Nice
Nice to see the lineup with Spillborghs and Iannetta from last night that worked so well isn’t the same one we’ll be using tonight.
Good ol' HurdleLogic (tm)
thinking that this constitutes our “best lineup” against Peavy (the starters, being starters, must ERGO be better than the backups?)
That’s my guess.
Just make it stop.
Best explanation I can think of
I swear we win in spite of Hurdle sometimes.
meet you half way
I’m on board with not starting Ianetta, and may join you on bashing Hurdlelogic if he’s not starting Ianetta tomorrow. I’m fine with Wily T over Spilly tonight though. Remember how Spilly wore down pretty fast last year when Wily was hurt? Wily is still the starting CF in my book. I think we’ll see more Spilly in the coming weeks though.
Yeah I agree
Spilly can’t play too much, although Hawpe seems to be getting more pt against left handing pitching this year. Ianetta isn’t the starter yet, but he should catch 2-3 days a week. Barmes, though, needs to be ridden until he cools off.
By the way
I am obviously new here in case anyone cares. I go to school at Colorado in Boulder and have been a Rockies fan through the thick and thin. I’m hoping to chat it up on some of these game threads when my schedule allows it.
Welcome to the Row!
I’m one of the hoary old veterans, so I’ll extend the hand of welcome to the n00bie. Game threads are a lot of fun.
Just make it stop.
Relatively speaking.
If you’re a veteran, Rox Girl and I are fossils.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Well, I've been on the Row since 2006
So in comparison, that does make me a veteran, yes. But you two might BE fossils.
Just make it stop.
Thank You
By the way, this is an excellent baseball blog. Has to be one of the best out there hands down.
How's Boulder these days
I imagine the weather makes it tough to focus on class….I think once the sunny 70 degree days hit my attendance and productivity plummeted.
Boulder
The weather hasn’t been that great really. We had a couple 70 degree days Monday and Tuesday then it snowed again last night and was cold again today. You’re definately right though, when the weather picks up like it should in the coming weeks class is going to be difficult to attend. Boulder is such an awesome city though. I really like it.
Welcome to PR!
I joined last fall, and love it here. I’m confident you will too!

Thanks you!
I’m sure I will too. I have read it for some time, just never made an account or commented in the game threads.
Do you post over there?
I can’t remember seeing you over there.
I think
I have the first comment over there, but I read it everyday.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Gotcha
What do you think of the Nuggets chances against LA? The fan in me says we have a shot, the realist in me says it will be another quick one and done for us.
Aghh
once again the yankees are killing me right now. extra innings doesn’t have this until the game is over.
Peavy
showing why he’s always a Cy Young contender.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Hmm
Please don’t let it be one of “those” nights. We’ve had all too many recently.
Time for Francis to start figuring something out.
Just make it stop.
Woohoo!
At least Helton put it in play….... Of course I’ve never seen anybody hit a ball on one knee before. :(
Francis
Really needs a solid outing tonight. Him and Cook need to be the stabilizing forces in this rotation and so far only Cook has done that.
A bit
Still love watching him hit with two strikes though. I think I actually feel more confident in Helton with two strikes than at 3-1 count. Can’t think of anther guy that would be so annoying to the opposing pitcher.
Francis....
Please make it be as simple as lining up on the other side of the pitching rubber!
Escape... Whew!

Nice K
for The Physicist, but his tendency to still have a lot of traffic, plus the fact that we have to hit Peavy, is worrisome.
Just make it stop.
Re: Rockhead
Just noticed your question about XM Radio last night. To answer it: YES YES YES. It’s a must for an out-of-town fan (unless you do Extra Innings, but I have no TV). The only possible reason I can see for not getting it would be if you can’t abide listening to out-of-town announcers when the Rox are on the road (they pick up the home town’s broadcasters), but otherwise it’s superb.
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 17, 2008 8:24 PM MDT up reply actions
Second
I’ll second that. I have Extra innings as well (about the only way I ever get to see the Rockies), but XM is great too for: At work, on the road, or just working around the house. Plus, I’m a radio nut anyway and there’s something for everyone on XM.
I'll chime in
I like XM for the games because I find games blacked out from time to time on Extra Innings, and if that happens, I can listen on XM. Plus if I’m traveling, I know I can still listen to the game.

Nice work, Francis.
Both to get yourself into the jam, and to get yourself out.

Is here tonight, I see!

