Spring Training Game #29
The Rockies get to face Arizona again today, and as is the usual with the Snakes in Spring, we start an actual MLB pitcher in Jeff Francis and they start some random fan that came to the park early. Okay, so Hector Ambriz isn't quite that an unknown, but you can definitely tell they're continuing to try and hide their actual starters from us and our fellow NL West rivals as best they can before the season. Given how shaky their starters have looked late this Spring, that might not be such a bad idea.
I know the game's got MLB.TV coverage, but I haven't had the chance to find out if there's anything besides that.

CHIEFS???
Did Tom Helmer just say Ramon Ramirez was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs????
Man, I'm glad FSN covers the Rockies the way they do, but the on air talent leaves a LOT to be desired.

Hatred
Is it too early to hate Vizcaino and Wells?
I already hate Wells
both for his putrid pitching and his whining as if he was somehow entitled to a starting spot when he was epically awful as a starter last year. And Vizcaino has very little break on his pitches today -- they're either knee-high and straight, or high and outside. So no, not too early.
Bad Outing
Vizcaino, looked terrible in that inning. We were up 4 runs...now we're down 1. At least Mark Grace makes me laugh.
'Cause my better's better then your better-Matt Holliday
Vizcaino
I'm not in charge or anything, but I have a feeling Vizcaino might be headed to the DL to start the season. He had those couple of weeks where he didn't pitch due to injury/personal reasons, and he's clearly not ready, mechanically or stuff-wise, for big league action. If they can find something wrong with him - or make something up, whatever - they ought to send him to the Springs until he figures it out. That then gives the Rox a chance to hang on to Capellan, who's pitched well this spring but is out of options, for the first couple of weeks and potentially audition him for a trade.
And to answer the above question - I mean, far be it for me to determine your fan experience, but it's March 26, for Christ's sake. We've played exactly zero meaningful games. Think we might want to gear back on hating anybody until we give them a chance to make an impact in the regular season? Like I said, it's hard to judge Vizcaino because that injury is clearly affecting him (his arm angle is flattening everything out, as you heard Grace explain if you were watching the game). And as for Wells, this is his second year back from TJ surgery - it takes most pitchers until then to find their stuff. Plus, the guy was alright out of the bullpen for the Cards last year, with a K per inning.
Some hate can be healthy. Hating the Diamondbacks is certainly healthy. But - and again, this is just me - I'd like to see some of the real season play out before I start ragging the good guys.

Bias
I didn't like the signing of either player in question so this isn't a reaction to a spring performance but more a matter of having my face rubbed in the money they spent on them.
That said, I expect Vizcaino to be useful if healthy. I just don't like him as a (relatively) highly paid 8th inning guy.
Redman
apparently gave up 7 runs in 5 innings. To our Double-A team.
Hell, promote Reynolds already, he can't be a whole lot worse.... [joking. Sort of]
Ramirez
Guess I'll have to withhold final judgement pending the PTBNL, but I really hate letting a good, cheap young arm like that go. Especially since Kip Wells is taking up a slot in the pen that Ramirez could have filled.
And, if Vizcaiano really isn't ready, RR could have been pretty handy.
Ah well, a Nat'l Championship banner equals benefit of the doubt as far as O'Dowd goes, so perhaps he knows best on this one. We'll see.....
We'll see in time, but
I tend to think that Ramirez will prove to be of the fungible reliever variety. A guy nice to have, but one destined for a career of middle relief and alternating good/bad seasons. His career outlook, to me, doesn't seem a great deal different than those of Clarke, Speier, Newman, Capellan...and all those guys are already in the system. That's not to mention superior players like Morillo, Weathers, and Strop are close to breaking into the bullpen.
Well that's a net gain if true
I'll take the upside of De La Rosa over that of Ramirez. Power lefty that can fill several roles...pretty good swap if true.
Fernando Seguignol
Anybody catch this guy in today's game? Huge dude who played for the Expos some years back and then wento to Japan and put up some big numbers there. Rox signed him to, I guess, back up Koshansky at Co Springs.
Probably the largest guy I've ever seen in a Rockies uniform. I'm guessing 6-7 and 250. Stood next to Gallego and Gags barely reached his chest.
He was fun to watch -- went 2-2, made a nice athletic play at first and ran the bases pretty well. Switch hitter, too.
We'll probably never see him at Coors, but it would be fun to have a monster like that on the bench for late inning pinch hitting duty.
i was at the game too.
i though he was some young kid getting his first and only chance with the big club, he was fun to watch. very passionate and emotional. he was huge. honestly he was the highlight today cause he was so fun to watch.
hop on the rockies roller coaster
