Rox trade for Jason Grilli

malakian pointed out this link in today's game thread. The Rockies traded right hand relief prospect and 2005 second round draft choice Zach Simons to the Tigers to get Grilli.

Jorge de la Rosa also officially acquired as the Ramirez PTBNL

He’ll start on Saturday.

The Rockies also receive cash (about $200,000) from Kansas City. The Royals also will receive a player to be determined, who is tied to how de la Rosa pitches with the Rockies.

Ringolsby with details.

Grilli

Low-risk pickup (Simons has kinda stalled as a prospect, even in the bullpen) for a fungible middle reliever. Sometimes these guys become ‘07 Matt Herges… sometimes they become ‘04 Todd Jones.

The SBN Tigers blog is doing backflips over getting rid of the guy, FWIW.

Also

And when Grilli comes into the game, I demand the Coors Field music operators play “Grillz” by Nelly and Paul Wall. Or “Grill ‘Em” by J.R. Writer. Maybe Grilli’s not a rap fan, but in this case I hardly think it’s relevant.

If he's the Tigers punching bag,

he should fight right in here.

I said it in the game thread

but one of my good friends is a big Tigers fan, and he sent me about 5 taunting emails about this deal. He, without exaggeration, really hates Grilli. We should stop trading relievers to the Tigers.

I don't watch Tigers games

but Grilli’s numbers don’t completely suck. In fact, what little I recall of him is he’s a hard thrower, and he strikes out about one an inning. Eh….he’s an arm for the pen

What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?

The league switch should help him a bit too.

It will take a little while for NL teams to catch on, hopefully.

Of course

the Orioles also did backflips when we took Rodrigo Lopez off their hands.

The only part of this trade that bothers me

is how did Simons become our 2nd round pick? A disposable minor league reliever….2nd round draft pick.

Simons was drafted with the intention he'd be a starter

He crashed and burned in that role his first two seasons, with a significant drop in velocity from what the scouting reports said he could throw. After moving to the pen, he got it back, but his value obviously plummeted.

Thanks

I really appreciate the opinions/knowledge you and several other have about our minor league system. I knew I could throw this question out, and get a knowledgeable answer.

Garrett Atkins for 2nd ! Ian Stewart for 3rd !

Busts happen, anyway

If picks were guaranteed to pan out the way we expected, there would be little need to draft players after the second round. The only strange thing with Simons is that he was exposed so early, though the same thing has happened with Christensen, our second round pick in 2006 (?)

In any case, look at the 2000 draft, where we never signed our first-round pick, our second-round pick was little more than a AAAA pitcher, and the third- and fourth-round picks did nothing; but the fifth-round pick (Garrett Atkins) became our starting 3B and the eleventh-round pick (Brad Hawpe) became our starting RF.

And, of course, our 30th-round pick in the 2000 draft is now in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring. But he never signed with us anyway.
