Tulo on the bench tonite...

I do wonder how long this will last. I hope the games Barmes has sat out won’t affect his hot bat.

Barmes is hitting .233 in his last ten games

so his pine time is irrellevant to his “hotness.”

Lincecum on the mound won’t help matters (for any of our guys), so maybe sitting Tulo here isn’t the worst thing either.

This makes for a perfect baseball story

if tonight starts the return of Tulo. A freak injury (not good for Baker) leads to an unexpected start and a surprise breakout… This game has it’s share of quirks, and maybe for the benefit of Tulo, tonight will be one of those odd incidents.

Not trying to make light of Baker’s malady, though.

I feel bad for Bake...

Maybe he was trying to do the symbolic dunking (see: my diary) for Tulo and ran into a rock.

I think the big difference is that he’s hitting extremely well, so subesquently, he’s seen as a better defender.

But then after Iannetta’s homerun and Atkins’ mostly solid defense at 2nd (including one really nice play late in the game), I decided Hurdle must have been psychic, at least for tonight.

by Tyler Boschert on Apr 29, 2008 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

All kidding aside

Torrealba’s starting intangibles have failed and it’s time for him to have a seat more often.

His role was to mentor the young Latin hurlers and bring them along. One has lost his job as the closer, another has been sent to AAA, a third is about to go to the bullpen…

It’s not that intangibles don’t exist, it’s that their contributions pale when held up against staggering tangible beneifts.

Iannetta’s providing offense we sorely need, and he really isn’t worse defensively.

Also I think the injury to Tulo is real bad from what it looks like. Muscle pulls can take forever to come back from, and a quad pull would be real bad news.

It's a mere opinion

and one that has merit, statistically.

When the only retort to such posts is to answer smarmily about a broad theme without any concrete counterpoints or alternative suggestions, it hints at a lack of insight…

by David OhNo on Apr 29, 2008 9:41 PM MDT up reply actions

Or, perhaps

It hits at a lack of patience for repetitive arguments. I’m fine with Iannetta playing. Really. I think he should play more. Really. Yorvit was also the starter on the team that went to the World Series last year. Really. Iannetta was not a real contributor to that team. Forgive me for refusing to bang endlessly on a guy that, while not special, hardly is the reason for the failures of this team this year, and who was-whether you can find statistical evidence for it or not-a huge part of the best season in this team’s history last year. But please, proceed.

I do like the use of “smarmily” though.

by Teekalong on Apr 29, 2008 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I had to dictionary.com smarmily

to make sure it would work…

I don’t deny Torrealba’s contributions to the Wrold Series run and thank him for that. However, I think you can make a case for Torrealba being one of the problems this year.

With so many offensive holes at short, second (save for Clint’s two week run), center, and right and first to a degree, they have to find a way to find any offensive output that represents a net gain. Yorvit’s sub .300 OBP and middling average isn’t helping matters, but Iannetta’s line stats are amongst the best on the team. Could plus .050 in all three line stats make an improvement in the game to game offensive output? I would think so (again assuming he continues to produce). I think the Rockies are leaving some offense on the table when they don’t play Iannetta every day, and for that, I place blame on Hurdle for continuing to start Torrealba. I could only blame Torrealba if I expected him to contribute more, and I don’t, so the onus falls on Hurdle to make the change.

by David OhNo on Apr 29, 2008 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

I used

Smarmily in a work email recently, and nobody got it. I was, needless to say, upset.

In any case, I dig what you’re saying and I agree in principle, and I certainly agree that we cannot afford to leave any offense on the table right now. I just think that if certain other guys were even coming close to pulling their weight, the team would be in a much better way right now regardless of Yorvit. And asking CI to pull more than his share isn’t going to right the ship, I’m afraid. But plaing him more is part of the solution.

Just because it is fun to think about

There is a very reasonable scenario where both Lincecum and Haren are pitching for the Rockies this year, with the rest of the ML roster basically intact.

I know hindsight, 20-20, etc., but still. How would that feel to have Francis 3, Cook 4?

Despite our hitting woes, the season would look much different.

by Roberbola on Apr 29, 2008 9:37 PM MDT reply actions

Brian Sabean may be on crack, but I don’t see him trading Lincecum to a division rival at pretty much any price. And Beane would have made sure he took our farm system with him.

Salazar is a decent player...

but, really, how much would he play here? He’s certainly not the player Spilborghs is. The Rox gambled and lost trying to sneak him through waivers last year, but it was no great loss. He had a big pinch homer to win a game in August and made one highlight-reel catch, but Sullivan (remember him?) helped the Rockies a lot, too.

The guy they lost on waivers the year before, Justin Hampson, was a bigger blunder. Young, reliable lefty relievers are hard to find…and far prferable to the Micah Bowies of the world.

