Game #14: Redman vs Germano
Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres, Apr 16, 2008 8:05 PM MDT
I should be back in time from tonight's Tourists game to actually be able to comment in a game thread again. And now that I have a computer, I might actually be able to do it, pending a working Internet connection. Okay, one hurdle to clear at a time, I guess. At any rate, let's not let another Padres pitcher get a near no-hitter off of us. In fact, karma would be kind if we got a near all-hitter against Germano.
Let's go Rockies!

Starting with a positive
Rather than “going negative” as to Redman starting, let’s start positive. Josh Fogg is NOT starting. He gave up 9 ER in 2 innings tonight to the Cubs, putting his ERA for the year at 13.91.
Go Redman! The wise personnel choice.
Astros fan for 46 frustrating years. Moving to CO in 4 years & maybe switching no. 1 team. I'm patient & loyal, but a half-century is enough. Cubs fans are nuts.
The Denver Post
Gives tonight’s lineup as:
CF Ryan Spilborghs
SS Troy Tulowitzki
1B Todd Helton
LF Matt Holliday
3B Garrett Atkins
RF Brad Hawpe
2B Clint Barmes
C Chris Iannetta
LHP Jeff Francis
Spilly? Leading off? I have no real objection, I’m just wondering want Clint’s been sipping?

extra innings is going to kill me today
The rockies game is on the same channel as the yankees red sox game, which is currently 11-9 in the sixth as Latroy Hawkins attempts to give up more runs.
Put up or shut up time
For Francis. He needs to dominate tonight. Also, Iannetta and Barmes are in a great position to impress for more playing time, and they need to show it.
Spilly draws a
walk to start the game. Good things, good things . . .

wooWOO
scoring early is always fun. We should follow it up by scoring in every inning. How fun would that be?
That would be a cushion
Redman shouldn’t need much, should he?

8 more to go!
Yeah, I’m excited to watch some baseball tonight. After sitting through that torture that was the Avs game last night, a Rockies game feels like vacation. I can’t wait for me to have to eat those words in 4 innings lolol

I tell you what
That was a pretty nice inning. Nothing fancy, just getting guys out easily. Good things happen when you don’t get behind in the count all the time.
Impostor?
I don’t have TV, just ESPN Gamecast. Are we sure that’s not the “real” Francis wearing Redman’s uni?

I don't remember

2 out hitting, what a concept. keep it up, Tulo…
1 per inning
That works, unless you’re Red Sox v. Yanks (11-9 in the 6th)

Like the shake up
Not saying Wily shouldn’t be starting and batting lead-off tomorrow, but this is a nice change. Good to see Tulo hit a rope, even if it was caught.
You'd think with his poor start
that at least the hard hit balls would fall in for Tulo. But apparently not…

That is how it goes
I’m choosing to believe that bad luck liners are the first sign of the turn-around.
Redman
looks really good. Not trying too hard, just pitching to bats
Of the top ROY candidates last year
Tulo & Hunter Pence are in absolute funks.
Chris Young is hitting HR’s, but his avg. is barely over .200
Ryan Braun’s way off his pace from a year ago.
Who will break the Sophomore Slump first?
My money’s on Tulo.

very strange
I’m watching a baseball game and a hockey game at the same time. I’d say it’s polar opposites in terms of how the games are played (basic fast-slow comparison).
When a fight breaks out in baseball, it's news

Last night had plenty of fighting breaking out.
It was ridiculous. And for what it’s worth, baseball fights have always bored me to no end. Not that hockey fights are particularly interesting, but at least they have potential. You’d think with benches and bullpens clearing in baseball fights more actual…fighting would happen, but it’s mostly a ton of posturing…for nothing. Hockey fights are boring, too, for the most part, but occasionally you get a free-swinging slugfest as opposed to the more common jersey tug-of-war.

patience
I know they look like meatballs, gents
So much for my run every inning theory
=[
It would have been awesome to at least make it interesting and go 4-5 innings, but I’ll still take the runs we already have.
Red and Redman
Why is it I’m more confident in Redman coming into tonight than I have been with any of the other starters save maybe Cook? I think we did find us a left-handed Fogg. The youngsters can be shaky or spectacular, but the old(er) horse at the bottom just gets it done with minimal stuff. Here’s hoping that U-Ball and Morales can take away something from this and work on becoming pitchers rather than throwers. I just don’t know what’s up with Francis though.
Leave Fogg out of it

Barmy!
Okay, the question on everybody’s mind has to be: Would Nix have gotten that?

my question was “now what can he do with the bat?”

Safe!
Greene keeps the ball from going to the outfield, but Barmes makes into second on a close play.

Dilemma
Now I know I’m too easy on Clint, but I’m getting close to saying he’s the man at 2B. Which kinda poses a dilemma. I like Nix at 2B too, but I don’t see him being capable of playing the other infield positions required of a bench player…. And he’s out of options….. If this were a rebulding year, it’d be easy to carry a limited role rookie on the bench…. But should this Barmy resurgence continue…. What do you do with Nix? Too soon to worry about such things of course, but I’m just saying.
Clint is good, and he's hot right now, but...
His bat is too slow, and until a miracle happens pitchers are going to eventually find the hole in his swing.
There's only one Rocktober!!
Bat speed
Actually, the bat speed is what I find most interesting. Prior to his injury, Clint had great bat speed… Post-injury, it was terrible. Is it possible the speed is coming back? I think it has at least to some degree.
Almost forgot
Oops…. I referred to the “injury” without making an obligatory deer reference. Won’t do it again.
Look at it from the opposing team's perspective
Who would you rather face as a batter- Barmes or Nix?
I think it’s a no brainer.
Here’s novel baseball concept: play Barmes until he stops hitting. Give him the same shot Nix got.
My daughter says she wants to marry Taylor Bucholz.
But I'm not sure about the beard.
Redman
WTF, basic fundamentals. Horrible bunt attempts and bunt in the end. And probably “half assed” it up the line.
A-gone is struggling lately...
He’s hitting 2 for 13 in his last four games. If this keeps up they might have to change his nickname to K-gone.

Wow.
Perhaps this whole “Rox win when Tyler doesn’t pay attention” thing has some weight. I consciously decided to ignore tonight’s game, but eventually couldn’t take it anymore and said, “Aw, hell, I’ll just check the score at the Row.”
So I get here to find that not only has Redman failed to fail, but the Rox are locked in an awesome one-run game.
So here I am. The Rockies will now lose. Sorry about that.
Then go away.
Absolutely kidding, of course. =)

Iannetta should have been going way more since the return from Springs last year.
Agreed.
He was forced into the starter’s role too early last year, but there’s no denying that the extra seasoning with the Sky Sox really helped his swing. In my opinion, he’s better on both sides of the ball than Yorvy.

The whole team breaks out.
Tulo playing well means he can get on others’ cases again.
Let us hope.
I don’t know if you read the SI story about Tulo a few weeks back, but for those that haven’t:
On that now-famous date (at least to Rockies fans) of May 21 last year, after the Rox lost to drop to 18-27, Tulo started yelling and throwing equipment around, saying “This team is too good to be playing this s**t!”
They went 70-46 after that. Hopefully, Tulo can be that spark again this year.
