Key to the Game

Score more runs than the Dbacks. I like our chances if that happens. I don’t like our chances of that happening.

Atkins...

not in the lineup. Are his numbers against Webb that bad? I know he hasn’t had a day off yet this year, but this seems a little strange.

Ah, makes more sense now.

Thanks. Hopefully the other guys can get it going tonight against Webb, I am hoping and waiting for a Brad Hawpe breakout. Glad to see Iannetta in there again, he’ll do better tonite I’m thinking.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but

..Hurdle has a point when people discredit Cook. Peavy and Webb are great pitchers but I don’t see the point of becomming weak-kneed and star-struck in the batters box. Other teams don’t freak out against Cook why should the Rockies fear Webb. I like our chances against anyone in the NL with Cookie on the mound. BTW Cook’s ERA is 2.26 vs Webb at 2.41

41 games in already?

Ouch. Also, since I’m leaving NY on Monday, I’m currently taking down and packing a lot of things, including all my Rockies posters, pictures, and tickets etc. If they start winning, I swear the stuff won’t come out of the box all summer.

We're all going to die!

Good for us I think – Burke is know for having a less than stellar glove at first base.

Randon thoughts

1. I said ten games into the season this team was in trouble. They still are.
2. No upgrades = No progress
3. Fluke spoiled the FO. Holes are evident
4. Too many free swingers who do not have an agenda at the plate but to hack.
5. Pitching (Elmer Dessens, Tim Harrilkia, Mark Redmon, Josh Towers, Kip Wells, possibly Julian Taveres) need I say more.
6. This team was a .500 team except for the last two weeks. Without upgrade it has slipped below that. They look very much like 2006 squad.

by PinchHitLancePainter on May 15, 2008 8:55 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hard to argue.

I’m really trying to stop harping about the offseason because obviously its spilled (spilt?) milk. But I do expect to see more heart and head from these guys, and as you say they all look like a bunch of hackers out there, which would be easier to deal with if they ever hit a HR.

n/t

The Savannah Sand Gnats rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists, 4-3, and extend their winning streak to three games Thursday night at Grayson Stadium.
A crowd of 1,944 watched as Savannah improved to 18-22. Asheville, owner of the South Atlantic League’s best record, fell to 27-14. Savannah won the series, 3-1.
"This is very emotional," said Savannah’s Francisco Pena, who scored the game-winning run. "We’ve been playing much better as a team. We struggled at the first (of the season), but now we’re getting everything together."

I'm actually paying more attention to the Sky Sox game

than I am to the Rockies right now. Ian Stewart hit his tenth homerun, his fifth on the road. Jayson Nix and Joe Koshansky have also homered, Christian Colonel already has two more hits and the Sky Sox are up seven to nothing in the fourth.

What really gets me PO'ed

is the lack of hitting adjustments. These guys are supposed to be Major leaguers. I remember coming up to double AA in 1983. I was a lefty and they would throw a strike on the outside (as I always took till they threw a strike) and then pound me with hard stuff on the inside corner waist high. After five games I moved back three inches, started inside outting them and driving the high stuff over the fence. These guys never change their MO or seem to adjust. You have to today. Sometimes the slumps do not end until you adjust. None of the Rocks guys adjust.

by PinchHitLancePainter on May 15, 2008 9:13 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sounds like....

you think we need a new hitting coach. Cockrell did what, exactly, to qualify for the job? Oh, that’s right, a career minor leaguer and former 1st round pick who quarterbacked at Tennessee. Hmm, could he have gotten the job because he’s a Helton crony who is willing to work cheap? Or is he a qualified hitting instructor? Whatdaya think?

by GoRoxGo on May 15, 2008 9:39 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Of this team's

problems, a hitting coach is very low on my list.

I still think something's up with Arizona

I’m going to wait until after we stop playing them to try and be a little more objective though. Right now they’re on pace to have a bigger difference in their home/road splits than any Rockies squad ever has.

by DbacksSkins on May 15, 2008 9:58 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Honestly,

I think it has a lot to do with 1. having a really hitter-friendly park, but also, 2. having a ton of young hitters. I think with a lot of youth, you’re much more likely to have a big home/away split.

Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.

by DbacksSkins on May 15, 2008 10:11 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The hitters were younger in 2007

And this kind of discrepancy didn’t show up. And as far as a hitter friendly park, Chase isn’t suddenly more hitter friendly than Coors circa 1995-1999. I think there are probably other factors, I think there’s a lot of luck, since a chunk of your home stats are against NL West foes, I think your advance scouts have done their homework on Rockies pitchers (maybe with binoculars at Tucson) and we haven’t fixed some patterns, tipped pitches or whatever. You’ll note that the D-backs hit our pitchers about as well at Coors. I think cheating’s a possibility but am guessing that what’s happening falls within the rules, it just leaves a lot of bitterness.

But they're still not good on the road,

And that’ the issue we’re talking about. The numbers will probably start to level, and probably mostly in a direction that won’t make you quite as happy, but right now they are pretty far out of a normal range.

by Rox Girl on May 15, 2008 10:42 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, I don't disagree.

I just think that there’s more of a psychological edge when a young hitter is swinging at home than for a veteran player.

Folks you need to forget about this season.

Stop coming here and getting TO’d. Stop watching the games as this will continue throughout. There are seasons where everything will go wrong and despite the players and fans best wishes it never gets better. I have seen it for years and played a couple of minor league seasons that way.

This is one of those years for the purple.

U-ball = The Rocket?

That’s a lot a maturation in a hurry. No, I think the Rockies are going to finish a lot stronger than this, but it’s going to have to take some pretty bad luck hitting Arizona too, at this point for us to compete for the division. The Wild Card might be easier, we’ll see.

You sir

are out of line. To suggest that we should stop coming to the Row to talk Rockies baseball simply because we’re having a bad season (thusfar) is reprehensible. Purple Row is our one means of trying to make sense of it all. You are perfectly welcome to stay away. The rest of us will plug along as we see fit.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~ Earl Wilson

No keep coming here

just don’t lose any sleep or meals because of this. You would be surprised how little the players actually get frsutrated as compared to the fans.

Well I turned it on for a couple of minutes.

I saw the four hot babes picking up their purses to leave so it must be over.

Let me guess

Holliday likely swung at an inside pitch and hit a nubber to the right side.

But you were really close.

I knew it would be something like that.

One big issue is the middle order is swinging at everything off the plate. Credit the Bosox advance guys for finding the holes.

Adjustments needed fast