Call ups

OK, let’s figure this out:

Morales – demoted
Wells – DL
Tulo – Probably DL
Baker – maybe DL

That would mean we need a sterter, a reliever and two infielders.

Towers is the starter. Quintanilla is one of the IFers. The other two are where it gets interesting.

The only reliever on the Sky Sox who’s on the 40 man is Morillo, and he’s been getting lit up. Veteran guys like del los Santos and Zambrano have also been ineffective. So maybe you have to add a young guy to the 40 man and give him a shot. Register? Arias? Daley? Sean Smith? Finish the Ramirez deal and take de la Rosa and bring him up?

As for the other infielder – who knows? If not Nix, is it Herrera? Do you pull Wimberly up from Tulsa for a look? Anyone got Marcus Giles’ phone number?

Should be, at least , interesting.

Haha

I was happy to see Hansbrough come back. Love watching that guy play, and since I have my title and no repeat aspirations (our roster got rocked by the NBA, even if Chalmers comes back), I might be secretly pulling for Psycho T to get his.

And let’s be honest. EVERYONE was a problem in that game.

Don't get too excited

It’s been a long, long time since we won one that Cook didn’t start. Tonight was just holding up trends.

Awesome attitude.

I like that. Like how everytime we get into extra innings at least one of us starts thinking aloud “Paging Brent Mayne…”

This’ll be the Atkins at 2nd game. Cool memories.

by A.J. Haefele on Apr 29, 2008 11:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Memorable game

but one that’s potentially significant in impacting the season. Tomorrow’s aftermath should be something to watch. Does Tulo need a DL stint? Will the Rockies recall an infielder in his stead? Does that chain reaction impact the bullpen/rotation?

Tonight was fun, but tomorrow will be just as interesting from a transaction standpoint.

Iannetta plays third, hits a HR and a double

Atkins is a gold glove second baseman. We win. Go figure. It would be awfully nice to do it tomorrow.

by Silverblood on Apr 29, 2008 11:09 PM MDT up reply actions

So what have we learned here to night?

1) Atkins can play 2nd
2) Iannetta can hit
3) giants have as much hard luck/stupid plays as we do

Cool

Considering the odds stacked against us, a nice win.

If necessity is the mother of invention...

any chance tonight’s odd lineup could actually provide some long-range hope at 2B? Atkins looked pretty good on a number of plays…but maybe it was just the spirit of this wacky game that took over.

by moose14 on Apr 29, 2008 11:11 PM MDT reply actions

Why not?

We don’t have to throw him in right away, but why not start having him take grounders at 2B, play there every now and then, and see if it works? Plus, it solves the Atkins/Stewart conundrum.

Things I would like to see

regardless of their chances of happening:

- Tulo hurt just enough to have to sit down and get his head cleared out (1-2 weeks) but not badly enough to be gone for a significant amount of time.
- Stewart called up to play 3rd with Atkins at 2nd, since I dunno about you, but Stewart/Barmes/Atkins/Helton looks a helluva lot better than Atkins/Barmes/Q/Helton.
- An actual pitcher, because calling up Josh Towers and Greg Reynolds will be exactly like having Redman and Jimenez in there. Coincidentally.
- Since Corpas, Jimenez, and Morales have all hit walls, and Yorvit’s “mentoring” of them is frequently cited for keeping him in the lineup, can Iannetta PLEASE PLEASE play now? (Of course, this will never happen, no matter how much we ask for it).
—A flipping win tomorrow.

Don't knock ESPN!

Clearly they are trying to help us by infusing us with the Dbacks’ mojo, so it’s really all thanks to them we won! I mean, why would they know who we are? We’ve been bad for years, we toil in the NL Worst, we have no good players, we’ve never won an NL pennant with one of the greatest streaks in baseball history….

Wait.

Never mind.

Jayson Nix is on the All Star Ballot for 2nd Base

IF & that’s a big, IF he is picked to play 2nd in the All Star game, who do you think will play in his spot since we designated him to the springs(if he clears waivers—or whatever happens now that Tulo & Baker are injured)?

"Baseball is what gets inside you. It's what lights you up, you can't deny that. It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great." -Jimmy Dougan (Tom Hanks) "A League of Their Own"

Chris Iannetta

Nice game for the erstwhile catcher of the future. I have him on my fantasy team along with Ryan Doumit, and I’m trying to swing a trade. I think Iannetta is the better talent, but if he’s going to stay the backup, I don’t want him. Rotoworld says he could be playing his way into the starting role; what do you guys think the odds of that happening are, and how soon?

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Apr 30, 2008 12:54 AM MDT reply actions

I think he's playing

his way into playing a few more days a week. Torrealba has struggled both at the plate and as a catcher, and to me is looking a little beat up. I see a more 50/50 split happening. Hurdle really likes Yorviet for some reason.

But Iannetta seems to be coming into his own. He looks confident, and he’s making good contact when he bats.
