Game #5: Francis vs Webb
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, Apr 5, 2008 6:05 PM MDT
Nothing like getting a fluffball pitcher like Brandon Webb to break us out of our slump. Please, oh please, hit against him like you did most of last season, guys.

Night game
It is.
Made me do a double take as well.
Peavy vs Penny on Fox right now though.
Lucky
I get Chicago (A) versus Detroit

It was up early because I was having issues
trying to figure out how I messed up setting it for automatic posting, and I just wanted to make absolutely certain it would be up before game time. Luckily, it was, but as you point out, quite a bit earlier than normal.
It should be really nice...
It's been sunny up in the mountains, at least (Thank god).

Really?
I thought it was still two hours...
I'm stoked because I just found out I get a free preview of MLB Extra Innings this week.
Peavy
with a CG two-hitter.
Meanwhile, it's horrible but watching the Detroit game is oddly comforting. Incredible line-up, but nothing but fail so far for the team as a whole.
Ugh
I'm always glad to see the Dodgers lose, but I think I'd rather see Peavy get knocked around.
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*

I am fine
I have Peavy in a (different) fantasy League :D
1:14 left till game (I was right the first time, I just cant do math LOL)

Atkins/Hawpe
Switcheroo in today's line-up.
Sounds good to me.
Holliday
Hit 6 balls into the upper deck in BP. He's a righty. Think about that.
If Webb's dumb enough to hit him with a pitch, he might hit a ball to Kansas.
Every day is a Holliday!
Oh Webb
The first time Holliday is up there, please bean him. Make it sting.
(I think this is the first time I have ever rooted for one of my guys to be hit before).
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Not even in Little League?
I was always rooting for the kids that couldn't hit to get beaned.
Every day is a Holliday!
I've never been involved with Little League
but yes. Actually... that's not quite true. If Holliday is less than his usual manbeastly self, I kind of root for some unsuspecting yahoo to bounce one off his treetrunk upper arm and see what happens next.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Not to Kansas
How about he hits it to Missouri so I can get it :D

Also, props to Riordan
who was nothing short of brilliant in his seven inning, three hit, shutout.
So while our big leaguers and high minor pitchers took their lumps in opening week, it's nice to see a young talent step up and impress in his debut.
Oh come on
Don't we get more than one straight year of being good???

Lately, that would have been
a point of concern. However, he's flat crushing the ball out of the gate, and hopefully this power is sustainable. A small bright spot to opening week has been Helton playing like Helton of four-five years ago.
WHOOO HOOO

Argh.... Darron Sutton jinxed it.
On FoxSportsAZ, they showed the replay of yesterday's homer not 5 seconds before he hit it out again.

Don't feel bad
That's likely the only one we get.

You're very modest.
I'll hold you to that one.

Fair 'nuff.

Bad luck
for Matt. If Webb's glove didn't get in the way of the ball that would have been a hit yup the middle.

At least
Matty didn't strike out...that's an improvement. and he squared up the ball up the middle...that's a really good sign

Let's just hope
it's a better game than the first one. Not what I was expecting at all.
2007 National League Champions, baby!
So true.
Collison is a complete headcase, and UCLA ignored Love in the second half. PsychoT scares the bajeezus outta me. He was intense taking his warmups off.
He's a bit of a freak
But I love him anyway. Rush scares me to death. Not cause he's weird. He's just soooooo damn good!
2007 National League Champions, baby!
Rush is insanely overrated
imo. The glue to KU is Mario Chalmers. That guy is made of ice. Rush, when he isn't on, is very, very average. Chalmers is my guy, heh.
Yeah
Chalmers worries me. But with Rush, IF he's on, he presents a BIGGG problem for my guys.
2007 National League Champions, baby!
Plus
there's no way defend Ellington. His range is too deep. At least we can be cordial about our respective teams. And agree about Rush if he's on, it just seems to be so sporadic, that I never count on it anymore.
I'm in same boat
With Danny Green - if on, great. If not, I have to hide my eyes. Good luck! Hoping for a good one!
2007 National League Champions, baby!

Um Francis??
What the frak is with these leadoff homers?
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Yet
we're now 9 for 9 on the season in solo homers.
I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do.
D'Back fans
is Upton in layers or has he really filled out since last season? He's becoming an animal a little too quick for my liking.
He's only 20
so at least it's sorta believable that he could "fill out" over an offseason. Not like a 35-year-old suddenly getting jacked.
I'm not questioning it
I think Justin's a freak, I'm just surprised it's taken so quickly.
Nah. It's the 'roids. :-P
I saw him in person a few times last year, and he doesn't really look any bigger to me, if at all. Couldn't tell you, though.
I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do.
Francis
Left that one in the middle of the plate. Unlike Young's homer that was a good pitch that he just hit out of the park, that was a mistake to Upton.
Every day is a Holliday!
Love the Taco Bell promo
If the Rockies score 7 runs....you get 4 tacos for $1 the following day between 4-7
What am going to do with all these "Jeff Baker for 2nd" bumper stickers?
They mean
over a series or a week, right? Cuz there ain't no way they mean in a game.

