Thursday Rockpile:

The changes to the Rockies lineup last night helped the train start rolling, but I don't know if we've got enough momentum yet to be running into Jake Peavy. Of course, everybody remembers the last time we played Jake, and that seems to be the story for tonight's matchup, but what I will be looking at mostly is how Jeff Francis responds after struggling thus far to find the same kind of success he had last season.

I guess I should save those kinds of questions for the gamethread, which I should probably work on posting right now as well.  So once again, sorry for keeping light on the content this week.

Ugh

That was a tough vote. I really was impressed with all facets of Ianetta’s performance yesterday, but I think that putting Barmes at 2nd will give us a lot more of a sustained boost. Though I’m not sure we’ll see any of that tonight; since we’re going against Peavy, we’ll have to be putting our “best” hitters in…

Based on early results

I’d be forced to venture that our “best hitter” at 2nd is Barmes. While Ianetta had a great game last night, Yorvit’s gotten some big hits thus far so that’s a toss-up for me.

And according to the Post (6:10 pm)

Barmes will get the start at 2B tonight. Willy and Yorvit will resume their regular spots.

It's only Primary season

I don’t think any of those changes are merited on a permanent basis, yet. However, no reason not to see where Barmes’ bat can take us the next few days, at least.

Tough one

Hmmmm…. I went with Barmes, because I think Nix is a year or two away from being ready to be a solid starting 2B on a competing team. Which is not to say that he’s been a disappointment. He seems solid in the field (although I haven’t seen the plays to justify some of the hype in this area), and I love his ability to work the count and draw walks. I just haven’t seen that solid contact or power (and I’m not looking for all that much) that makes me think pitchers will continue to allow him to be so patient at the plate. Plus, I just got a gut feeling (which is to say it’s based on nothing but last week’s burrito and cheesecake) that he is back to the pre-deer Barmes.
But it’s more complicated than that. As much as I’d like to see Barmes be an impact 2B for us this year, I think it’s more important that Ianetta start getting consistant playing time. I think his bat’s better than Torry’s now, and his potential is considerably higher. To the point where riding the bench too much could be a detriment not only this year, but for years to come. I do think Torry has the better glove, and is a plain rock-solid starting catcher or in the least the world’s greatest back-up. If there were no Iannetta riding the pine, I wouldn’t have a bad thing to say about him. So, had there been an option for INCREASED playing time for Ianetta, I think I’d have gone that direction. Ideally I’d like to see Ianetta get 60% of the starts, but would settle for even 40%. Since I do sorta believe in catchers and pitchers getting to know how each each other works, let’s say Francis and Redman since they should theroretically serve up the least amount of 58’ sinkers and wildness.

Another day....

another scoreless appearance for KC by Ramon Ramirez. He’s unscored upon in 6 appearances and has yet to walk a man.

But at least we have Kip Wells.

Yeah that does hurt a bit

Good for Rami though! At least our bullpen still looks pretty dang good. Wells has been pretty much effective, although nerve-racking in his appearances and can start I suppose if/when we need him. Still, I’d take Rami at what…. 1/4 the price? Anybody see that guy we got for Rami pitch yet? Is there any hope there to make hindsight any more palpable?