We'll see.
I seem to either screw us when we’re ahead, or spur us on to victory. Let’s see which one it is tonight.
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 17, 2008 8:24 PM MDT up reply actions
Yep that was the answer
Now just line Morales and Jimenez on the other side of the mound, and we’ll be on pace to win 140 games. It must be easy to be a pitching coach some times.
Yeesh.
Not a good at-bat there, but then again, it’s Peavy.
I hope
we are not resorting to this excuse later on to make ourselves feel better about… well, sucking….
I would rather we hit him like we did at the tiebreaker. That was fun.
Just make it stop.
He had to touch it twice.
Hand came off as he slid over the bag.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Holliday
took a page from Miguel Montero’s Big Baserunning Bible right there.
Barmes
Can he hit and field adequately enough to be the starting 2b? I’m still unconvinced but he is looking like the best option we got.
ESPN
is apparently contractually obligated to devote at least eight hours to Yankees-Red Sox every day.
Red Sox lead 7-5 if anybody cares. I wish they could both lose.
Oh boy
Please don’t come back, Post-Deer Barmes. I really like Pre-Deer Barmes better.

Two bloop hits
Jeff in a little jam here; 1st and 3rd with 2 outs and Giles up.
"Corpas ready, first pitch, checkswing roller...Tulowitzki has it, throws to first...BALLGAME! WORLD SERIES TIME IN COLORADO!"
Bloops okay by me
After Jeff’s last few starts I’ll take a dozen bloops and wouldn’t even feel too bad about losing the game…. If Francis can just start turning it around.
Jeff,
are you going to allow Peavy a hit and not get one off him?
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Phew.
Another Houdini act for our bookish little Canuck.
No damage done
I would say it’s time for the offense to give Jeff some insurance, but look who’s coming up next inning. We’ll have to wait until the 4th.
"Corpas ready, first pitch, checkswing roller...Tulowitzki has it, throws to first...BALLGAME! WORLD SERIES TIME IN COLORADO!"
What?
You don’t think Torrealba-Francis-Taveras is a good offensive trio? They’re downright scary.
Although perhaps not in the way we would like, yes.
Just make it stop.
Escapes again
but 44 pitches through 2. Jeff’s nickname should be Adriana Lima, because he’s causing traffic jams.
Just make it stop.
I was just about to say
How did that happen again? I was at that game and we were hitting him like he was some scrub called up from AAA
Sportsmanship
Would it be bad sportsmanship for Francis to scratch off that “SD” in the dirt behind home plate?
Willy T goes fishing....
La dee dee.
Let’s see if Adriana can get through an inning without traffic, hem?
Just make it stop.
Because...
Peavy’s a tough righty and Spilly does his best against lefties, and he started last night and is a backup and…. whatever.
Just make it stop.
Tejada
Just read Miquel Tejada lied about his age and is 33 instead of 31. I’m betting Francis did the same thing and is 17.
2 pitches, 2 outs
Gotta love it. Let’s make it 3 for 3.
"Corpas ready, first pitch, checkswing roller...Tulowitzki has it, throws to first...BALLGAME! WORLD SERIES TIME IN COLORADO!"
Not quite 3
But a K to end it is alright in my book. Now it’s time for the bats to get going.

nasty
that change is unhittable when he puts it on the outside corner like that
Fewer pitches that inning for Jeff.
THAT was the Jeff Francis to whom we’ve become accustomed.
Oops.
I have Jake Peavy starting for my fantasy team tonight. Guess I’ll be rooting for my fantasy team to get bombed (for the third week in a row).
It doesn't split mine.
When it comes to rooting for my real team or my fantasy team, it’s not even close to a contest.

Really feel for Tulo right now
He just doesn’t look comfortable at the plate at all.
Lest we forget...
he hit something like .154 last April, and last year ended up halfway decent for him. I’m confident he’ll come around.
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 17, 2008 8:56 PM MDT up reply actions
Sigh...
Hoping last night’s late double would have helped Tulo pick it up, but Baby Jaybus, does he look bad at the moment.

Close Todd
But not quite enough.

Time for a two run shot here, Atkins. Or an RBI double. Something.

The Padres broadcasters have a sense of humor.
They were commenting (positively) on the “Didja touch that?” Rockies commercial.
I’ll say it again—best non-Rockies broadcast team in baseball. I actually ENJOY listening to them.

lol
He is a regular Mike Piazza out there isn’t he?
Beautiful pitch
On the outside corner. Unhittable. May have been a ball.
Has Peavy been
in the league long enough to get what we may call “the Greg Maddux strike zone” from umpires yet?
Don't get me started
On Maddux.