That was a good attempt to turn
by Atkins. Quick release, ball up and in front allowing Nix to come over the bag. It's just a hard turn in general.
I hope
that we NEVER stop booing Eric Byrnes.
As Jim was pointing out,
it's always amusing to hear the Rox fans rooting for Stephen Drew everytime Byrnes comes to bat.
I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do.
Not that I needed an excuse on Saturday night
but this is driving me to drink
That wasn't too bad
Just as long as Francis kicks this HR habit.

The best investment an out-of-town fan (like me) could ever make. Don't listen to it when the Rockies are in St. Louis, though--I found out that Mike Shannon is a God-awful broadcaster the hard way.

1 run, 2 hits for us last night
2 runs, 2 hits for us tonight. And we were getting all excited...
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Yeah, but the D-Backs scored last inning.
I think that means we are required to turn one hit, one walk, and one Mark Reynolds throwing error into precisely one run this inning.
So what should I do about..
My kids tball team being called the Red Sox?
A. Boycott the game
B. Yell at the coach and get kicked out of the league
C. Dress the boys in Rockies gear anyway
D. Dress them in Red Sox, Show up but proudly wear my Rockies cap
There's only one Rocktober!!
If you do D...
Are you allowed to call the other parents in Red Sox hats bad names?
Contracting a BAD case of senioritis...
I pick option E.
Put them on a different team.
If that doesn't work, Option B. You can always come back next year, and your kids will respect you.

Francis leavens
the cloud of FAIL over his head. Somewhat.
And hey look, that exceeds our hit quorum from last night.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
That means we have no more for tonight
If we do, a lightning strike will destroy the stadium.
Contracting a BAD case of senioritis...
Willy
is such a flawed baseball player for coors. Dexter cannot get here soon enough
I'm not sure
EJ Jr is much better of a hitter
Really?
His outfield defense last year was one of the reasons we took a leap forward last year.
I'll agree he's flawed as a hitter, and miscast as a leadoff one, but that doesn't make him a poor fit for this ballpark.
Mmm...
I don't know if I'd rate Willy's defense that highly (other than The Catch in NLCS Game 2, of course).
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 5, 2008 7:30 PM MDT up reply actions
He's a statistically superior defender
than anyone we've had. The fact that he doesn't take as clean as routes or sometimes gets turned around doesn't take away from the fact he makes a ton of outs in center. Defense, especially outfield defense, isn't about beauty, it's about outs. The more you make on balls hit in your region, the better you are.
I know the fielding metrics love him
but I think Willy looks awkward out there
I think he's a solid fielder,
But he can't hit leadoff, not enough contact IMO.
There's only one Rocktober!!
It's the walk rate I worry about
but I think it also stems from the fact that teams need not fear pitching around him.
I love Dex as much as the next person, but he needs to add some pop to his game or he'll suffer the same fate.
Oy
Willy.

Tulo
Do not swing at the first pitch.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Dude. Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
For those of us who believe in jinxing a team by talking about it, if Kansas loses, I'm going to have a public meltdown.
Yoy Tulo
This is reminiscent of last year. Get over the hump, come on.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
And now we're past
being able to score when they do.
I think I know how this one ends.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
A loss is a loss
Embarrassing or otherwise. And our offensive display continues to be... offensive.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
We fail to score.
And suddenly it's the sixth inning.
*Sigh*
Three hits

Hey, 6th inning means closer to PH...

There's only one Rocktober!!
I am already very tired of Upton
He can go away any time now.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Francis may get out of here with only 3 runs in 6 innings
but too many hits...way too many
Wow a hit, really?
On a ball fielded than dropped. I can understand a dive and miss, but that wasn't on the high end of the difficulty scale.
No, Atkins dropped the ball
prior to that situation.
I got ya
if we just make that play, we have three outs before Young even steps up to the plate. Score it an error, and Francis isn't charged with earned runs (though he deserves them).
We aren't doing the little things or the big things thus far this year.
Yeah
So our terrible starting pitching continues
Ugh good lord
Again.
We're doomed, seeing as there's no way we're scoring five runs.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Faith, people. FAITH!
All we need is a little LoDo magic! This can be done!
Okay, so I don't really believe that, but still...
You never know when the teams going to figure it out...
It could be in September, or the bottom of the 6th inning.
There's only one Rocktober!!
Precisely.
I mean, it's not like we're 18-27. Everybody KNOWS you're dead in the water when that happens.

