Rockies make SI Pictures of the Year

8

A Rockies photo made the SI special issue Pictures of the Year: The Best Sports Photos of 2008. It's from the August 27 game in San Francisco, and features Rockies Chris Iannetta and (of all people) Livan Hernandez. I can't find an actual gallery including this photo on SI.com, so I had to link to the photo on the US Presswire site. Following is the copy that accompanies the photo in the print issue: In a unanimous decision, Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta (left) and pitcher Livan Hernandez joined umpire Rob Drake in calling the Giants' Dave Roberts out at the plate to end the sixth inning at AT&T Park. Colorado led 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth when San Francisco's Roberts, who had tripled, attempted to score from third on Fred Lewis's fly-out to center. Rockies outfielder Willy Taveras gunned Roberts down with a perfect one-hop throw. A game-save? Nope, the Giants won anyway, 4-1. Photographer Kyle Terada, US Presswire: "This photo shows the magnitude of the moment: Roberts dejected while the Rockies celebrate with a lot of emotion. Each individual is nicely placed in the frame--and it's fun that it looks like the umpire knocked Roberts out."
