Spring Game #31: A Visit to Chase Field
I believe Micah Bowie's starting this one. Doug Davis slithers to the mound for the D'Backs.
Let's wish Davis well as he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Go Rockies!

Definitely good thoughts for Davis
I've always sort of liked him despite the fact that he's very sloooow pitching-wise, and I certainly don't wish cancer on anyone. Get better, Doug! (But give up plenty of runs to the Rox tonight).
Gameday link?
Thanks for reminding me
about the Gameday link. It's up there now.

Just fixed the Gameday link.
They've finally gone to the '08 version.

Uh, apparently
Eric Byrnes took Kirk Gibson for a pedicure. Find out Monday what went down on FSN Arizona! Thank you, but I'd rather not.

New Gameday again?
Why must they change it every year? I get comfortable with the old one. When I have to watch the first month and a half of the season on it, I like to know the deal. But whatever, I'm sure I'll adjust.
Wow
I thought your first post said "I wish Doug Davis had Thyroid Cancer" then I saw the link on Gameday and was like WTF?
Hope he is well
Die-hard Rockies fan. On the bandwagon since 7/6/93. Not giving up my seat. EVER! rockiesfan4ever reffered you

Maybe
now that we have the New!Shiny! version of Gameday, we will get updates more often than every inning (or two). That would be nice.
Double the other way for Helton.
Announcer's debating whether Todd's a Hall of Famer.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
That was
a close play at second, and a bit dangerous with the head-first slide.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Best wishes
to Davis and the D'backs community...
On a lighter note, I totally love the new Gameday. Everything just looks a lot nicer than previous years, while keeping most of the bells and whistles. I rather enjoyed watching Byrnes get K'ed swinging just now.
Byrnes K's.
Plenty more of those to come against the Rockies.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Wow
Lineup. Not rotation. Lineup. I was just rather happy at the time, and words came out, and...yeah, I'll just go back to Gameday.
I think we'll see
a new pitcher every inning for the Rockies.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Holy crud
I went to finish dinner and miss NIX jacking one out to make it three in a row? I like this lineup, I likes, I likes.
Willy T? Now, not so much.
Davis
is throwing BP.

Well, well, well.
Holliday with a shot past the outfield wall.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
And certainly
he has my prayers (and I'm sure the rest of the Row's), but not when he's pitching against us.

Drew shouldn't have cut off that ball.
Upton would have had the assist on Atkins being out at third. Mark Reynolds was upset.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Nix walks
Bases loaded. There will probably be a PH for Herges here. (Gameday still thinks it's Bowie).
And the big man
comes through. Infield single scores Atkins, and Willy T is up. Please try not to K looking.
Not a good outing for Davis,
but he has much greater things to worry about. All the best to you, Doug.
Time to feast on another pitcher (hopefully).
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Wow
Now I come back and we're up 8-0! Heck of a bad streak for Davis...I think it's that soul patch he has on. Whenever I looked at his mugshot, I thought it was a bug on my screen. Regardless, more good wishes for him and his recovery.
Ah, Tulo
Everyone else is getting hits, but since you've had 3 ABs and it's the third, I'm sure you'll have more chances.
Why Pitch Davis?
The young man has bigger fish to tackle and why disrupt his confidence by getting his head handed to him by the Rocks pounders.
I think this was a dumb move by Melvin. However, the purple are making a statement.

Speaking of old
I just visited the Snakepit to see their reaction to the game so far, and much to my surprise, they have yet to receive the shiny SBN 2.0 treatment. Granted, I instantly knew where everything was, but it definitely threw me for a loop.
Helton
hit every ball at every at bat like a bullet when I was in Tucson. Even on the back fields he was mashing.
I predict .340, 100 RBI's, 44 doubles and 100 RS, 20 HRs

