How old does Wesley Wright look to you?

If he was pitching in the LL World Series this year, I don’t think they’d even check his birth certificate.

My daughter says she wants to marry Taylor Bucholz.
But I'm not sure about the beard.

The good news for Rox fans on Wright ..

who’s young, left-handed, throws a low-90s fastball, an 83-84 mph slider & a curve, is that the ‘Stros Rule 5’d him for $50,000 … from the DODGERS. At least he won’t be showing up in the NL West.

Astro fan repression was mentioned above. Our Rule 5 win-loss column will never be evened. The Rule 5 guy we lost was named Johan Santana.

Trying to think positive...

9-9 after our first 18 games, 12 of which have been played on the road and all but only 2 series with playoff contenders (that is unless, you think the Cardnials are for real.) If we can go 3-1 on this mini home stand and at least 3-3 on the california road trip next week, that would leave us at 15-13 at the end of Apri. I could be happy with that, considering we would have 18 road games out of they way, which is roughly 22%.

These are the things you have to tell yourself on days like today.

Thank god for baseball season.

It DOES happen every once in awhile…. but only when we play lousy defense.

3 games in as many days, amirite?

Lemme start this by saying I realize we won 2 of 3 in the series and came pretty close to the sweep. However, Brian Fuentes is not my favorite baseball player. After the incredible choke job he pulled off last season, he managed to somehow screw up a pretty enjoyable weekend slate of games (with FANTASTIC weather for this area in mid-April, by the way). I know he’s a good reliever, and has been solid for us for the past few seasons, but Brian Fuentes, I hate you.

Some very plain observations:
-Clint Barmes looks prettttty good to me. It’s almost like…he belongs in the majors, as our starting 2B. I really thought Nix was going to be a solid player, and maybe he will turn out that way, but Barmes won me over this weekend.
-Spilly is fun to watch, all the time, no matter what he’s doing.
-I do not at all enjoy Minute Maid Park. It’s a super lame rollercoaster away from being a county fair (though Houston could definitely use some rollercoasters after our Six Flags got shut down).
-U-Ball looks really mediocre. I was pretty much a fanboy of his during the stretch run last season, but today he looked…like he belonged in AAA. The control is really, really spotty.
-Garrett Atkins is a phenomenal hitter. I’m really blown away by watching him hit. It’s too bad we don’t have a DH. I’m still pretty jazzed about the Ian Stewart era, but whooo boy is Atkins making it tougher and tougher to stomach the feeling like Stewart’s time is juuuust around the corner.
-This team is very talented. Our record isn’t great, but the difference between watching the Astros and Rockies was really interesting. For a while, I went to their games when the Rox were in town, and I was just hoping for good things to happen. Now? I expect them to happen, whereas Astros fans sitting near me openly talk about how “it would be nice if we did something well”.
-Miguel Tejada is not at all liked, at least by the people sitting near me in all 3 games (same section, mostly same people).
-Carlos Lee was an enormous waste of money. He’s not terrible, but that contract is disgusting.
-Oh my god did the D’Backs sell high on Valverde or what?
-Houston traffic/drivers = really, really, really awful. Never come down here unless it’s an emergency.

So there you have it. My fairly uninteresting observations about three games. I have more, but they’re mostly inane stuff nobody but an OCD dork like me would care about.

P.S. I can’t stress this enough. I hate you Brian Fuentes.

by A.J. Haefele on Apr 20, 2008 5:03 PM MDT reply actions

Yes.

We DID sell high on Papa Grande—led all MLB in saves, and all that BS. We still love him, but the guy’s still a headcase.

+1 for OCD, though.

I have a proposition:

We never let Fuentes pitch in Houston again, ever, not even if we’re up 20. No more Fuentes in Houston, ok Hurdle?

Every day is a Holliday!
