Game #14: Redman vs Germano

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres, Apr 16, 2008 8:05 PM MDT

I should be back in time from tonight's Tourists game to actually be able to comment in a game thread again. And now that I have a computer, I might actually be able to do it, pending a working Internet connection. Okay, one hurdle to clear at a time, I guess. At any rate, let's not let another Padres pitcher get a near no-hitter off of us. In fact, karma would be kind if we got a near all-hitter against Germano.

Let's go Rockies!

Starting with a positive

Rather than “going negative” as to Redman starting, let’s start positive. Josh Fogg is NOT starting. He gave up 9 ER in 2 innings tonight to the Cubs, putting his ERA for the year at 13.91.

Go Redman! The wise personnel choice.

The Denver Post

Gives tonight’s lineup as:

CF Ryan Spilborghs
SS Troy Tulowitzki
1B Todd Helton
LF Matt Holliday
3B Garrett Atkins
RF Brad Hawpe
2B Clint Barmes
C Chris Iannetta
LHP Jeff Francis

Spilly? Leading off? I have no real objection, I’m just wondering want Clint’s been sipping?

The rockies game is on the same channel as the yankees red sox game, which is currently 11-9 in the sixth as Latroy Hawkins attempts to give up more runs.

Put up or shut up time

For Francis. He needs to dominate tonight. Also, Iannetta and Barmes are in a great position to impress for more playing time, and they need to show it.

very strange

Last night had plenty of fighting breaking out.

It was ridiculous. And for what it’s worth, baseball fights have always bored me to no end. Not that hockey fights are particularly interesting, but at least they have potential. You’d think with benches and bullpens clearing in baseball fights more actual…fighting would happen, but it’s mostly a ton of posturing…for nothing. Hockey fights are boring, too, for the most part, but occasionally you get a free-swinging slugfest as opposed to the more common jersey tug-of-war.

Red and Redman

Why is it I’m more confident in Redman coming into tonight than I have been with any of the other starters save maybe Cook? I think we did find us a left-handed Fogg. The youngsters can be shaky or spectacular, but the old(er) horse at the bottom just gets it done with minimal stuff. Here’s hoping that U-Ball and Morales can take away something from this and work on becoming pitchers rather than throwers. I just don’t know what’s up with Francis though.

Dilemma

Now I know I’m too easy on Clint, but I’m getting close to saying he’s the man at 2B. Which kinda poses a dilemma. I like Nix at 2B too, but I don’t see him being capable of playing the other infield positions required of a bench player…. And he’s out of options….. If this were a rebulding year, it’d be easy to carry a limited role rookie on the bench…. But should this Barmy resurgence continue…. What do you do with Nix? Too soon to worry about such things of course, but I’m just saying.

by IowaRockie on Apr 16, 2008 8:58 PM MDT reply actions

Clint is good, and he's hot right now, but...

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 16, 2008 10:02 PM MDT reply actions

Somewhere warm, maybe?

It was 71 here in Evanston today, breaking 70 for the first time in 178 days.

Yes, 178 days. Nearly half a year. The last time it was 70 in Evanston was during the 9-day layoff between NLCS and World Series.

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 16, 2008 10:04 PM MDT up reply actions

I have no idea what the temperature here was

but the cold front of the past two days has been great because the days of 90% humidity and 98 degree temperatures are just weeks away.

Do you play OOTP Baseball? There’s a guy who posts on the threads at OOTP who has the same James Lawrence quote in his sig.

Just curious.

Bucky or Tito? Bucky’s set hit 3rd in the next inning.

Tito.

Though I have to say that Bucky’s been awfully impressive so far. Tito’s been solid, but Buchholz has exceeded everybody’s expecations, I think.

Iannetta should have been going way more since the return from Springs last year.

by roxintober on Apr 16, 2008 10:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed.

He was forced into the starter’s role too early last year, but there’s no denying that the extra seasoning with the Sky Sox really helped his swing. In my opinion, he’s better on both sides of the ball than Yorvy.

The whole team breaks out.

Tulo playing well means he can get on others’ cases again.

I like both of these theories.

by dogs on Apr 16, 2008 10:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Let us hope.

I don’t know if you read the SI story about Tulo a few weeks back, but for those that haven’t:

On that now-famous date (at least to Rockies fans) of May 21 last year, after the Rox lost to drop to 18-27, Tulo started yelling and throwing equipment around, saying “This team is too good to be playing this s**t!”

They went 70-46 after that. Hopefully, Tulo can be that spark again this year.

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 16, 2008 10:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Join in anytime. Since you’ve been here, Holliday has gotten his first hit and Tulo his first RBI’s.

These sort of games

just make the nights when we can’t hit a lick all the more frustrating. The talent is undoubtedly THERE, but it seems like sometimes we just can’t tap it.

These are the REAL Rockies, and I hope (for all our sakes) they make this sort of game the exception rather than the rule real soon.

Pads bullpen

could be a big weakness of theirs

by moomacher on Apr 16, 2008 10:29 PM MDT reply actions

I'm not so sure.

They’ve still got Meredith, Bell (I think), and Hoffman, who, much as I make fun of him, is still awesome.

We’ll take it when we can get it, though.

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 16, 2008 10:30 PM MDT up reply actions

My boys

Atkins and Tulo lookin’ sharp out there (finally, Troy… seriously, and hopefully this is the start of a good thing rather than more struggles). And I second Tyler. We know how good the good times can be, which make the bad times all the more frustrating.

Went to my second consecutive Mets game tonight. Fun, but cold.

We were in the upper level

so it was the nosebleeds, but good. And believe it or not, I sat down next to the only other Rockies fan in the place. She saw me in my Rockies hoodie and said, “Rockies fan!” I said, “Yep, joined before 2007, I might add.” She said, “Me too!” We talked all night. Great fun.

by Silverblood on Apr 16, 2008 10:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Awesome!

I saw a guy (who, I swear, I’ve never met before) wearing a Rockies t-shirt in the dining hall tonight. Looked just like Tulo, too (but about nine inches shorter). We talked for a few minutes—I didn’t ask, but I sorta got the impression he’d been a fan since October 1, 2007, if you know what I mean.

Then I saw another kid wearing a Colorado College shirt, and we talked NCAA hockey for a while. It was wild.

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 16, 2008 10:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Great game...

An enjoyable level of tension for the first 8 innings, and now an offensive explosion for the cursory Corpas appearance.

And there goes Barmes, too.
