Game #20: Myers vs. Francis

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies, Apr 22, 2008 6:35 PM MDT

Brett Myers has made six appearances against the Rockies (5 starts, 1 relief) and has received the win in every one. That has to change, right?

Hum.

Can’t say I really agree with SITTING Tulo. I think he needs at bats, I’d just rather see him in the 8 hole. That said, I’m happy Barmes was moved down. We’ll see if it plays out.

www.notthisday.com ....coming October!!!

by Squeaky on Apr 22, 2008 5:40 PM MDT reply actions

I agree

I think he just needs to be moved down in the lineup. Look, Tulo is going to be fine. He is a hell of a baseball player, he just needs to work out of this funk and not try to bring his average back up to .300 with one swing of the bat everytime he steps to the plate.

Micah Bowie

on the DL. The Rockies called up Josh Newman to replace them.

by Tom (RFTN) on Apr 22, 2008 6:02 PM MDT reply actions

Hmmm

is Morillo doing that poorly?

by moomacher on Apr 22, 2008 6:03 PM MDT up reply actions

In a word, yes.

15 walks in 5.1 innings? I’d call that doing poorly. Plus, Newman is a lefty; putting Bowie on the DL means that Fuentes is the only lefty in the bullpen.

by Tom (RFTN) on Apr 22, 2008 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions

yikes

those are some bad numbers

by moomacher on Apr 22, 2008 6:07 PM MDT up reply actions

On an unrelated note...

Should we start referring to him as Paul Newman? It’s his middle name, after all.

by Tom (RFTN) on Apr 22, 2008 6:16 PM MDT up reply actions

The reason?

Just wondering. And I’m trying really hard to say something supremely sarcastic here.

Excluding last year

What were Tulo’s projection coming in from the Minor Leagues for anyone who knows. I know he was obviously a tremendous talent and the only reason I ask this is because I’m wondering if maybe he outperformed his projections last year. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.

by RyanBuff on Apr 22, 2008 6:57 PM MDT reply actions

From BP last year

After suffering through a torn quad and a broken hamate bone in 2005, the tenth overall pick of the 2005 draft showed he could handle the jump to Double-A in his full-season debut. That`s quite an accomplishment in itself, but he also earned a callup to the Show on August 30. He held his own on the big stage despite understandably appearing overmatched at times at the plate and in the field. There are still some adjustments to made, especially given how little power Tulowitzki displayed in his first major league go-round—just three extra-base hits in 96 at-bats. The power should come eventually, and, given the park, he should easily reach 20 home runs annually at his peak. Expected to be the Rockies` starting shortstop on Opening Day, he`ll get the chance to make those strides at the major league level.

by moomacher on Apr 22, 2008 7:11 PM MDT up reply actions

BTW his PECOTA projection this year

is 292/359/480, which is almost exactly what he did last year.

by moomacher on Apr 22, 2008 7:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Thank you so much for the info!

on a very close play that goes against the home team will call the umpire by his first name? In 16 seasons, only Dave Campbell (1994-97) was worth listening to. As in so many other things, you get what you pay for. No doubt these woeful hacks work cheap.

AZ with a 6 game lead after tonite

Well took the Rocks playing nearly perfect for 2 1/2 weeks to make it up last year. If things don’t change AZ could run away with it this year.

Rocks just can’t put it together. If they get beyond double digits in the standings, look out because I smell an Atkins deal for a starter on the horizon.

Stewart's on fire at AAA right now

So an Atkins trade might just be palatable if Ian has a great first half in the Springs and proves he’s ML ready. But I don’t see how a trade for a starter fixes the ills with this team… in fact, I think we’re probably overreacting a tad bit based on three straight out-of-character performances by a usually solid bullpen (though I’ve seen enough of Corpas this season to know it’s fair to be worried about him – he does not look like the same guy we rode to the pennant last year at this point).

Remember… when we made it up in 2.5 weeks last year, that was all the time we had. Tonight was the 20th game of the season. I think it’s safe to say that changes and fluctuations in the standings are ahead.

