Fantasy Baseball

I was thinking that it might be fun to start a PR fantasy league over at yahoo.

Star-divide

There are a number of questions that we'd need to figure out if we want to do this.
Please let me know your preferences
Roto or head to head?
Stat categories?
league size?
AVG or OBP?
Roster size?

post your preferences.  I think this would be a fun way to do this since we know everyone would be active.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Draft Software
and if you want to dominate your Purple Row league, I suggest you try out my free Fantasy Baseball Draft Software.  It works both as a drafting tool and a mock draft tool.  It's better than any of the pay stuff out there imho.

I like roto
with fewer categories, but very involved owners.

by moomacher on Mar 4, 2008 10:18 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Roto
I've played H2H in the past but I'm really wanting to try Roto.  So would you be in if we started a league?

by Blake20th on Mar 4, 2008 10:26 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I'd be down for sure

by moomacher on Mar 4, 2008 10:40 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd go with
a roto league, standard roster (C,1B,2B,3B,SS,3 OF, Util, 2 SP, 2 RP, 3 P), 5x5 stat categories with AVG replaced by OPS.

Perfect
This is the ideal fantasy set up, in my opinion. I would join in a heartbeat.

I'd be willing to give a fantasy team a try
Keep in mind you'd be dealing with a relative newbie to the game, but I'd give it a solid effort.

Max Teams:
Somewhere between 15 and 20?

I'm a Fantasy Vet
Roto:  Bad part is they aren't head to head, come the All-star break the league is usually done, as it's hard to make up enough points/stats.

Head to Head is fun.  You can have a bad week, you get to make up the next week.

Max teams depends on how many positions you have.  Most leagues get WAY too thin after 12 players/teams, but if done correctly you get 14 teams some time.  Here's why: you have 30 big league teams.  If you have a starter and a back up for each position say 1b you've used up 28 of the 30...have a few injuries and you can't fill the position

Here's my stats and positions I use for 10 players.  Stats have been worked out over several years.  I also play on Yahoo.

Roster Positions:       C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, Util, Util, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL, DL

Stat Categories:     R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, HBP, K, FPCT, AVG, W, L, CG, SV, HR, BB, K, GIDP, TB, ERA, WHIP

Scoring stats: Need to have positive and negative stats, and be balanced.  A "positive stat" is one where the more you play, the more you get, say "Wins" for a pitcher,  A "Negative stat" is one where you lose if you get a lot of...like "loses" for a pitcher. You want this balance so a player doesn't just quit or sit on say 3 stud pitchers.

Hope this helps.  I'll have to pass on playing as I'm in 2 leagues, and that's more then I like to do.  However, one is going to be a live off line draft in a bar/restaurant and we may need a few more people. There will be a cash buy in..and cash for wining 1st, 2nd, 3rd.  Since the draft will be in Denver (somewhere..not sure where, or when yet) we need locals.  The league commissioner is a friend of mine and is a Jeffco Deputy Sheriff so everything is very above board. Let me know if you are interested.

I will
I'm trying to nail down a draft time and location.  Right now we are looking at Thursday the 20th. there is a sports bar on Arapahoe, just east of I-25 we are looking at, and Jacksons sport bar, down town across from Coors Field

Roto vs H2H
Roto is better.  But H2H tends to keep people's interest longer since there are usually playoffs.  In Roto the best team usually wins, in H2H there is more of a "crap shoot" to the contest, thus the higher interest for the teams not in first place.

I'll play
I like H2H better, but would still be fine with Roto. The more teams the better.

I'll throw my hat in the ring
But would vote for a simplified league.  No way I'm playing if there are 20 categories as suggested earlier.  Way too much brain damage there (in my opinion).

I'm in a league with 29 categories
It's a little nuts.

Fantasy baseball is both really difficult and really easy.  My biggest piece of advice is don't be afraid to make moves.

I'm definitely in.
This would be fun.  I'd prefer Yahoo since I already have an account and a couple leagues there, but anywhere is fine.  And H2H is way more fun than roto in my opinion.

I'd be in
With this in mind, this is something that we'd really have to try to limit to 12 teams tops.  Any more and it's just a complete dilution of talent.

Another idea if you get lots of players
there are ways to do a league if you have several players/teams. (more than 12)

Limit your bench positions in h2h If you do this you need to limit your add/drops and/or have a long waiver time of 5 days.  Why 5 days? this keeps players from having a pitcher pitch, then dropping them, only to pick them back up before they pitch again, thus using the Free Agent pool as their own bench. I recommend doing this anyway

Use a salary type system.  Everyone can get Matt Holliday if you want to spend $25 out of your allocated $150 cap. (money is not real)  Lots of Roto leagues use this type of system.  This is fun, cause if forces Managers to take lesser players, and make interesting choices on filling out a roster.

Here's the plan
There seems to be no consensus on H2H vs. Roto.

I'm looking at a free Yahoo league (individuals can upgrade if they like) of 12 teams.

Stat Categories: R, HR, RBI, SB, OPS,
W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

Positions
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL

This is the basic yahoo set up with OPS instead of AVG.

If we go with H2H we don't need to worry about innings limitations: however if we don't we will cap it at 1250.

So far here is who I have playing:
Russ
Myself
moomacher
MattTheRock
jrockies
jcd823
rockiesfan4ever
Roberbola
free7694
Roxgirl

Trades will be voted on to go through.
No max roster moves.
Standard Yahoo players that cannot be waived.
5 Day waiver period to prevent dropping and re-signing of SPs.
Live online draft on Saturday March 22 at 7:00 Mountain.
If you are not available at that time your team can be auto drafted.  If there are a large number of players that will not be available, please let me know so that we can work it around to get the most people participating.
Roster updates will be daily. Most people here are on the internet everyday it seems.

Any questions or concerns let me know.  I'd like to have this thing in motion by Friday.

We do need 2 more players so the first two interested let me know.

I think we will post the current standing in a diary each week so that those interested will be able to see what's going on if that's ok with Russ and Roxgirl.

Sounds good
I think I voted for roto, but I'm absolutely fine with H2H. although I do like idea of limiting bench spots so people can't just sit on players.

by moomacher on Mar 5, 2008 10:30 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm on an airplane at that time
Can we make it any later?

If not I'll be fine with an autodrafted team.

Team Names
Do you guys think our team names should be our screen names on PR or that we should make our own names, I think if we use our screen names it will be a lot easier to know who we are talking to.
Is everyone ok with that?

Perhaps
incorporate your screen name into your team name?

one request
can we still keep this a baseball site?  i have absoulty no problems with a league. but friends in the past get really annoying when talking about there teams.

such as o i hope cook gets shelled tonite cause im playing rox girl and she has him on her team.

quite frankly i dont wanna hear about how good or bad your team is. a comment hear and there is fine but not always.

i come here to see how other true rockies fans are feeling about the team and hear ideas about the team and to learn more about baseball not to hear about everyones ones team. i know everyone will be cool with it but just putting it out there.

last thing i am in if you only have 10. id be happy to play with 10

At least the broncos dont totally suck

Good Point
There is a place to talk fantasy on the site so we should be fine "talking smack" there. It will be fun.

I don't want this to spill over into the Row.  Right now we have 12.  If anyone drops out or can't play I'll let you know, but as of right now we are ok.

I agree
it makes some place like the row look like too closed of a crowd.  Comments are too clicky and limited.

Here's a fantasy tip for you guys: Johan Santana is good.

Feel free to send me money for that bit of advice!