That they are a much better team then what they're showing this week. Just remember, we'll be there when they figure it out.
There's only one Rocktober!!
And....
that's our FIRST homer of the year that wasn't a solo shot...
I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do.

I thought so too, and I'm an unbiased source....
I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do.

I agree
Hawpe should have at least tagged. Atkins could have made it if he was tagging, but I understand running with him there because he scores and narrows the lead to one if that ball gets down.

...as anybody who's sat through every agonizing pitch of 15+ years of Rockies baseball can be, I imagine.

Hah.
"Cherry." The Rockies can't hit, and I can't spell.

A world of fail, tonight.
A wise woman once told me, "this is beyond all words of fail."
Tough at argue, really.
The Rox...
look like an expansion team right now. And a bad one at that.
They're awful in every aspect of the game. For god sakes, they can't even get down a sac bunt at this point.
It's as if they just skipped spring training.
Seriously
How in hell can a team with this much talent look this awful right now?
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Ask the Colorado Rockies of April 3-May 21, 2007 that question. They'll have an answer.

It's like 1993 all over again.
Fans coming out the wazoo, possessed of an unjustified love affair with an unwatchable on-field product.
Oh great
Young again.

Bases loaded
for everyone's favorite D-back.

I always said I'd never shut a baseball game off early.
Because anything can happen.
I did it Wednesday, and I'm about ready to do it again. This is nightmarish.
And just think--we've probably got it good compared to Tigers fans...
Yep.. all those "experts picking the Tigers"
Wonder how confident they are feeling atm....
All the best Brits support the Diamondbacks!
About as good as I feel, probably.
Actually, no. I am confident in saying that I feel much worse.
Is it just me, or did I feel WAY better the last time Byrnes grounded to Tulowitzki with two out (10-15-2007)?
by Tyler Boschert on Apr 5, 2008 9:02 PM MDT up reply actions
Probably thinking what I am.
This a really long season. We're still in spring, albeit late spring. Does this suck? Definitely. Could it be worse?
Uh, yeah. Let's all chill out.
If Byrnes had hit a grand slam
I honestly think I would have thrown my beloved laptop out the window.

Theres always tomorrow...
I'd back up important files. just in case :)

Byrnes?
Eric hit a grand slam? No total way. It's bases loaded, 2 out -- his only options are to strike out or get thrown out.
It's like living with a six-year old.

Question:
How many games before we stop saying, "It's still early."
I say 9. If we don't pick it up by game 9, then we'll start talking about management issues and all that.
I say 30 games.
A seemingly arbitrary number, but it's nice and round, and by then we've been in the season for several weeks.
Just a reminder:
I just deleted a comment here. Do not personally attack anyone, that includes members of the media. And watch the language.

Oh great
Time for Lyon to dominate us as he hasn't everyone else and end this.

Ahahahahah
Barmes.

BARMES: 3B
Well, that's a start.
How's that collarbone feel, Clint?
Wow
Wasn't that Barmes's first AB? Still untainted by the suckiness.
Triple with no outs
How do we fail to score at least one run?

Called out looking. Sky blue.

In Game 3 of the WS...
...Hawpe led off the Rockies' ninth with a 3B off Papelbon. Hopefully, this game goes better than that one did.
Taveras: K (backwards)
Like I said--we're the Rockies. We are MADE of pure, uncut, 100% Grade A FAIL.
Yep
Guy on third. Two quick outs.
I hate this team. Seriously. At least right now I do.

Well, that does it.
Leadoff triple. No runs. Ballgame.
GOD, do I hate the Rockies...
Our #6 pitcher tomorrow I think
Gonzalez vs Morales, advantage Rockies I think

I hate
life.
I just feel wretched right now.

Is there actually such a substance as vitriol?
Because I think I can taste it in my mouth right now.
Okay
Now I know that the baseball gods just want to see us suffer.
This team better come back and make me thankful that the season's so long. And a box of chocolates would be nice. I'm not really in a forgiving mood right now.
Does anyone know...
where/how I could obtain a recording of Jeff and Jack on the playoff game against the Pads? Listening to that might pick me up a tad...
I am seriously going to cry
I am already so sick of this.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?
Well, then
This is certainly shaping up to be the worst weekend in my adult life. Carolina gets smeared, Rockies look like a AA team playing the big boys. I wasted $150 on the lamest Opening Day ever, AND the thistle in my side yard is making a strong comeback, regardless of how much I'm pay TruGreen to kill it.
No happy camper here. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
For the moment, I'm left with no choice but to take the Scarlett O'Hara route: "Tomorrow is another day."
I hope.
2007 National League Champions, baby!