Your point is well taken

I just have a nagging suspicion that making it up in 2.5 weeks doesn’t happen every year. I’d prefer that the Rox not have to try it again in 08.

Bullpen

Would this be an appropriate time to mention that ramon Ramirez put up yet another scoreless outing for KC tonight?

Ramon’s ERA is 1.12. In 7 innings, he’s walked 1 and struck out 10.

Of course, we couldn’t use him in the bullpen because he showed up to spring training overweight.

And because we needed room to keep Kip Wells. And Micah Bowie.

by BroJB on Apr 22, 2008 10:03 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah, I thought about that too

But seriously, dude – Wells has been fine. Can you get off of his ass already? Geez, it’s like he killed your dog or something. Guy’s put up a 1.69 ERA in April, gave us a huge spot start on Opening Day, and you’re just ripping him at every opportunity.

It really seemed more like a ‘Bowie over Ramirez’ pick in the first place than a ‘Wells over Ramirez’ pick, anyway.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

by Franchise26 on Apr 22, 2008 10:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Wells

Wells has been fine, but, let’s face it, he’s a one year stop gap. Ramirez will give KC 5 or 6 good years.

Unloading a 26 year old guy with good stuff to keep a 31 year old guy who hasn’t had an ERA below 5 since 2004 didn’t make any sense then and it makes no sense now.

So sure, Wells has been good. But would you really rather have him (and his $3.1 mil contract) over Ramirez?

by BroJB on Apr 22, 2008 10:13 PM MDT up reply actions

and also....

It was a “wells over Ramirez” pick—if Wells was a non-roster invitiee and didn’t have that big guaranteed contract, he’d have been released based on how he pitched in AZ.

And no, he didn’t kill my dog. But, if my dog ever were offed by a big league pitcher, I’d hope it wouldn’t be by a guy who’s 20-45 in the past four years. My pooch deserves better than that.

by BroJB on Apr 22, 2008 10:17 PM MDT up reply actions

Ah, heck....

that was a cheap shot at Mr. wells. Just a little joke there. He’s been enough of a bright spot that he doesn’t deserve it. Sorry, Brother Kip.

I didn’t intend my post to turn into a Kip Wells good or evil thread. I’m simply bemoaning the needless loss of a good young reliever. I would rather have RR than Wells, but, credit where it’s due, Kip hasn’t been this team’s problem. If he keeps it up, I’ll leave him out of my regular “look how good Ramirez is doing in KC” posts. :)

by BroJB on Apr 22, 2008 10:25 PM MDT up reply actions

For all we know...

Ramirez kept stealing the last donut in the clubhouse every morning, pissing off his teammates so much that the Rox had no choice to let him go lest he get in a fight with somebody over a cruller or a bear claw.

I was bummed we couldn’t keep Ramirez, too. But I’ve found it doesn’t too a whole lot of good to dwell on what we had. What we have – presently – is a shaky bullpen because our 8th and 9th inning guys – our pillars! – are, as Joe Namath would say, strug-a-leeeng. Buchholz and Herges have been mostly good. Wells has been a nice surprise. Getting leads hasn’t been a problem as our bats and starters have turned in some nice performances. Keeping them these last three nights has been such an exercise in futility that this three-game losing skid feels like a ten-gamer.

I was at the game

and dang it in the the Right Field corner “Guys Night Out” section. That was a nice surprise.

The game was actually a good game between two clubs. I know this was a loss, and I’ve dogged the team when they played bat, but this really wasn’t one I’d hang my head on too much. The Bullpen let us down, but they really are showing signs of fatigue. Baker getting pulled after his errors at 2nd was…....disheartening. If he can’ t play it defensively well enough to play, it hurts our bench and backups. Nix hasn’t shown he can play ss which means Nix is the only guy that could relieve Barmes, and Barmes is the only guy that can sub for Tulo. AND we only have on Lefty hitter off the bench. I’m not liking the bench “MIX” at the moment. Francis was ok….but not dominant, cause he just doesn’t have dominant stuff.

That all said…..a spring night at the ball game….still beats about anything else.

Dbacks won…again. This divisional race may be over before Memorial Day.

What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?
