Game #4: Owings vs. Redman
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, Apr 4, 2008 2:05 PM MDT
Time for the offense to come alive, and what better day for that to happen than today? It's the home opener; it's the day we've been waiting months for; it's the day Mark Redman goes out and throws a gem. Well, that last one we'll need to wait on.
Go Rockies!

What we need is a good old fashioned snake stomping.
I have a wager with the Snakepit on the outcome of this series. The Rockies better do more than Rodrigo did last year to make Purple Row the winner, here.
Aw
I came over from the Snakepit to say I hope we have a good series, and you guys are planning Whacking Day. I'm (melodramatically) heartbroken.
Really, though, I'm looking forward to seeing the Rockies this season. Here's hoping for a good season series, and the general collapse of every NL team in California!
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"
Really, I think it will be a great series too
I like having a real rival, it adds a level to my Rockies fandom that was lacking for awhile.
Of course,
Understand that I realize our previous lack of rivalries had mostly to do with our own ineptitude.
Well, yeah...
You can only display that level of ineptitude and still have deep-seated rivalries if you're the Cubs, I think.
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"
Starting lineups
Drum roll please...
Them
Young cf
Burke 1b (what the hell?)
Hudson 2b
Byrnes lf
Snyder c
Reynolds 3b
Upton rf
Drew ss
Owings p
Us
Taveras cf
Tulo ss
Helton 1b
Holliday lf
Atkins 3b
Hawpe rf
Torrealba c
Nix 2b
Redman p
Seriously... with that lineup, Owings should be hitting in the 3-hole.
I think this could be
a slugfest today if both offenses can get off the snide.
As a Diamondbacks fan, I find your over-estimation of our offense to be both bizarre and heart-warming.
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"
You just got one-hit by a guy making his his big-league debut. Don't be bragging about your offense. I personally think Owings should hit cleanup.
Every day is a Holliday!
What I think he's saying
Is that we're over-estimating the D-backs offense by thinking it'll be a slugfest, not bragging about it.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
you realize that he wasn't bragging
"overestimation" means something far different than "underestimation"
Wait, So
I shouldn't have just tried to claim Cueto in all my fantasy leagues?
I actually think you've made a good gamble there
Part of his dominance yesterday had to do with the team he was facing, but a lot of it was inate talent. I hate to say this, but I think he might be a better rookie pitcher than Frankie Mo.
I am in cold and cloudy New York
My sister is standing in a blue-skied, sunny Coors right this moment with her Baseball is Back sign, sending me pictures. It is the best I will get.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
ooh! does this mean we might get actual game fanshots?
I hope so. I'm taking my little camera to McCormick Field when I see our minor leaguers in a little more than a week, but I was hoping we'd get at least a couple of pics of the big leaguers beforehand.
Well, her cell phone camera
isn't that good, and I can mainly tell what they are because I know Coors so well. Possibly.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
rats,
sounds like my World Series pics. Just because I know that little fuzzy blur is Matt Holliday doesn't mean the picture's worth posting.
:)
I'm pestering her for more
If she gets something good, I'll put it up.

Let's try this

Click 'start download' and then 'open in Quicktime' or whatever. It's a short 10-second vid of the guys warming up (Atkins throws a few times) and you can hear someone saying, "JAYSON!" Sister sent it, of course.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Oh, man
Still no gameday thread at the Snakepit, so I'm loitering here. And since I'm on FSN Rocky Mountain, I think more of you will understand my complaint when I say: Really? Nickelback? Can't they give us anything better before player introductions?
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"
At least you don't have
George Frazier.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
And you changed your name
But I know you, correct? You're Devin... I think.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Yup, that's me
Someone had already claimed Devin by the time I registered, so I was forced to assume a new identity.
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"
Yeah, this has been discussed ad nauseum
It seems like if you put the word "rock" in a pop song and you're pretty much guaranteed some clip will be played at Coors Field.
Oh man
I have a 10-page poli-sci essay midterm to do this weekend. Why, professor, why? I already doubt I will get much done... maybe tonight after the game's over.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
And then only if they win?
I find my ability to get work done is directly correlated with the Rockies' run differential game by game.
Now that I say that though...
when they win I usually watch highlights and read coverage online and then wait to see if ESPN gives it proper treatment...so really, my ability to get work done is entirely contingent on whether or not there's a Rockies game on...so, sorry Prof, no homework for the next 12 days.
I am so glad I am out of school, mostly
Or I'd be in the exact same boat. As it is, trying to justify the sudden lack of productivity in my straight gig is hard enough.
Rockies home opener and
a new season of Battlestar Galactica today. Rockies better win this one, since Galactica is already a win.

from my sister's seat! A beautiful Coors with player introductions going on -- you can see the D-backs since she's on the third-base side. Same process to open it as last one.

