Game #2: Cook vs Wellemeyer

Colorado @ St. Louis

Aaron Cook is a better pitcher than Todd Wellemeyer. I think we can all pretty much come to that understanding when presented with all the evidence. The Rockies have a more balanced, deeper offense than the Cardinals. Point two, for us. A little stickier issue might be our bullpen, as I'm pretty certain Hurdle won't go to Buchholz two nights in a row, yet, meaning that Luis Vizcaino and Matt Herges figure to see work tonight. Still, if we get to the eighth inning with the lead, there should be no reason to worry. I'm hoping therefore for a smooth, efficient seven innings from Cook and a whallop from the offense that puts this thing out of reach early. I just can't find myself trusting the Viz yet after a very erratic and ineffectual spring.

I hope you're right about Cook

Though it seems in this day and age 6 innings is all you can expect, especially with Hurdle.

Shoot

Can say that about any major league manager. Pinella pulled Lilly today after 4 2/3 against the Brewers today, and to that point he'd only given up 3 earned with two men on. Brought in a pitcher who promptly added another run to Lilly's ERA.

Not like I feel bad for the Cubs by any means, but I just saw that over lunch and was a bit shocked.

Just keep walking down the path boys...

by MattTheRock on Apr 2, 2008 5:34 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I know...

I'm just hoping the Cardinals are too aggressive tonight with his sinker. They had a lot of first pitch hacks yesterday, if Cook's near the zone -but down in it, obviously- I think he's got a good chance at having several single digit innings as far as the pitch count goes.

by Rox Girl on Apr 2, 2008 5:38 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought maybe

they'd let Iannetta have the start with Cook on the mound tonight, but that won't be the case as the Rockies will use the same lineup.

One interesting point to watch will be to see how Cook utilizes what is to be the Rockies best middle infield defense this decade, if not ever (so long as Nix plays ad advertised). Matsui was a good if not great raw defender, but with two smart, position conscious defenders with great range in the middle infield, the defense could shave another half run off Cook's ERA from last year.

by David OhNo on Apr 2, 2008 5:51 PM MDT   0 recs

I thought

the same. If his cut fastball performs as advertised against lefties, he might have a breakout year this year.

I've been in this game a hundred years, but I see new ways to lose I never knew existed before. - Casey Stengel

by Behrens on Apr 2, 2008 5:52 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Sort of agree,

But I think the biggest cut to his ERA comes when Atkins moves in favor of Stewart. I think the Nix effect will be there, particularly when it comes to turning DP's, but it will be less than a quarter of a run.

by Rox Girl on Apr 2, 2008 5:54 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I do agree there

at any rate, should Cook have tremendous success in the early going thanks to the defense, it could give the FO reason to want to push Reynolds if it looks like his strong suits (getting grounders) fits the teams strong suits (turning grounders into outs), assuming health becomes a non-issue.

MLB.TV users with Mosaic

is anybody passing the time before the Rockies game by watching the wiffleball matchup between Garza and Cabrera? Neither throws a ball straight, or one than less than a plate's worth of break. The difference being Garza throws his wiffle fastballs in the zone. I will always be impressed with Cabrera's raw arm, but I don't think he'll be putting it together anytime soon, but in Garza's case, his arm looks special.

Time for Willy T to get us started

A couple runs in the first inning would be nice to give Cookie an early lead and a chance to settle in.

by Silverblood on Apr 2, 2008 6:26 PM MDT   0 recs

Good to see Helton take third

on that single. Bill James' Goldmine called Helton one of the worst baserunners in taking the extra base in '07, and even Helton noted he was in need of improvement here.

If he's going to hit in front of Holliday and not hit with much power, taking extra bags will be imperative.

That slow-mo replay

showed that the hop from Hawpe's throw wasn't as bad as Atkins made it out to be. He should have kept his glove out front, taken the short hop, and applied the tag to the hip.

Between that and his low throw to second, there are two small subtleties of poor defensive play that allowed a run to score.
