Went digging into the quotes box last night for something to make me feel better about our Rockies and the week that was. Thought I’d share some of my favorites with the Row. I feel better already. Hope the same for all of you.
Got a favorite baseball quote? Post it here as a source of inspiration or a good chuckle for all to enjoy!
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. ~A. Bartlett Giamatti
Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off. ~Bill Veeck
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver
I was such a dangerous hitter I even got intentional walks in batting practice. ~Casey Stengel
Baseball is not necessarily an obsessive-compulsive disorder, like washing your hands 100 times a day, but it's beginning to seem that way. We're reaching the point where you can be a truly dedicated, state-of-the-art fan or you can have a life. Take your pick. ~Thomas Boswell, Washington Post, 13 April 1990
Baseball? It's just a game - as simple as a ball and a bat. Yet, as complex as the American spirit it symbolizes. It's a sport, business - and sometimes even religion. ~Ernie Harwell
More than any other American sport, baseball creates the magnetic, addictive illusion that it can almost be understood. ~Thomas Boswell
Don't tell me about the world. Not today. It's springtime and they're knocking a baseball around fields where the grass is damp and green in the morning and the kids are trying to hit the curve ball. ~Pete Hamill
Baseball is reassuring. It makes me feel as if the world is not going to blow up. ~Sharon Olds, This Sporting Life, 1987
The great thing about baseball is that there's a crisis every day. ~Gabe Paul
Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. ~George F. Will, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, 1990
You know you're pitching well when the batters look as bad as you do at the plate. ~Duke Snider, 1975
Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again. ~Jimmy Piersal, on how to diaper a baby, 1968
It never ceases to amaze me how many of baseball's wounds are self-inflicted. ~Bill Veeck
What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brusher her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. ~Leo Durocher
A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz. ~Humphrey Bogart
That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball. ~Bill Veeck

This one:

is so very, very true, and made me laugh aloud.
Ask your doctor if the Rockies are good for you. Are they generally? No. Do we stay? Of course. Why? Who built Stonehenge?

A few Yogi Berra quotes seems appropriate:
"Slump? I ain't in no slump! I just ain't hitting."
"You have to give 100 percent in the first half of the game. If that isn't enough, in the second half, you have to give what's left."
And I think Rockies fans should understand this one particularly: "It ain't over 'til it's over."
"Look what it's done for us. People still don't recognize us but..." *snaps fingers*
"We're contenders now!"

the jayson nix approach
If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter. bob ueker

Apparently, it worked. 2-1 over the Braves.
Well done!

This is a fun thread...I want to play
Satchel Page:
"If a man can beat you, walk him."
"Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don’t move."
"My pitching philosophy is simple; you gotta keep the ball off the fat part of the bat."
Dizzy Dean:
"Son, what kind of pitch would you like to miss."
"It ain't braggin' if you can back it up."
"I ain't what I used to be, but who the hell is?"
How I feel about the Rockies 1st week:
Skip: You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!
Larry: Lollygaggers!
Skip: Lollygaggers.
From Bull Durham
And the greatest quote on baseball ever:
"Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days." - Crash Davis

"Let's play two."
Thank you, Mr. Cub. My favorite baseball quote ever.
Oh, and pretty much anything in George Carlin's "Baseball and Football" routine, but especially:
"n football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Thanks for the lift
These quotes are wonderful! Thanks to all for brightening an otherwise dreary day.
I love the fact that baseball isn't "on the clock." I couldn't find a quote to that effect, so I made up my own:
"Of all major sports, only baseball is not regulated by the clock. By their conduct, the participants control completely the duration of the contest. In this respect, baseball is like many of life’s other most elemental, and pleasurable, activities – romance, sex, eating, and afternoon naps, to name but a few."
Feel free to add your own favorite untimed activities to the list.

The only one on this I found was this one:
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."-Earl Weaver
Here's a couple more for fun:
"Baseball is like church. Many attend but few understand."-Wes Westrum
Bob Uecker: "Anybody with ability can play in the big leagues. But to be able to trick people year in and year out, the way I did, I think that was a much greater feat."
Bob Uecker, on a little league game in which his son, Bobby Jr., played: "He struck out three times and lost the game for the team when a ball went through his legs at third base. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we left the parking lot. Gosh, I was proud. A chip off the old block."
(hoping this continues our 2 game win streak)

That's beautifully said
I don't get around to it nearly enough, but fishing has always been a great pleasure to me. While not completely untimed - you really have to quit once it gets dark - I've found it wonderful way to while away an afternoon.
Thanks for chiming in!

Roxhead look at what you started
well, this thread started to turn around the hearts and fans...and now the Rox have a 3 game win streak. So I have to keep it going..or as Crash Davis said so well:
Davis: I never told him to stay out of your bed.
Annie Savoy: You most certainly did.
Crash Davis: I never told him to stay out of your bed.
Annie Savoy: Yes you did.
Crash Davis: I told him that a player on a streak has to respect the streak.
Annie Savoy: Oh fine.
Crash Davis: You know why? Because they don't - -they don't happen very often.
Annie Savoy: Right.
Crash Davis: If you believe you're playing well because you're getting laid, or because you're not getting laid, or because you wear women's underwear, then you ARE! And you should know that!
"The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again." - James Earl Jones as Terrance Mann Crash
"Baseball is dull only to dull minds."- Red Barber

Sorry for what?
These contributions are great! And I am thrilled at the response this thread has gotten. It's been really fun. I hope the replies keep coming.
I can't believe I missed the quote from "Field of Dreams". I was so taken by that speech when I first saw the movie. Thanks for the reminder.
