Spring Training Game #27

The Rockies play Milwaukee this afternoon. I think this is the Gameday link, but don't quote me on that.  The game's on MLB.TV and Gameday Audio, but I don't think there's local coverage in Denver today.

Actually its opening day...

For my son's t-ball team, sort of. It's his first day of practice. My other son should be having his first practice next week. Hopefully they both make the cut!

There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on Mar 24, 2008 1:30 PM MDT reply actions

My son got sent down to the minors...

After practice the coach talked to me and said he needed another year of seasoning in regular t-ball before he could play coach pitch. Oh well, he was pretty young for his team, and now him and his brother can play on the same team. Which will make it easier for me to attend practices and games.

There's only one Rocktober!!

Plus, it's said

that players can afford to repeat t-ball and still go on to successful years in kid pitch. That is, unless your t-ball league is affiliated with the YMCA. Their parks are quite hitter friendly and it makes it tough to discern which kids are coach pitch ready and which ones are just taking advantage of the spacious dimensions and outfielders that feel the need to chase down the baserunner when they field a ball.

Local coverage

The game is scheduled to be on FSN RM this afternoon.

Three-man booth today,

two being Brewers broadcasters.

Geez, only a week until Opening Day?

I keep thinking it can't be next week. Maybe it was the snow this morning.

by Tom (RFTN) on Mar 24, 2008 2:03 PM MDT reply actions

Odd

The Brewers apparently have Corey Hart in both right and left.

Wow

4 spot in the 1st inning.

Die-hard Rockies fan. On the bandwagon since 7/6/93. Not giving up my seat. EVER! rockiesfan4ever reffered you

by rockiesfan4ever on Mar 24, 2008 2:40 PM MDT reply actions

So, apparently there's not any Gameday Audio afterall. And so far Gameday is being less than informative.

How'd we get those 4 runs?

by holly96 on Mar 24, 2008 2:43 PM MDT reply actions

U-Ball looks really hittable today. I hope he can figure things out before the season starts.

Pitcher

walks the other pitcher to load the bases. How . . . fitting.

Oy

U-ball looks bad and Tulo FUMBLES a ground ball?! The world is ending. Doom. Doom.

by Silverblood on Mar 24, 2008 2:50 PM MDT reply actions

Jeez

U-ball really needs to kick it into a higher gear, it's a week until the season starts. Now is not the time to be working on pitches, it's time to have your stuff under control.

A suggestion for

New! Purple Row: do we have to preview everything before we have to post it? I'd prefer an Edit Post rather than a preview, which is irritating.

by Silverblood on Mar 24, 2008 3:06 PM MDT reply actions

Think before you comment . . .

or that's the thinking behind it. I don't think previewing a post will be taken out.

Jimenez slidestep

For someone who is watching the game...is Ubaldo still working on using a slidestep when he's pitching out the stretch? I hope that explains some of his struggles.

Formerly rockiesfan06 - but the world's most generic username just wasn't cutting it.

by SC Memphis Raines on Mar 24, 2008 3:14 PM MDT reply actions

I cannot wait until the regular season starts and I can actually follow a game. I hate not having audio, and Gameday is being even less informative than usual, even for a ST game. Bah.

by holly96 on Mar 24, 2008 3:17 PM MDT reply actions

This has not been U-ball's best outing...

thankfully it's only spring, let's get the kinks out now.

Ooph,

back-to-back RBI singles by Fielder and Braun.

"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence

by Russ Oates on Mar 24, 2008 3:35 PM MDT reply actions

So when

do we officially start worrying about the state of the rotation? Seeing as it seems like "Francis, Cook, and don't look."

by Silverblood on Mar 24, 2008 3:37 PM MDT reply actions

Wait a few weeks

Just remember, next Monday morning, our rotation will have an ERA of 0.00. I'd wait a couple times through the rotation before I sweat anything.

Jiminez got hit hard at Co Springs early last season -- he's a young guy who's still learning how to harness his stuff. I expect that, by June or so, we won't even remember what kind of spring he's had.

by BroJB on Mar 24, 2008 3:48 PM MDT up reply actions

2 weeks into the season

2 starts each or 2 rounds through the rotation....then we can panic.

Or...join me in panicking now.....But I'm a little knee jerk in my reactions

What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?

by Redhawk on Mar 24, 2008 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Phew! Inning over!

That was a long one, let's get some more runs here.

by AtkinsandTulofan on Mar 24, 2008 3:40 PM MDT reply actions

'Netta again!

How could the Rockies think of starting the year with out him?!

by AtkinsandTulofan on Mar 24, 2008 3:45 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah

He may be the story of the spring. If he steps up, takes the starting job and produces, our long-term outlook gets a whole lot better

by BroJB on Mar 24, 2008 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Unfortunately

We still have Torrealba on the books for more than he's worth (read: nothing).

Iannetta is better than Torrealba already, which is why I was pissed when the Mets took away their offer.

by rosenthal on Mar 24, 2008 3:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually

I've been worrying about the rotation for some time now. Aside from Francis and Cook, we're going to need to score some runs to win.

by rosenthal on Mar 24, 2008 3:47 PM MDT reply actions

Well, at least the Rockies got an

out on the play as well.

"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence

by Russ Oates on Mar 24, 2008 3:54 PM MDT reply actions

Strike 'em out, throw 'em out

Yet again, it'll be the story of the year as to how much time Iannetta does not get in favor of Torrealba.

by Silverblood on Mar 24, 2008 3:57 PM MDT reply actions

If he performs, he'll play

I expect Yorvit to get the bulk of the action when Jimenez and Morales are on the hill, but Ianetta, if he produces, will see much more time. Trust me, O'Dowd and Hurdle want this kid to step up and take that spot over and they'll give him every opportunity.

by BroJB on Mar 24, 2008 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions

In the minors,

Iannetta worked well with Jimenez and all the other spanish speaking pitchers. I don't think there's any communication problems during the game.

by 4thturn on Mar 24, 2008 4:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Not so much the communication thing....

Torrealba was pretty impressive in the way he handled the two young guys down the stretch last season, in terms of keeping them calm and focused. Until they're really settled in, I'd feel pretty good about him working with them for their starts.

by BroJB on Mar 24, 2008 4:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Auto refresh

Just experienced it for the first time with that post. It's an excellent feature!

Meanwhile, Iannetta continues to have a great game. I don't mind Yorvit at a good game caller and a mentor to the young Latin pitchers, but I hope Iannetta gets into the lineup more than once or twice a week.

Speaking of Braun

Has there been any banter between the two sets of announcers regarding the travesty that was the NL Rookie of the Year voting last year? I missed the first three innings and was curious.
