Spring Training Game #28

Franklin Morales faces the White Sox's Opening Day Starter, Mark Buehrle. We'll want a consistent Morales today. Consistently good, not consistently bad. His hopes of starting the season with the Rockies rest on this start, while his only other competition for the last spot in the rotation faces minor-league hitters on Wednesday.

FSN and MLB.TV have the game covered today. Gameday if you need to follow along that way.

Good start for Frankie

Looking good with the first four he faced...

Hope this keeps up

Frankie looks like he did in September.

by Hizilla on Mar 25, 2008 2:24 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

This is the upside...

When Frankie's on, he's phenomenal. This would be definitely nice to see twenty plus times a year.

The thing that I like

is that he's not using many pitches to get through these innings. It would be nice if he got some confidence back before pitching the biggest Opening Day in club history.

At work today

So I can't watch on TV. :( Interesting lineup today with Torre in the five hole. All regulars except for Atkins.

Is the Helton/Holliday batting order switch pretty set for the season?

by Squeaky on Mar 25, 2008 2:28 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Seems like Hurdle's leaning strongly that way...

I'd be surprised at this point if it's different from this on day one.

Is FSN rebroadcasting this at 7pm?

Following Gameday, and would love to see Morales actually pitching up to raw skills...

Looking more like Morales #4, Redman #5.

When Hirsh comes back, cut Wells, eat the $$$, and put Redman in the 'pen.

Me thinks Wells will be here all year

I'd be shocked at this point if we were to cut the Kipper... Our chance was Monday when he was sent to the pen, but $3.1M is more than just pocket change. I'm hoping he excels in the pen and garners us some more good arms in the way of prospects.

From the box score...

Morales looks good. Another solid inning.

by Squeaky on Mar 25, 2008 2:38 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather keep redman

I was watching from the first base stands friday when Redman was run over at first base, he got up and shook it off...... though Wells did pitch pretty good sunday, and he was effective

Morales and Buehrle

matching each other quite well, if the box score means anything.

White Sox crew

Okay, I hate that the White Sox radio crew does these call-in segments during the game (I think it's just for ST). I can hear things happening in the background and they don't even tell you what's going on. They told me after the fact that Helton drilled one, but what does that mean? Was it a homerun? Was it a long out? Help?

by holly96 on Mar 25, 2008 2:57 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Okay, apparently he was on base (nice of them to let me know), because he just got driven home for a run.

Strange scoring decision?

From Gameday:

Dye is hit by a batted ball from Pierzynski, and is called out. It's also the third out of the inning. Why is Pierzynski credited with a base hit -- what's the rule on this?

Seems to me the baserunner would be out via runner interference, and the batter would have to be credited either with no at bat, or perhaps a fielder's choice?

Admittedly not logical...

But that's always been the rule...a batted ball hitting a runner is a hit. Rule 10.05 (e)

Thanks for clarifying

Rules, schmules.

You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball.

Buncha lollygaggers. :-)

Bah

Two runners on, a two-base error by Brad, and Sox lead 2-1. Please Frankie, do not come apart.

Walk to Buerhle

double to Ramirez. 3-1 Sox, 2nd and 3rd, still no outs. Argh.

by Silverblood on Mar 25, 2008 3:10 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Currently

4-1 after the Konerko sac fly. 2 outs, full count.

So...

...was it bad pitching by Frankie? Bad defense? Combination of both? Anyone watching on TV, please fill me in.

Frankie looked a little rattled

Hawpe didn't help him out with an error that allowed both runners on to score, but Frankie did battle back from 3-1 to strike out Dye.

by Silverblood on Mar 25, 2008 3:22 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

4-1, Middle 5th

Morales came back from 3-1 to strike the guy out.

Spilly

ricochets one off the wall after a pretty weak strikeout by Stewart. 1 out, Spilly on second, and Willy T up.

Willy T K's

and Tulo hits a soft hopper to Crede. Inning over.

by Silverblood on Mar 25, 2008 3:24 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh...

Crap call. Shallow shallow pop fly, Crede runs on Hawpe, Hawpe's throw arrives there in plenty of time, but the ump says Torrealba didn't tag him. It's 5-1 Sox, and the umps have been really squeezing Rockies pitchers all game.

After the first four innings

I was optimistic that Frankie would lock his rotation spot up today. Now, I'm not so sure...

I think...

the Rox pitching is going to give me a wicked case of heartburn this year. I REALLY hope things improve when opening day rolls around, because the pitching on the whole has been just terrible, or injured, this spring.

Capellan

is looking decent out there, at least...

by Silverblood on Mar 25, 2008 3:51 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

did anything noteworthy...

happen in the eighth for the Rox? The box score is quite stuck.

by Squeaky on Mar 25, 2008 4:25 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

never mind

it just updated. Apparently not.

Bucky

giving up 3 hits this inning, bases loaded with only one out. Two of them were soft, one was sharper, but still. Bad Bucky.

by Silverblood on Mar 25, 2008 4:30 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

He gets out of it

K and easy popout, going to the bottom of the ninth still 5-2.
