Boy can this guy run. I’d hate to see him go, but I also think a team might struggle to keep him on their 25 man roster for an entire year, so that there is some interest doesn’t mean he will get taken.
His not being on the 40-man roster is a tribute to how much improvement EY2 has shown since coming to pro baseball.
Absolutely, Wimb was a victim of numbers,
As the Rockies would have protected him in other seasons. Like you, I have a hard time imagining a team keeping his less than stellar bat and glove around for an entire season just for the pinch-running advantage, but he’s a decent gamble for teams to take. I could see him selected on a flier that he turns up in Spring with some added hitting ability, but then returned quickly if/when he doesn’t.
Eh
We already have Taveras, Dex, and EY. It’d be too bad, but I don’t think Wimberly projected to be much more than a bench player with a poor glove.

Possibly
Taveras is as good as gone, and Dex is a high end production guy who will probably steal a lot of bases early and emerge into more of a power hitter as he gets older. EY has really impressed, but going into last year, Wimberly was still more highly thought of than his speedy counterpart. Wimberly is just one of the best base stealers in any level of baseball. He may never star, but he will find a role on some team and help them out a bit. He’s not played a lot in the of which is where he will likely end up; if he turns into a decent defender there, he might work his way into some regular playing time. Whatever happens for him, I wish him well.
Sidenote: With all the drug testing, I wonder if speed might become a bigger part of the game again.
Rule 5
Rule 5 is great for a player like Wimberly. It may get him his chance, and his chances with the Rockies are not that great. Hopefully we keep him, but otherwise, I wish him luck.
Good Player
The reason many teams are interested in Wimberly is because he brings an added dimension to a ballclub. He is versatile and can run. Don’t forget, he led the Arizona Fall League in hitting two years ago. He will be a steal (no pun intended) for someone, and much like Chone Figgins I expect him to be a solid big leaguer.
Defense is a big difference between the two
Figgins was always considered a solid defender and came up as a shortstop in the minors. Wimberly has always had a questionable glove. Figgins also had already seen his MLB debut by this age, while Wimberly has barely shown that he’s ready for AAA. In short, I don’t know if it’s a great comparison, if Wimberly’s to be successful as an MLB player, it will be as a hybrid between Figgins and Juan Pierre, versatile, fast, able to beat out infield singles (hopefully he also keeps some of the patience and plate discipline he showed in 2008) but his opportunities will typically come because a team has a lack of better options, not because he brings that added dimension.