Excellent. That's beautiful and it makes me feel almost there.
I'm glad her sign is there. After what happened last season, I consider it a good luck charm. I'm just glad I don't view starting the season with Steve Finley on the roster the same way.
Well, we lost the home opener against the D-backs
last year with the sign there, but I guess the long-term results made it worth it.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Atkins/Hawpe
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious - but why don't we put Hawpe 5th and Atkins 6th to have a left/right/left/right in the heart of the lineup (to force opposing manager to waste an extra reliever if they want to play the "matchup" game)? Granted, Atkins hits righties and lefties about the same over his career, but some managers might not know that.
I'm glad that Helton and Holliday swapped place in the lineup. I like having the OBP monster at 3 and the power guy at 4.
Was that the sign?

I imagine that can't make you feel optimistic, despite his success against All-Star Mark Redman so far today.
I'm not worried!

Come on Tulo.

Do not get called out looking, Tulo. Can somebody PLEASE score a run for us? ANYONE?

Wasting the leadoff man.
That's what we should see out of the D'Backs.

Um?
Going back home has done nothing for the bats. Leadoff double and only one of them even puts it in play.
Sheez, we suck right now.

Every year
I hope that we shore up our Team LOB numbers, and every year I end up disapointed.
If Tulo and Holliday aren't hitting
And the last three games they haven't been, we're going nowhere. Obviously, they're going to turn it around, but the sooner the better if they are really serious about returning to the WS anytime soon.
Owings
better at hitting than the meat of order right now
The hitters will hit
they are all pressing to get off to good starts.
The pitching rotation is a big issue. I see too many deep counts, pitch counts and too few innings out of these guys. They are going to have to make a deal at some point or be buried. The bullpen cannot be expected to pitch 4+ every day or it will collapse.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 4, 2008 2:44 PM MDT reply actions
I agree, I still see this as the big issue
It's just frustrating that the hitters aren't hitting thus far, which makes all the other issues that much harder to bear.
If this is another
three-hit shutout through five innings, I'm going to do some pistolwhipping.

I think Tulo probably felt bad for being credited the unfair out
In the prior inning. See, it was actually a noble act of sportsmanship beyond our mortal understanding. Tulo remains a deity.
I am impressed
Obviously, a deity of Fair Play and Sportsmanship.

Your 2008 Colorado Rockies:

Not a bad swing on that one
Redman got better lumber on the ball than anybody so far except Willy T.
That was pretty nice
Maybe both teams should stop running their position players up there, and just let the pitchers slug it out. It'll be like the Bizarro American League.

Dear Rockies,
I would be ever so pleased if you would play like the 2007 Rockies. In fact, at this point I would settle for the 2005 vintage.
They're very lucky...
they aren't getting no-hit today. For that matter, they're lucky it's not a perfect game.
I'm OK with teams getting off to a slow start, but to come out on opening day as NL Champs against Micah Freaking Owings and do this -- we'll , "inexcusable" isn't quite strong enough to describe it.
Not to beat the dead horse,
But on the season, we're currently the lowest scoring team in the Major Leagues.
Redman actually hasn't been that bad
Run support would help, though. I wonder if our guys actually thought they could score no runs with Redman pitching and win.
OK, that's it....
I'm checking out. Too nice a day to waste inside watching this nonsense.
Be back tomorrow, and I'll pretend none of this ever happened.
Redman's got to be out soon.

Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Didn't you say something about a Tunguska event?
But then again, right after that, the Rockies did go on the September streak.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Yeah, but when I wrote that
I didn't seriously believe they'd do that.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
Well, Yorvit's up, like you said
So it doesn't matter. We don't seriously expect him to do anything anyway.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
I actually think Qualls is Yorvi's type of pitcher
Of course, having said that, I fully expect misery.
Four-pitch K
We knew ST couldn't last.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
At least a week of easing back in would have been nice
Nope. They want to give us cruel brutal reality right away.
I want a do-over
Seriously, how low (and long) is this going to go?
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
I've....had just about enough of this.
Drown my sorrows in some orange chicken. Later y'all.
Why am I still watching this?
Honestly? Why? Why?
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
I wonder, if when I'm being brutally strangled
at the ripe age of seventy while my assailant is posting the video on the Internet, if I will be as enthralled in my own demise as I seem to be with the Rockies right now.
Looking at the lineup's BAs
Those are some uggggggly numbers after 3.5 games.

I want last year's Opening Day loss
We scored 6 runs in last year's Opening Day loss.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
And I want one of those
magical six-run home runs to win the game in the ninth, but that's not going to happen.
"Don't give up the ship!" - Capt. James Lawrence
I just want..
a couple of hits....in a row...by the ROCKIES.

