Renck: Jason Marquis not likely; Rockies struggle to find taker for Luis Vizcaino
Renck's reporting that the Rockies don't have the money for Marquis. Also, given that ridiculous contract he signed and his poor performance last season, Luis Vizcaino isn't likely to be traded, even though the Rockies want to do so.

Tough to find takers for Vizcaino?
That’s like saying it’s tough to find takers for the clap.
(OK, that’s not 100% fair – Viz still has strikeout stuff, but my word, 10 homers in 46 innings is every kind of obscene. If the Rox have any sense, he never pitches before the seventh and never faces a lefty – righties put up a .170/.252/.277 line against him last year.)
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

I would still be willing to take a chance on Viz.
just not in a high leverage situation.
A year removed from Joe Torre’s abuse and only pitching 46 innings last year, he should be better?, right?
Is it 2009 yet? Seriously?........Now? no......How about now?

Agreed
I think Viz could really rebound next year after virtually taking a year off. Relief pitchers rarely can go a career without their arm going haywire. He’s due. With Street, Corpas and Buchholz ahead of him (maybe Fuentes if he doesn’t get the offer he wants from Milwaukee), Viz would be pitching in only washup situations. If he can pitch to his ability, he could give the Rockies the deepest pen in the league.

Viz's Contract
He only has a year reminaing in which he’s owed $3.75M. He’s probably about a $1.5M overpaid, but that is more than made up for by only being under contract for a year. He’d have very little value as a free agent this season, but as a trade object (maybe not now, but later in the winter or during camp) he might be worth a decent low-level prospect or a draft pick.
His ‘08 splits shows he should probably never be used against lefties, ever. The ROOGY label above fits. His home/road career splits are more normal than last year though, and he put up a decent line at Coors, so other teams should be able to see some value, especially if they listen the announcers talk about how “blessed” he is to have that rubber arm. Which is probably why the ball bounces farther when he pitches. Maybe when the Mets are done idolizing Heilman, they’ll realize that a Vizcaino-Heilman swap is about as good as it’s going to get for them.

No money for Marquis?
How embarassing, since the Cubs seem to have enough money, and they filed Chapter 11 today. Maybe that’s why — too much money spent on players like Marquis.
Actually, we didn’t want Marquis anyway. He’s washed up & was only mediocre to begin with.

Pssshhht.
You wanna know “embarrassing”?
This is interestingly at odds with another report which says Loretta and Damion Easley are “too expensive” for Arizona, and the team is expected to have to fend off Pittsburgh, also reported as interested in the free-agent.
We’re in danger of “having to fend off Pittsburgh” for a really crappy free agent. Now THAT’S embarrassing.

Le sigh.
Damion Freaking Easley is “too expensive”.
Well, it was nice being able to contend, while it lasted….

Let it ride!
I bet they’re not so strapped for cash that they’re staying across the street at the Barbary Coast, although I’d be in favor of it, if it meant stepping up in the free agent market. Marquis is four years removed from his career year and has been on a downward slide since. Moving to Colorado’s not going to reverse that trend. The Rockies need to make sure they don’t make a move just to make a move. I’d much rather take my chances with Viz over Heilman. Viz is much more likely to bounce back on track than for Heilman to all of a sudden break out.

Also,
the Cubs are NOT part of the bankruptcy filing; nor is Wrigley Field. The Tribune Company left them out. (Fortunately for them — the Cubs might be the most valuable asset they’ve got, besides corporate goodwill)
