Sunday Morning Rockpile:
I missed the last two games and the NFL Draft is on now. I'm just catching up on all the comments and stories from Friday night and yesterday. If anything is link-worthy, put it in the comments.

Linkage
OK….I’ll fill in. I read the paper the old fashion way..a tree wasting hard copy in my pj’s with my coffee. Here’s some I found entertaining:
Ump doing better then I thought (I swear I thought he had died…this article made me breathe a sigh of relief)
For Renck Tulo’s and Corpas’ struggles are due more to inexperience than big off season contracts. Also in his footnotes he jumps on the Atkins is a great hitter band wagon, and Ian Stewart should be traded for a pitcher. Which the Row concluded last night’s game thread watching Redman blow up. And he notes that Ray “Burger” King was waived by the Nationals and should get a Flier as a LOGGY some where. (commentary: If he can’t play for one of the worst teams in the NL…..were can he play?)
This article was about the line up and roster moves. Nix out, Helton to the 2 hole, and Jimenez in now on a VERY short leash. Note: No replacements for Jimenez/Morales/Redman were mentioned unless you take into account Cappellan started 3 games in Col. Springs.
But my favorite: Frei blames Forsburg
Bad day for Denver Sports all around. (oh…don’t cry cause I put stuff that was non Rockies in the links)
What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?
Sorry I messed up the linkage
should be:
And Page goes Ape on Melo and the Nuggets. Seriously, the Posts big headline was the Nuggets were “Quiters”...wow.
What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?
Time for a trade?
Trades. I’m betting this is on just about everybody’s mind today, so let me throw my two cents. Long story-short….. Things have not gone at all right so far this year, but I’m not sure it’s time just yet to make a trade. Not because I think everything will be just fine either (although I reserve the right to hope). Quite the contrary. Going into this season we knew we had questions marks (like every team not named Red Sox), and we knew that the majority of those question marks would have to fall in our favor. We also knew we’d have a few surprises both good and bad, and they too would have to at least balance each other out. So here’s a quick summary of what went wrong:
1) Nix didn’t pan out. Maybe not a big deal if Barmes can continue to be a pleasant surprise and hold onto the position.
2) Hirsch got hurt and BOTH Morales and Jimenez have been pretty horrible. Add Francis’ surprise underachieving….. And we got trouble.
3) Corpas tops it off by performing far from closer standards.
4) The Arizona Diamondbacks are playing out of their freaking minds
There’s more of course (Hawpe not hitting and Tulo acting like Freddie Benavides without the bat), but that’s enough to get anyone thinking about trading for some help. My problem is this: If we get say Snell from Pittsburgh (I only say this because he’s the best of an uninspring bunch of pitchers that I’ve heard MAY be available)...... We’ve filled maybe one mid-rotation spot out of 4. But at what cost? If things don’t improve in some of those other spots, is that really enough to turn this team around in 2008? To me the answer is no, unless at least 2 of our current starting pitchers also turn things around, and maybe the diamondbacks show some sign that they’re humans.
So in my opinion: I think we have to wait a little while before deciding who we trade, and for what. If say Francis and one of the young guys turn it around/get healthy, then maybe we do send Atkins or Stewart packing in exchange for another starter and try to make a run for it. If things stay the same: We may have to start thinking about dealing Atkins at the trade deadline for a combination of potential impact youngsters that can help us next year and also rebuild our farm system a bit. Which frankly, is kind of lacking in impact starting pitchers. BTW, I’d stress this as a mid-season retooling and not a rebuilding move.
Either way, the Atkins/Stewart situation needs to be resolved this year.
My 2 Cents
Let’s assume that Francis finds his location again, and U-ball or Morales come around enough to at least fill the #5 spot. Hirsh is still an unproven commodity when he recovers from his injury, so we can’t count on him adequately filling a rotation spot. (Given the Rockies’ luck with things falling into place this year, I wouldn’t bet on it.) That leaves us with Redman and maybe Wells to fill out the rotation. While Wells has not been awful by any means, I just don’t see that you can hang playoff hopes on either of the two.
If the FO is truly trying to build a year-in-year-out contender, then it needs to address the pitching issue. And I believe they need to do it sooner than later. Mid-season may well be far too late. Frankly, I’d be talking to SF about Cain. Others have noted that they are in dire need of some players, even young ones. See what shakes out. The worst that could happen is a guffaw or two on the other end of the line.
We need some quality starts pretty quickly or the BP will be dead before June.
As for the D-backs, all we can do is hope that they return from orbit sometime soon. But, given the Rockies’ luck with things falling into place this year, well, you know.

Cain
Okay, a guy like Cain is the type of young impact pitcher even I’d throw caution to the wind and try to deal for. Problem is…. Would the Giants really trade him? Even if they do, would they deal him within the division? If so, then yeah I think we’d have the type of players to make a legit offer, and would be foolish not to at least try. Even if he is walking a tremendous number of batters this year…..
As for the wait and see thing…. I say that for two reasons. 1) Things could change (or not) and that sort of dictates the type of pitcher(s) we would be looking for and whether it’s Atkins or Stewart that go. 2) I see Atkins having more value at the trade deadline. There’s a lot of teams that are over or under achieving so far this year, and come July that should sort itself out a bit better and the ones who are still in it will be much more serious about dealing for an impact bat. I mean, consider the scenario where of the Marlins are a contending buyer in July….
cain
would he fit into the clubhouse? i dont think he likes the rockies that much, i seem to rememeber issues with him form the dugout yelling at our guys and stuff. and i seem to recall the ya bi^#H homerun was off cain in 06
Scott Podsenik for center field 08
Gnats won't trade Cain.
Unless it’s an insanely good deal for them - think 6 or 7 top prospects - otherwise, no chance. Lincecum and Cain are just about the only bright spots on that team, right now.