I am doing the same thing
I want to get away from this misery but I am still here. I seriously just went to the Snakepit to plead for them to call off the dogs.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
No pleading!
We will want them to take the beating we're going to give tomorrow in the same kind of silence. It's just the way we do things out West.
Beating?
That would entail scoring runs. Wherever did you get such a peculiar notion?
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Leviticus.
Or maybe it was the Ramayana, but the ancients really believed such things were possible, I'm sure of it.
But I wonder...
will Buchholz now be hitting for himself?

That is a sad commentary

Here until the bitter end of this game.
Come on, it hasn't been hard for any of you to make an out today.

Sadly, I have to concede that this isn't something scholars
acknowledge, the phenomenon's more of a mystical interpretation of texts that may have been misrepresented or even fabricated.

Going tomorrow...
better get a good night's rest and try to forget this one!

Just got back from the game
Worst Rockies performance in memory
just got home
my gosh what a disaster... it looks like hurdle is off to his old ways.
have we ever come out of spring training ready for the season? EVER?
hurdles has made many mistakes already this season. why didnt he double switch herges in the 6th? maybe put innanetta in? maybe an iannetta with a hot bat would do well for these guys. he wasted an at bat and essentially an inning by that inning. thats fine that he wants to give herges another inning but think ahead. Redman needs to be off this team by may 1 or we will not make the playoffs
hop on the rockies roller coaster
Brutal game today
It just wasn't how a home opener is supposed to be. They announced after the game that it was the largest regular season attendance ever, but unfortunately for us 49,000+ in the stands, there wasn't a lot to cheer about. I think the loudest cheers came after Willy T's great over the shoulder catch early in the game. Redman's outing was brutal, of course, and the Rockies might as well have left their bats in St Louis.
I did enjoy the heckling of Byrnes that went on throughout the game though. I was sitting in the left field club area, and when Byrnes came out for the bottom of the first he was really getting heckled by the crowd in the area. It looked to me like he was jarring right back at the crowd some too, and after Tulo struck out in that same inning he kind of shook his finger at the crowd as if to say "I don't think so". His comments last year were foolish and desperate, but I think it really ignited a rivalry between two of the NL's best young teams, and it's something Rockies fans will never let Byrnes hear the end of.
I'll be at the banner raising tomorrow, and I really hope the bats can find a way to get something going. Getting Morales some early runs would be a big boost for his confidence I think.
"Corpas ready, first pitch, checkswing roller...Tulowitzki has it, throws to first...BALLGAME! WORLD SERIES TIME IN COLORADO!"
what a joke
two of the NL's best young teams,????????????? the way we are playing it doesnt look good they better start hitting tommrow.
hurdle mistake counter: 4
Francis vs Webb tomorrow?
According to the Rockies official site - I hadn't heard anything official that Francis would get the start over Morales. Same rules on scoring still apply though of course.
Oh, and Squeaky's baseball is back sign is featured as a picture on the Rockies official site - #3 in the top story area.
"Corpas ready, first pitch, checkswing roller...Tulowitzki has it, throws to first...BALLGAME! WORLD SERIES TIME IN COLORADO!"
why in heck
would hurdle pitch francis???? morales needs a start to keep freash. plus i think after francis distorious outing he will need the extra rest to prepare for sunday. we got webb then haren... then the braves we never hit the braves. when can we start scoring runs?
if francis pitches tommrow it will go up on my hurdle mistake counter. unless he pitches a no no
hurdle mistake counter: 4
which
i just realized he wont now cause i said that sorry guys.. but the way we are hitting it doesnt matter what he does
hurdle mistake counter: 4
ok im now im bored
espn..... is reportin francis is starting tommrow... why not pitch francis sunday everybody on the west side of the planet knows franics is a great day game pticher and is tough to beat in day games. how bout it hurdle?
hurdle mistake counter: 4
Francis and Morales
Are just switching days. Morales is pitching Sunday against (I think) Edgar Gonzalez. It's no big deal to me, Hurdle probably just wanted to match up Francis against Webb.
Every day is a Holliday!
No
they talked about this earlier this week in the paper I think. Pitching Francis tomorrow allows Jeff to stay on regular rest. It's my understanding that this was the plan before the rainout, that Jeff would throw Monday, and then again Saturday to keep him on schedule, with Morales going through his off-day work to prep for Sunday.
Ugh
Lame festivities. Lame game. I feel completely ripped off. Urk. Ridunkalous.
Contracting a BAD case of senioritis...
Schadenfreude?
Hawkins gave up 6 runs to the Devil Rays while recording only 2 outs. So maybe if we got their crappy pitcher, they got ours?
Yeah, that's all I got. This game just needs to go away forever.
