Game #38: Reynolds vs. Young
Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres, May 11, 2008 2:05 PM MDT
I didn't realize until today that the last few games have been mis-labeled. Rox Girl made Wednesday's game #33 after Tuesday's game was #33. Anyway . . .
Greg Reynolds makes his debut this afternoon!
Go Rockies!
No stat box available for Reynolds (minor league numbers), but here's Young's:

Iannetta is playing (thank god)
But of course Torre is still the starter. Just so everyone knows.

Why aren't we running at all against the Padres?
Nothing last night against Maddux who doesn’t care, and not even a flinch today against Young. Is Carlin that much better defensively than their other catchers?
yes... he did...
Not the best at bat with runners on. He’s hitting .227 with RISP this year, with an OPS of .633. That’s just not pretty.

I agree..
...the kid looked okay. Good K:ball ratio, worked fast, kept a managable pitch count, and control was there for the most part – kept the fastballs down and away. Had a great hook going for him too. Hairstons’s HR was a fluke, just had a few mistakes. Overall his debut was much better than our porr excuse for an offense.
by TulsaDriller on May 11, 2008 3:53 PM MDT up reply actions
Reynolds
is not ready in my opinion. This move was a mistake made in desperation, and I hope we don’t continue to rush him. Looking at his numbers in the minors this year suggests that he needs more time, and getting shelled at Petco by the Pads popgun offense confirms it. He needs to find a strikeout pitch. The guy seems to have a lot of upside, but I was underwhelmed today before the balls started flying out. Just being better than Redman is not enough.
Shelled? Really?
Guy made three bad pitches in five and two thirds in his big league debut. I’m in total agreement that the putaway pitch he’ll need to be successful in the long term isn’t there yet, but I liked what I saw today. Good poise, excellent command, a willingness to throw all three pitches in any count – the kid knows how to pitch, and as long as he’s up here, he’s not going to embarrass himself. I think you’re way too harsh here – direct some of that frustration toward the offense.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Also keep in mind
Reynolds has thrown four innings over the last week and a half or so. That probably accounts for why he wasn’t as sharp there in the sixth – fastball wasn’t moving like it had been in the first few frames, and Greene caught all of one of those flat sinkers.
I don’t think there’s any question that he’s the best option we’ve got to take that fifth slot in the rotation at present – at least until Hirsh returns.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Look
I’m not here giving up on the kid, but I’m being honest in terms of what I saw out there: a hell of a lot more Jason Hirsch than Josh Beckett. The stuff is interesting and I agree that I’d like to see more of the curve, but 4 runs in 5.2 is absolutely getting shelled at Petco, particularly in light of the fact that the Padres have 1 guy who would get any ABs for the Dodgers or Dbacks. The Rox don’t score 5 total runs in a series at Petco, so giving up that many runs in one game is a guaranteed loss.
More importantly, however, is that his AAA numbers this year were pretty bad. I’d feel better about this if he had been dominating minor league batters, but he has not. I simply think rushing him now is not the right answer. Its abundantly clear that he’s not going to save our season.
I don’t mean to be overly harsh because he didn’t embarrass himself. My criticism is more for an organization that refused to strike while the iron is hot this offseason by making bold moves, and instead is making defensive, hurried moves that I do not feel will result in short or long term benefits.
Oh yeah, and the offense is a joke too.
Re:
You mean a kid making his first big league start didn’t resemble last year’s AL Cy Young runner-up? Stunning.
We’re not asking Greg Reynolds to save our season, dude. He’s a fill-in at this point unless he gets better on the fly and proves unquestionably that he belongs in the big league rotation. You’ve read the same quotes and blog posts that I have – the Rox freely admit that this is not the ideal situation to bring up Reynolds, but of the available options, he’s the one that makes the most sense.
And I’ll just agree to disagree with your definition of ‘shelled’ – all I will say is that my definition doesn’t change within the ballpark or lineup context.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Beckett
I certainly don’t expect him to be Beckett, I just don’t see the benefit of bringing him up when he can’t have a major impact because he is not yet ready.
And we can obviously quibble all day about the definition of shelled, suffice to say he did not put us in a position to win the game today. Maybe not shelled, certainly not good.
Please, management, don’t rush him.
I actually agree with your opinion that Reynolds start
wasn’t that impressive, all told, but disagree with you that it shows anything about his preparedness. It’s just his first start, let’s give him one or two more before we start with the mistake talk. Looking at his minor league numbers this year tells me that there aren’t enough numbers too look at to get anything useful.
Again
Not blaming this on him. I just don’t think he is ready. The biggest knock on him in the draft is that he doesn’t miss enough bats, that he won’t strike guys out. And I didn’t see anything to disabuse that notion today, including Kouz’s yorvit-like chase of a ball in the dirt. He needs more work.
I'm not saying he doesn't need more work,
but I’m not sure that the work he needs has to be done at the AAA level. A trade for another pitcher at this point in the season where we would have gotten reamed would have been just as panicky as calling Reynolds up, and probably just about as effective. Right now he looks like a spot starter/ number five guy, which is the best we could have gotten in the trade or waiver wire markets. Desperate call-up? Sure. But we were/are desperate, so I think it’s still probably warranted.
This position is ok
if you honestly believe he’ll get the work/coaching at the major league level to allow him to make the improvements he needs. Do you? If that is the case, why did we send Morales down? Pitching in the majors is not always the best way to prepare a guy to pitch in the majors.

