The Ultimate Rockies Playlist

Sitting here in my NL champs T-shirt, watching the Rox take on the White Sox, a week or so before the regular season starts, slavering for baseball. This is my first diary -- er, excuse me, FanPost -- on the new Purple Row, so hopefully I have everything figured out. I was looking at my recently enhanced iTunes Rockies playlist, and decided I could both share my favorite songs as pertaining to the purple and ask about yours. So, what songs give you the best memories of our boys? Here's mine.

Star-divide

1. Call to Arms, Angels and Airwaves. (This is a good all-purpose opening song, getting the troops to rally for battle. Our purple boys will rise up and ambush the rest of the NL).

2. Welcome to the Black Parade, My Chemical Romance (This was played at Opening Day at Coors last year, and is generally good for the Rockies anyway. They ARE the Black Parade).

3. This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race, Fall Out Boy (They played this song at Coors before the start of every game, or at least the ones I went to. Happy memories here).

4. The Sweet Escape, Gwen Stefani (Everybody knows that our darling Spilly has, um, an odd sense of humor, and anybody who's been to a game recently knows the whole stadium sings the "Wee-oo!" part at least one time after it's over).

5. Rock Star, Nickelback (This was Brad's walk-up song last year, which seems particularly unsuited to our sweet little Brandon. Still, it's amusing).

6. What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong (They played this song while Squeaky and I were lying on the Coors Field outfield barefoot on July 4th, watching fireworks after the Rockies had just absolutely schooled the Mets 17-7. This brings back memories of one of the happiest nights of my life).

8. Crank That (Rockies Remix), Tyler Ward. (This is a remix of the Crank That Soulja Boy song, but it's done quite well and makes me grin whenever I hear it. Weirdly catchy).

9. Perfect Situation, Weezer ("There's the pitch... Slow and straight... All I have to do is swing and I'm a hero..." Seems to me to be the story of a baseball player's life).

10. Rockies Are A Girl's Best Friend, The Garlands (This is the most awesome cover of "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" you will ever hear. "Matt Holliday is glad to die for runs... against the Padres in a duel..." It gets better from there).

11. Count Your Last Blessings, Sum 41(Squeaky and I listened to this song all the time coming up from games. Great rocker. The Dodgers feel this way whenever they see the Rockies).

12. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen (They played this song on July 7th, Rockies vs. Phillies, while Squeaky and I patiently sat through a 1 hour+ rain delay. There is nothing quite like singing "Galileo, Galileo, Galileo figaro!" at the top of your lungs, in the third deck. In the rain. Waiting for the actual game. Which the Rockies won).

13. Holiday, Green Day (For our beloved Man-beast Mattie).

14. Load Up The Bases (The Baseball Song), Whiskey Falls. (They play this song at the end of 21 Days, which it itself makes me like it. Make sure you get the Rockies version from iTunes, not the evil Red Sox version).

15. For You, Staind (This is Fuentes's song. It is awesome. He should try to be as awesome as his song).

16. I've Got All This Ringing In My Ears But None In My Fingers, Fall Out Boy (This song has the most insanely catchy opener ever. Yet again, a favorite of Squeaky and I. We'd come out of Coors after another Rockies win and blast this one on the way home).

17. We Love The Rockies, Alice 105.9 (From the guys at Alice, set to the tune of "We Will Rock You" by Queen, starts with the call from Jamey Carroll's AB in the tiebreaker and Matt's legendary slide).

18. Rocktober, Thomas Tha Franchise (My favorite rap song ever. It's great. Tells the story of Rocktober in rhyme, and is also incredibly catchy).

So, what about you? What songs remind you of our boys? What are your favorites? Any more suggestions?

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

To get any of the songs that I linked to

Just open them up (you'll see a QuickTime player bar) and click "Save Page As." It'll save the songs as an MP3 file, and then you can open them in iTunes or Real Player or whatever else you use.

"Let The Good Times Roll"

The one by the Cars, not B.B. King.

And despite the lyrics being completely inappropriate (or maybe not, depending on how you interpret the lyrics), "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley or the Ataris, you can't go wrong with either version.