Boo
Let’s all sight and mutter “peavy…” under our breath.
Another shake up?
Okay, this is Peavy and all and as such perhaps I should give the line-up a mulligan….. But I’m kinda thinking it’s time to drop Tulo down in the lineup for 2 or 3 games. Maybe even 8th. Maybe force him to be a bit more patient, but mostly just to shake it up.
Love the idea
Who would you have hit 2-hole though?
uhhhh......
Geez, I’m not getting paid for this. I’m just throwing out half-baked ideas here! ;) Okay, how about Barmes? That’s really tick off Tulo. The guy he thought he buried last year steals his slot. Yep, that may just be enough to get it done. Either that or just shift the entire line-up up one.
Barmes
He would be the only logical option I see. Unless you slide Atkins in that 2-hole which could backfire on you RBI wise.
Actually
Helton would be great in the 2 hole with his OBP and LH bat, and Holliday, Atkins, and Hawpe could all logically slide up one slot quite easily in a pinch. It’s not ideal.
OT: Avs score!
3-1 lead now with about 13 mins left in the 3rd period!

Francis looking good
He is mixing his speeds really well like vintage Francis.
Unfortunately
taking a lot of pitches to get outs this inning, but as long as they’re still outs, I won’t complain. Too much.
Just make it stop.
See, that's U-Ball's problem.
He looks great for the first eighty-ish pitches, and then hits a wall.
But then again, he’s a flamethrower. With Francis being more of a finesse guy, I’m not as concerned. That said, I’d still like to see him be a bit more efficient.
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 17, 2008 9:11 PM MDT up reply actions
It seems to me
for some odd reason that after pitch #91, Uball just goes to hell. Something he needs to work on.

Nice play by Atkins
and a good pick by Helton to dig it out. I still can’t believe he didn’t win a gold glove last year.

Gold Gloves
I don’t think the writers vote on Gold Gloves. Isn’t it the players and coaches who do that?

He does
however, not from last year. Derrek Friggen’ Lee got it in Helton’s place.

Oh I"m sorry
I thougth you had posted his career fielding percentage. Yeah last year was a travesty for Helton and Tulo to be honest.
Nope.
That was the Rockies’ team FA last year.
.98925. 86 errors in 8000 total chances.
No Gold Gloves. Truly unbelievable.

Good play Atkins
Not an easy play by any means.
Great pitchers duel going here...
I love these sorts of games.
Pitch count
What’s Peavy’s pitch count at? Maybe the goal should be to take and foul off as many pitches as possible the next couple innings just to try to get rid of him. Either that or tell the umpire you overheard him talking ill about his mother. Anything to get rid of him soon.
One BB for Francis so far.
THAT makes me happier than just about anything else.
Okay
Anyone got his cell phone number? I’ll see if I can get him riled up and out of his game.
At least Francis
has looked capable of matching up with Peavy tonight. That is a good thing.
Can we please score a damn run? Or get another hit? Otherwise it would be 2-hit shutout, 10-run explosion, 1-hit shutout. We’re like a student driver—we hit the gas and lurch forward, come to a screeching halt, lurch forward again, veer onto the sidewalk, and jerk to a halt at a red light.
Just make it stop.
I mean.....
Every day the Yankees have to get in their limo with the tinted glass windows, chilled champagne, and caviar just to get out on the same red carpet again and again. Give me the odd sidewalk, squealling brake, and stalled engine any day.
Ok Tulo
You can start being Tulo again anytime now.
Francis
looked like he expected that one to go out. Poor guy was traumatized by the D’backs.

First-pitch out for Helton?
Sad thing is, Firefox remembered that subject, which means I must have used it before. I dislike.

Todd hasn't done much this series
I’m not too worried though, he always finds a way to hit .320 at least.

I thought I would note
that the Nats’ Ronnie Belliard made an error in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and nobody on that led to the Mets tying the game at 2. That game is now in the 14th. Good defense cannot be overstated….

Simple reason(s) for bringing out Francis for the 7th
1. He’s cruising.
2. He’s due up third in the top of the 8th, so you’ll pinch hit for him anyway.

Funny you say that
Because last year I thought Tulo was rock solid mentally. I never thought that’d be a problem. But you don’t go into slumps like this with his kind of talent without it being at least part mental.
Whether it's contract pressure
