Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Do Over

Okay, remember how this morning in regards to the bottom of our lineup how I said it would be important to monitor whether luck swings our way early or not? Well, today we saw an excellent case in point of luck swinging our way, even if it had nothing to do with the bottom of our lineup. When today's game was suspended in the bottom of the third inning with the Cardinals already ahead 5-1, they had an 89% chance of winning according to Fangraphs. While they might be favored tomorrow against Kip Wells, their chances of winning will certainly be lower than the nine to one odds we left them with today. The rain essentially came up with a grand slam for us, erasing a four run deficit so Holliday, Tulo and company didn't have to. Let's hope the first three innings of tomorrow night tell a different story.

Both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks looked solid this afternoon, the Rockies will need to do better at showing they belong in the same picture as we repeat Day One tomorrow.

Quick

Somebody fetch Matsui from the Astros and ask him what pitch Lohse threw to him in the NLDS -- the one he golfed out of the Bank for a grand slam . Then, use Tulo's amazing mind-control skills to dupe Lohse into throwing that pitch every single time.

It's a foolproof plan.

We can't tell how well

the Dodgers did today against Major League competition. They were playing the Giants, after all.

by Silverblood on Mar 31, 2008 6:38 PM MDT reply actions

True that,

I watched most of that game while ours was in rain delay, the Giants indeed look as bad as advertised.

Giants

I'm hoping their attendance drops, thereby making my commute on game days much easier. Because I don't care about the Giants at all, and I'm selfish like that.

Brad Penny's "Hit"

I especially liked the popup that Ray Durham dropped, but still managed to get an out on. The Giants really do stink. They're gonna be bad.

Hilarious

Scoring that as a fielder's choice just doesn't seem right. :(

by MADness on Mar 31, 2008 7:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Gaffes like that tipped it into absurdity

But what was striking to me is just how weak the contact was at the plate today from the Giants end, and how Zito just kept serving marshmallows. It didn't seem like Penny was especially dominant, the Giants just looked particularly pathetic. It truly looked like a AAA team to me today, and maybe not a very good one.

Since we have a

disturbing tendency to sometimes play to the level of our opponents (we suck against bad teams, kick butt against good ones) we'll need to exploit them for all they're worth. We get to face them plenty this year, so we'd better be taking advantage.

by Silverblood on Mar 31, 2008 7:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree with that...

and after watching that Dodgers-Giants game today, I might want to commit suicide after any game the Rockies lose to the Giants this season. Playing in the NL West sure won't help them either. What is thier ceiling for losses this year? 105? 110??

Thank god for baseball season.

Good jeebus, the Pirates are awful

They had a 9-4 lead on the Braves in the top of the ninth. And then Marte and Capps blow it all, so it's tied at 9 in the top of the tenth. I think it's painful to be a Rockies fan, I'd be intentionally overmedicating if I was a Pirates fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 31, 2008 8:59 PM MDT reply actions

What does that make the Braves?

They're 0-2 against the Nationals & Pirates.

Wells

Kip Wells is your Opening Day pitcher. And on April Fools. That's just crazy enough to actually work.

We're about to find out quite a bit about what kind of competitor Mr. Wells is. Think of everything he has to prove -- to the team that let him go AND to the team that said he wasn't good enough to start the season in the rotation. Now he's got an opportunity for major redemption, far earlier than anyone would have imagined.

What will Kip do with this opportunity? The answer will tell you alot about whether that $3.1 million investment was worth it.

I base this on nothing other than blind optimism, but I have a feeling he'll come through, and give the team 5 or 6 decent innings -- enough to keep them in the game. Hey, after the way Mother Nature bailed Francis out today, you gotta think the universe is tilting in our direction.

Wow, Tad Iguchi is looking like

a good pickup for the Pads. Three hits tonight including a pair of doubles.

I'm still writing a paper for my class, it's due in 1 hour..

BTW how is your book coming along?

There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on Mar 31, 2008 10:57 PM MDT up reply actions

The book itself is long since finished

(I'm actually editing and re-reading it now) but the trick is getting it published. A pair of editors are reading it, or at least I think they are, as it's been a while since I heard anything. But I'm hopeful.

by Silverblood on Mar 31, 2008 11:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Well good luck with it!

I'm going to ask you to sign a copy after I buy it from Borders.

Don't worry

I've already gotten multiple requests for a signed copy, so I suppose I'll add your name to the list. :) This, of course, is all incumbent on someone taking the damn thing in the first place, but thanks for asking.

Feeds

Does anyone know where to find RSS (or other) feeds for the new site? The feed I have set up for the main posts still works, but the feed I had for Diaries doesn't work anymore. Is there one somewhere for FanPosts (and for FanShots, for that matter)? I can't even seem to find one for the main posts (though the old one still seems to work).

Tuesday's win expectancy

Good job on the rain out today. My simulator has the Rockies win expectancy in tuesday's game at 47.6%.
