Cabrera, Patton taken in Rule 5 draft
The San Diego Padres took infielder Everth Cabrera with the third selection in this year's Rule 5 draft, a few picks later, the Cincinnati Reds picked up right-handed relief arm David Patton.
The speedy Cabrera ranked as Purple Row's 21st best prospect according to our most recent PuRPs polling and played the 2008 season in Asheville. Patton had a strong campaign for Modesto, but looked particularly sharp in fall league work in both Hawaii and Arizona.

Do we have any way to stay updated on these?

MLB.com broadcast it live,
So the source in this case was me watching it. They haven’t updated their tracker as of yet, but hopefully that link will work at some point. The Rockies were otherwise safe in the MLB and AAA phases, I stopped watching after that, but it means Corey Wimberly, Daniel Mayora and Matt Miller were all passed up.
Not in the AAA phase.
I’m not sure yet about the AA phase, but usually players selected there are just depth fills.
confused
I understand that the Rule 5 draft is where teams can select people from other rosters who aren’t protected by the 40 man and have been with the team for X amount of time. If they don’t have them on the MLB roster by a date or for an amount of time? they get sent back to their original team.
What’s the deal with the phases?

It's a bit complicated, Sons of Sam Horn has a decent summary
There are also two minor league phases to the Rule 5 draft: the AAA and AA phase. In addition to setting a 40-man roster, organizations are required to submit a AAA and AA roster of players eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Note that these rosters are larger than regular-season AAA and AA rosters and their composition during this phase is determined by the organizations evaluation of a player, not the player’s current level; the organization will place players they value more highly on the AAA roster.
After the Major League phase, the AAA phase takes place, in which other organizations can pluck players on other teams’ AA rosters. During the AA phase, organizations can take Rule 5-eligible players on neither roster. The minor league Rule 5 draft is primarily a roster-filling exercise and players taken rarely reach the major leagues, not to mention establish themselves as big-league players. Unlike the Major League phase, players drafted in the AAA phase are not required to play at AAA, nor are AA draftees required to play in AA. It costs $12,000 to select a player in the AAA phase and $4,000 in the AA phase.
Ah
So you fill out the minor leagues and pay the teams for the people you took. I see.

Rule V = Money Scheme
It sounds like Odowd was playing his moneymaking ploy in this downtrodden economy.
Welcome back Don Baylor. You're like a cold turkey sandwich, an oldie but a goodie!!
Cabrera
It would be a huge jump for Everth to go from low A ball to MLB, so it’s hard to believe he’ll stick on a major league roster for a full season.
Patton could stick though…
I hope so, in regards to Cabrera...
I’d hate to lose Patton, too, though. A decent middle ground outcome might be if SD or Cincy decide they want to keep the players but can’t hold them on the roster and trade us prospects in areas we’re more deficient in.
I didn't know...
that you could trade FO staff. Are there any in SD or Cincy that we would have interst in??
TGFPR!!
Patton
Traded to the Cubs for cash. More or less likely to come back now?
With Wood and Howry gone, I’d guess the Cubs intend to make him stick.
Much more likely to come back now.
Keeping a Rule 5 pick all year is hard enough on a non-contender like the Padres, on one of the best teams in the league? You can pretty much forget about it. I think the only three ways we lose Patton now is through a waiver claim by another club after the Cubs release him, by them working out a trade with us after he isn’t claimed, or by some miracle bump in his progress this winter. All of these chances together don’t come close to the likelihood that he’s just returned in the Spring for $25,000.
Trade option
I bet you’re right about a trade scenario. I could see the Padres looking at Cabrera in their camp this spring then, if they like him, offering a trade to keep him in their farm system and not on the 25 man roster. The Rockies should be able to get a decent prospect in return because Everth has a some value to the Rockies and probably would like to have him back.
"Rockies Love"
why did I just get a vision of Denny Neagle’s hooker with that phrase?
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
Sickels
Today John SIckels started a discussion of Rockies Prospects: www.monorleagueball.com. He plans to have his list of Rockies top 20 prospects up in a few days.
help us laymen understand this
so does cabbrera have to make their MLB roster? or did he go in the minor league part and he is just gone from the system? I thought he could just move into their minor league system and NOT have to make their big league roster. Please fill me in
He has to stay on their 25 man roster for the entire season
At least 90 days of which have to be active (non-DL). If the Padres decide he’s not going to cut it, they have to waive him (and expose him to being selected by the other 28 teams) before offering him back to the Rockies for $25,000 or working out a trade to keep him and put him in their own minor league system.
ok so....
basically it is doubtful the rockies will see the speedy guy again? thats too bad but i guess they had quite a few middle guys at the lower level anyway
Probably about 50-50
Maybe a little better in the Rockies favor because he was at such a low level and that’s an awfully big leap to take for a full season.
Cabrera
Sucks to lose Cabrera. I hope he is purchased back. I liked his potential more than that of the other speedy middle infielders in the system.
What I get from this
Scenario 1) The Friars keep him all year. This implies their team is horrible enough to have a spot for a Single-A player and they’re doomed to the cellar. Few things would make me happier than forcing those whiners from the play-in game to watch their team collapse in the cellar the next two years.
Scenario 2) We get him back.
Everth is a heck of a talent, but at least we have depth at that position. No matter how this turns out, I’ll be happy.
