end of my expectations for him when at the same time I’m being kind of optimistic with Morales, so take that for what you will. I do think Jhoulys may take a couple of seasons to grow into the pitcher he can become and adjust to the MLB, but if he transitions quickly, so much the better. It still seems to me that the Rockies rotation will be in a much more stable condition over the next five or so seasons than it has been at any point in the team’s history. There are a lot more options available to us than we normally have, and a Jimenez/Chacin anchor has a lot more upside than a Jennings/Chacon pairing.

Although, I had Friedrich at #5?
Chacin should be a better choice for the fifth slot in 2011, it was a mistake to have Christian ahead of him.

Put EY in center
EY is going to end up in the outfield with his speed and the dimensions of Coors. Fowler and Gonzalez allow a lot of ground to be covered and can help with the big gaps. If not, Seth Smith is playing one of the corners.
On the pitching side, there’s no way that Jiminez is not the ace of the staff in 2011, and I agrre that Chacin is there and maybe Lindsay gets healthy and contributes. Hawpe end up in Texas playing beside Hamilton in some type of deal, and street is not a part of the bullpen at all…if he stays, its only for this year. The only problem with the bullpen of the future is control which is really draining to watch. Almost every guy on there has had major control issues to go along with good stuff. We need Bucholz to stay around, and for more players to take his lead in going with their two best pitches.
