Spring Training Game #24:

It's another game against the Cubs today, this one at home and televised. FSN and ESPN2 will cover the game, Gameday if you can't watch on either station or MLB.TV. Sean Marshall opposes Mark Redman today. Josh Towers and Ramon Ramirez will make appearances today. Jose Capellan should make his Spring Training debut today.

Wasn't Francis scheduled to start this game? Update [2008-3-21 17:8:7 by Russ]: Just pitching in a minor league game today.

Francis
He was scheduled to start - hopefully this doesn't mean he's injured. He's the anchor of our staff; we can't afford to lose him.

I'm sure FSN will give us the scoop in 20 minutes when the game starts anyways.

Oh no
I'm really worried about Francis not making the start. No, no, no....
Officially going to be watching our 2008 playoff run from the other side of the Atlantic!!!

Scoreless first for Redman
Took a good amount of pitches to get DeRosa out but it included a pickoff of Cedeno. It's just nice to see him toss a scoreless frame - a few more of those would look good today.

Nice double by Tulo.
Straightway center.

Tulo with a deep double
Off the big wall in center field - he continues to hit for power this spring.

RBI single for Todd!
And he advances to third as Daryle Ward lets the ball go right past him all the way to the wall.

Come on, we know Matt touched home plate.
I don't need to see that video again.

Double play!
That's a fast way to erase baserunners.

Redman started to walk
off the mound when he thought he had strike three. He should know better than to do that.

One good pickoff deserves another
apparently, as Tulo is picked off by Marshall.

Tulo thrown out
attempting to steal second. Hopefully that works out better in the future.

Hey
Squeaky's Baseball is Back sign from last season was just featured in a FSN commercial.  Is that new?

I didn't see it
I'm watching the ESPN broadcast just for a different perspective, but I know the Rockies filmed another pack of commercials for this season. Some of them played during Monday's commerical breaks but of course I missed those too.

Double play turned
But Ward runs into Redman who was covering first base and Redman went down.

Redman
Two DP balls for him so far, and he threw a Rob Blake-esque hip check on Daryl Ward (albeit inadvertently).

So nice to be able to watch the Rox for the first time this year (back in CO for spring break). And when the season starts, I'll see them again - I've got tickets to the second regular season game in St. Louis.

Atkins legs out a triple.

Atkins with a rare triple
to lead off the inning. Nice to see him show a little bit of power after a relatively quiet spring so far.

Francis update
This might have been mentioned already on FSN; I'm watching the ESPN coverage as I mentioned earlier.

Francis is working in a minor league game today. I'm very happy to hear nothing is wrong with him, though I'm disapointed he isn't going against more major league type hitters.

Barmes comes through
Scorched up the middle, but it hit the pitcher Marshall. Barmes was still able to leg it out after a richochet.

If everything goes smoothly
Purple Row will finally transition over to the V. 2.0 platform on Monday. You'll be able to experience how much better a game thread will be that day. If you haven't already done so, you can check out Athletics Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, Minor League Ball, Lone Star Ball, McCovey Chronicles, Viva El Birdos, or Halos Heaven to have some idea as to Purple Row's new look.

Solid five frames for Redman
It certainly helps his cause for one of the final rotation spots.

by avsfan4ever33 on Mar 21, 2008 3:21 PM MDT reply actions

Ground outs / fly outs
10-1 for Redman today.
Helps his cause even further.

Tulo scores on a wild pitch
After walking, stealing second, and going to third on a previous wild pitch.

3-1 good guys.

Hurdle in game interview coming up on ESPN
Probably won't hear anything we don't already know, but maybe he'll offer some insight on the back of the rotation battles, second base, or the fifth outfield jobs.

Corpas in
Gave up a couple of runs in his last outing; hoping for a scoreless frame here.

Those of you who watched ESPN
instead of FSN missed a remarkably amusing broadcast. "Angular velocity" had me giggling all afternoon.

Good game
I caught the end of the game only.

Great defensive plays at shortstop by Q there.  We all know that he can defend the position well but to actually see him get the reps and see with our own eyes how he makes the plays is a nice thing.

If Redman can pitch like that for any extended period of time it will go a long ways towards quieting our concerns about the bottom spots in the rotation.

Nice to see Ian Stewart hammer a ball back up the middle off of another lefty.