Holliday
Second dinger of the game! He's ready for the season. And Dbacks Nation has to be just a little nervous about Lyon closing...
Snyder still hitting like a fiend
Fuentes still as wobbly as a top. I wish I could trust him the way I once used to, but I fear those days are long gone.
Are you going to trust
Ramon Ramirez to implode for the Royals?
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Zoyyy
Burke continues to torch it, 2-run single. 3 runs in, 9-4 lead now. Fuentes, can you please pretend that you are still good? Thankee kindly.
Yep,
that's Matt Daley who comes from my neck of the woods, Queens, NY.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
So what's up with
playing all these exhibition games at teams' home fields that don't count just before the season starts? Another Bud Selig bright idea?
More than likely
I wish that we'd have skipped this one against the D'backs, and gotten to do our traditional Rox/Sox game in the Springs.
All the subs are now in
And.... Daley, please try to get them out, even if only in interest of expediting the game.
ESPN Radio
I just randomly discovered that I have an ESPN PPV channel on my tv, and since I haven't paid for anything, it's playing ESPN Radio. Anyway, Gamenight is previewing the Rockies right now with guest Drew Goodman (that is his name, right?). Talking about the offense right now and how they're going to score a ton of runs. Goodman just called Tulo a freak.
Well, all the best
baseball players are some sort of freak. Or alien. The great ones are all aliens.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
True
Very true.
Now they're talking about how excited Denver is for the Rockies this season. Very true. I know I'm more excited for the season than I've ever been, and I've always been excited about baseball starting up again.
Now
It'll be up to the guys not to blow it. We've won them back, but they're not going to stay forever if we go back to our climes of suckitude.
Meanwhile, in an alternate universe.....
I'm watching "Home Team Classics" on FSN. Just caught the Helton bomb vs. Saito game. Now it's the final game of the regular season against the D-backs.
Watching it, it's so nice to be reminded exactly how filthy Jiminez is, and how big he came up in a high pressure situation. Just watching this kid pitch that ballgame makes me forget any problems he had this spring. Good god he has crazy nasty stuff. He'll be just fine before the season's too old.
BTW -- it looks like they won't have the play-in game on Home Team Classics. Dang it -- I was at the game and I never actually saw the TV coverage. I'd love to have a copy of that game stored on my DVR. Ah well, I'll just have to replay it in my head. And those are some memories that aren't going anywhere for the rest of my life, I can tell you.
FSN
is showing it tomorrow, starting at 9, in its entirety. Followed by the NLDS winner and the Pennant clincher. Clear out some space on the DVR...
Oh baby.
I'm knocking off a bunch of "Human Weapons" to make room on the DVR. Great show, but the play-in game's gotta have plenty of room!
It's available
on iTunes, or at least it was. That's where I got it. Took me frigging forever to download, but so worth it.
I have the entire
play-in game on my iTunes. If I'm up tomorrow (tomorrow being Saturday, ergo I will probably be sleeping in, and I have a lot of errands to run before I go back to NY on Sunday) I'll definitely be checking in anyway. Never, ever, ever gets old.
Man, what memories that game provided
When I was a kid back in NY, I was at Yankee Stadium in 1976 when Chambliss hit the home run against KC to put the Yanks in the World Series. I ran around the field, ripped up some grass from right field and shook Steinbrenner's hand. I never thought I'd have a better experience at a sporting event.
That play-in game was better. The highs and lows, the unbelievable drama. And then, when it ended, standing in the pavillion high fiving strangers with fireworks exploding right over my head.
I can't wait to relive it tomorrow.
I hate you and my sister
She was there.. ARGH, I cannot say how jealous I was. I was in New York, watching on TV in an attic room with my Orioles fan friend. Stayed there until the Hairston homer, felt like I was going to die, but ran back just in time to catch the end. (I'd turned on Gameday, of course). I sprinted back up the stairs in time to see a mosh pit on TV, and I knew what had happened.
I FREAKED OUT. I screamed at the top of my lungs, I flung myself on my friend, I hopped up and down, and I had people coming up to see if I was all right. It was amazing.
The absolute
roar of the Coors crowd when Carroll hits his sac fly gives me chills every time I hear it. The only time I can say with all certainty that I have heard a crowd "roar". Wish I could've been there. But still, hearing my baseball friend tell me, "Dude, a sac fly does it..." was still awesome in its own right.
Funny
Just as you said that, I was listening to the call for the game-winning sac fly all over again.
The HR
Thankfully, I didn't see the home run in the top of the 13th. I was standing on line at a concession stand getting my wife some coffee when Julio came in. I remember saying to the guy next to me "we're toast". Julio caughed up the yakker the next pitch.
I'll actually always have a kind spot in my heart for Ramon Ortiz who came in cleaned up Julio's mess, giving the Rox a shot in the bottom of the 13th.
Okay that's it
I need to go watch it now. The 13th inning, that is. That.... oh my God. It was... AMAZING. Yes, I get incoherent with how much I loved (and do love) my team.
And I want to say
That I did get to see Holliday's triple. The noise Coors makes when he lights into that ball gives me CHILLS. The memory is giving me goosebumps right now, I may need to go watch it.
Fernando Seguignol trivia!
Since we may never see the big man in a Rockies uniform after tonight, guess it's now or never for Fernando Seguignol fun facts:
He holds the Japanese League record for most home runs ina season by a switch hitter (44).
And that, my friends, is pretty much the sum of my knowledge about Fernando Seguignol.
OOH hehe YAY
Here we go. watching the 13th inning of the play-in game. Headphones in, Trevor Hoffman just entered the game, I am watching with delight, volume cranked. Chills. CHILLS.
Matsui
just doubled. Tulo coming up. I am in heaven. You are welcome to spring training.

13th
Let us know how it turns out. I mean, it's Trevor Hoffman. The Rox can't possibly come back against him, can they?
Funny
I know how it turns out and I'm shaking and having chills all over.

Game 162
Corpas just threw Drew out at 1st to end it. Honest to god, I was actually nervous watching it.
What an absurd treasure of trove of riches that pennat run gave us. Really, there's enough good stuff that happened there to fuel a Rockies fan for years.
Of course, new memories will always be welcomed.
Here's an idea
To give extra authenticity, We should invite some Padres fans in here right now so they can whine about Holliday not touching the plate.
Or not. :)
Tulo's RBI # 99
and Holliday's RBI #137 were my favorites.

And I still insanely hate
everyone who got to be there. My sister was there. She tells me it was completely unbelievable. She doesn't need to tell me.
by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:10 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah
It was all that, but there'll be more big games at Coors.
Really, the best thing about it for me was getting to bring my 12 year old son to the game. Last year turned him into a hardcore baseball fan, and that game will stick with him the way the Chambliss game has stayed with me all these years.
A whole lot of young lifetime Rockies fans were made during the last month of 2007.
You're a charming young lady
but the trade of your hate for being at that game is TOTALLY worth it. ;)

Another Row game
We'll have to have one sometime that you'll be back in the states.

I'm here all summer
I don't leave for Oxford until late September, so I'm sure we can arrange one.

We'll just make sure
I sit between the pretty girls again. ;)
Anyway, I'm off to bed.
Good game, good memories, and next time we play it's for real.

And for what it's worth
The exhibition is in the books. 12-4, and get ready for the PAIN, Snakeys.
But I'd rather talk about the tiebreaker anyway. I need my games to count again.