"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence

An excellent list

Though it is, if I may, a bit modern-heavy. Then again, I suppose I'm just too darned old for my age in the first place :) I agree with Russ that "The Boys of Summer" needs to be included; I have a bit of a connection with it, since when I'm in Boulder I listen to 99.5 nearly religiously, and driving home after watching Game 3 of the NLCS, they made sure to play it right away. I'd also throw up the good-ole "Rocky Mountain Way", by Joe Walsh. It used to be a staple at Coors, played after every Rockies victory - I was kinda disappointed when it got replaced a couple of years ago (about the same time they started Gen-R). But I still can't listen to the song without being transported back to Coors circa 2002 :) . The only other one I can think of right now that I associate with the boys in Purple is "September" by Earth, Wind, and Fire. When my friends and I went to a Padres/Rockies game last year, that was one of the choices on the Rockies DJ thing. It made me realize that we do, actually, have true baseball fans in Colorado, as it was the overwhelming favorite; everyone knew what it meant to be seeing the Rockies playing meaningful baseball in September. I'm sure I have more songs to list here, just can't think of them right away...

Some more thoughts...

So I'm new to the whole blog thing, so go easy on me if I'm doing it wrong... :)

I have some songs on my list that remind me of Rocktober, and some that remind me of "back in the day"… I was in junior high school when the Rox first came to town and was hooked on them from Day One; the best memories I have with my family come from summers spent in purple and black. It's fun to put together lists like this because it brings back so many fond memories.

I left off the walkup songs from 2007 since I’m sure the purple faithful already know them… but I did include some old ones.

This Is How We Do It- Montel Jordan
-EY’s walkup song

El Matador- Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
-Vinny’s walkup song

Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
- Will always remind me of Alan Roach booming, "DANT-AAAAAYY Bichette!"

Nostalgia- Yanni
- Does anyone besides me remember the AWESOME montage that played with this song? I think it was '95 and maybe '96 too… They would play it (if they timed it right) right before the Rockies took the field as the song ended in fireworks and applause. The song is from Yanni’s "Live at the Acropolis", but the 30-second clip on iTunes doesn’t do it justice. Either download the whole song and listen starting at 1:44… that and the ending 1:15 were used in the montage… or to get a better preview, listen to the version from "Yanni Live!" and it will give you a better idea of the melody. Picture a highlight reel montage full of home runs, amazing catches, strikeouts, Dante Bichette fist-pumping…. Ahhh. Memories.

Play Me Some Mountain Music- Alabama
-They used to play this after "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in the early years

We Got It Going On- Bon Jovi
-Played before the tiebreaker— it was so much fun to watch the energy at Coors that night, with a packed house standing and clapping before the game started.

We're Not Gonna Take It- Twisted Sister
-They played this at the beginning of the bottom of the 13th after Hairston hit the home run. My entire section was singing it with the collective attitude of "DAMN STRAIGHT WE'RE NOT!!"

Let's Go Crazy- Prince & The Revolution
- They played this after the tiebreaker game. After so many hours of rejoicing and stressing and screaming, it was truly appropriate!

Kernkraft 400 (Sport Chant Stadium Remix)- Zombie Nation
- Soundtrack to all the victory celebrations!

Dancing In The Dark- Bruce Springsteen
- Played while the lights were out during the NLDS Game 3… what incredible atmosphere that whole game provided.

This thread is fun! Thanks for posting those Rox-personalized songs from denverchannel.com, too-- those were great!

Don't Stop Believing-Journey
-A favorite song of many rockies fans at the end of the year and Clint Barmes' song last year.

Thank God I'm a Country Boy-John Denver
-Often played between innings at Coors

Rocky Mountain High-John Denver
-Not played at Coors, but many think it should be.

Hey Baby (If You'll Be My Girl)-Dj Otzi
-played after take me out to the ballgame (7th inning stretch) at Coors

Streetcorner Symphony- Rob Thomas
-played while Rockies are warming up before the games

Big Things Poppin- T.I.
-Seth Smith's song last year

I like the way you move-Outkast

I am enjoying this thread too!

"A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."
~Vince Lombardi

One more...

Culo-Pitbull (Just change the first letter...)

I remember this being played after some of Tulo's big hits last year, with the crowd drowning out the music and yelling "TULO!!!"

Every day is a Holliday!