De La Rosa vs. Webb?
I knew it. Our only hope is that AZ keeps slumping in May.
We're all going to die!
How do you know this is slumping and not the real AZ?
They had some seriously lucky numbers with balls in play in April. Plus I think they’re stealing signs at home, but that’s not going to help us.
With our hitting
i’m not sure if they told us what was coming we could hit it enough time in a row to score runs off Webb and Haren
Anyone seen Jeff Baker? Has he called in?
Do you have anything to back that up?
A blog post or something? Just curious because I haven’t heard that, and figure that someone would start complaining and/or throwing at D backs hitters.
No, just weird numbers...
like look at Justin Upton’s splits. He’s got over a .500 BABIP at Chase, and that just doesn’t happen. Especially when you consider it’s half of that anywhere else. You look at a lot of their guys Reynolds, Drew, Jackson and they’re the same way, but a bit less exaggerated.
Here's a bunch of them:
BABIP:
Matt Holliday
Home: .387
Away: .318
I’m just using his career stats as an example of a good hitter taking advantage of a hitter’s park. This season he’s at .408/.297
Upton .509/.257
Drew .322/.222
Reynolds .360/.231
Jackson .355/.273 (I actually think his start’s legit)
Byrnes .268/.208
Hudson .345/.213
Snyder .400/.273
Young .297/.250 (he’s actually hitting better on the road overall)
Besides the huge gaps on some of these guys, what’s weird to me is that every single member of their regular starting lineup has a better BABIP at home than on the road. Again, that’s something that doesn’t normally happen, even at hitter friendly parks -for instance both Hawpe and Taveras have better BABIP’s on the road this year. A lot of those bumps are significant. It could very well be just a lot of luck and coincidence, but it certainly smells fishy to me.

I confess it:
I know the reason we suck this year. My Rockies magazine, with my picture from last opening day and with about 11 signatures, the one I took to every single game last year – is gone.
I’ve turned my entire room upside down. Everywhere I thought it was it’s not. I realize I haven’t seen it all season.
Sorry Rockies fans….
www.notthisday.com ....coming September 26th and 27th at the Pinnacle Event Center, Denver.
I dunno
I think it might have something to do with the fact that we have two pitchers worthy of starting for a contending team and when Torrealba’s in the lineup we have four spots in the lineup that can’t hit major league pitching.
Could be the mag, though.
Last year on Mother's Day
We got blown out 15-2 by the Giants, just as bad a team as the Padres. Which leads me to the conclusion: The Rockies really just hate their moms.
We're all going to die!
