Iannetta's playing.
Let’s hope that he breaks out of his recent funk and earns himself a few more starts over the next week.

Iannetta in there, Holliday back, Baker
giving a chance to capitalize on his hot game last night…
and then we have Jeff Francis. Which may be an adventure.
We're all going to die!

Also
I find it curious the Twins are playing the game without a third baseman. At least according to the lineup. ;) Well, we know what side to hit ‘em to…

I know who he is, a 34 year old third baseman with just over 200 big league at bats = minor league journeyman.

That's a just plain awful bottom of the Twins lineup, BTW
Redmond – .190
Clark – fresh from Rochester
Everett – .190
Slowey – a pitcher
The sad thing is, I don’t know who’s going to wind up slumpbusting whom in this scenario. Whether Francis is the cure for these guys, or vice versa.

Time for some Barmes love
I know we’re all holding our breath waiting for him to turn back to the pumpkin he’s been the last couple of years but maybe, just maybe, the pre-venison Clint Barmes was the real Clint Barmes. And maybe, just maybe, today’s Clint Barmes is the real deal.
If so, our 2B problem is pretty much solved. Like I said, it’s “maybe, just maybe”, but that would be pretty damned sweet. And good for him for battling back to this level after what had to have been a discouraging couple of years.

Similar to De La Rosa this week
and Reynolds and Jimenez this weekend.
We are asking our starters to be way to perfect, and it does effect the way they pitch. If they’re constantly having to pitch away from contact or in tight spots early in games, they are bound to make mistakes.
It might sound silly, but I think our starting pitching would pick up if our offense would care to pick them up.

I actually like the choice
As long as Hurdle has a quick hook in the event of trouble (i.e. tying run gets on deck)...we need to get Corpas back on track and the more success that he has in pressure situations, the better.

I was at the game....my thoughts
I was in that crowd. The place was PACKED! Biggest crowd, I’ve ever seen that wasn’t opening day, fireworks, playoff, 07 Run…...and they said on the Radio going to the game, that Saturday night the Rockies had the biggest walk up tickets sales in the history of the team, over 8,000 walk up tickets sold Saturday.
Helton, Home Run….helps, his D was amazing! I have hope he will get his timing adjusted to his slowing bat, and rebound some.
Hawpe….wow….he’s…..wow bad
Francis: Really was down to 2 pitches….fast ball and Change up. In fact his out pitch was his change up. His curve was very, very flat, and un-curvey (technical term, hope I didn’t lose anyone). His fastball was 85-89mph. That’s slower then last year. He was usually around 86/87 mph area. There is something wrong here….even with this solid outing, there is something wrong here.
Barmes.: Who IS this guy…he’s not the 07 Barmes.
Corpas can’t throw his slider for a strike.
Hurdle: Is the biggest idiot I’ve ever seen. Hurdle should be fired RIGHT NOW! Why did he pitch to Morneou w/ one out and first base open and the runner at 2nd?. He was the only one besides Young in this lineup that could hurt anyone and Young was on 2nd. And letting Bucky bat in the 7th with RISP? really? that one made no damn sense. Even if our pen was over worked, and it’s not, the potential for the additional runs was bigger then having Bucky pitch the 8th.

Thanks for the report
I had the game on the TV, but didn’t really start paying attention until late 6th inning. (Doing other things like planting my garden.)
I too was amazed by the decision to let Taylor bat in the 7th. Yeah he drew a walk, but more runs scored would have been more better. Corpas got through the 9th, but didn’t look good doing it. At least to my eye.
Still, a W is a W. I’ll take it. And I thought the crowd looked huge. That’s good to see. I haven’t given up hope yet, and it’s good to know so many others haven’t either.

I was also suprised by Bucky's AB..
Why pitch Herges 2 innings last night, and then Bucky two innings tonight? If he had split Herges to one inning last night, one tonight and done the same to Bucky he could have used a real hitter for that spot. It worked out, but didn’t understand the reasoning behind it.

I was also at the game
I agreed with most of what you said. I personally didn’t think Francis’ curve was that bad, he just didn’t have confidence in it at all. Hawpe is bad…because he’s flying open and pulling off the ball, I think all he’s trying to do is hit home runs. He needs to stay in there and drive the ball.
Some other observations…the bats are coming, in the last three innings, four of our nine outs were line drives that were just smashed and a fifth was a sac bunt by Barmes. On Barmes, I don’t think the ‘07 Barmes was the real Barmes and I don’t think the ‘05 Barmes was the real Barmes either. I’m pretty sure it’s somewhere in between.
Also, Slowey was very lucky that he didn’t give up back-to-back-to-back homers in the sixth. If Holliday’s bat stays intact, that ball was gone and Atkins’ double hit 2/3 of the way up the wall.
Francis looked like last year’s 17 game winner today. Outside of the one bad pitch to Morneau he was great. For some reason, I found it interesting that the Twins didn’t have a single today.
Also, kudos to the fans, over 118,000 at the series this weekend, great job. And I’m now on the Tom Runnells for Rockies Manager bandwagon.

yeah
I forgot to mention those 2 almost homers. Holliday’s out was amazing how high, and hard that ball travel, with a shattered bat!
I don’t know what Barmes is real….but I LOVE this one! man crush love! he played D, squared up every ball.
One other thing I didn’t mention…after we got up that strike zone got HUGE in the last 2 innings…..the ump had a plane to catch.

Have to disagree on Francis
He rarely hit 90 last year unless he pitched in San Fran with their inflated gun. 86-87 has been his MO for the last three years. Also, the curve had much more action today, especially by taking velocity off the pitch and throwing it in the high 60’s, low 70’s. I’m not sure where your vantage point was, but if you can find film on the game today, watch it back and you’ll see a better Francis curveball.
Command and delivery quirks are the problem, not necessarily the stuff, but he must have gained some of his deceptiveness back with the number of K’s he racked up today.

I was down the 3rd base line
just in the OF, lower level. I could see up/down great, but not in/out. His curve/slurve didn’t seem to have much break at all up down…but it could have moved several feet in/out. Up/down, it was very flat. BUT he was working fastball/change like a pro, and Iannetta had the Twins guessing wrong several times. One of the K’s Francis threw 3 change ups in a row….and the batter was looking fastball cause he was way ahead. His Change-up had a real late bite/movement, almost sinker like. The Twins were out ahead of this change a lot.
I thought Francis worked in the 89-90 mph range with his fastball. He did hit that area a couple times, but only a few times.

IMO
Francis’ main problem has been confidence, not just this year, but his entire career. Someone (preferrably Hurdle) needs to get up in his face and tell him something like this:
Jeff, you are our ace. You are one of the best pitchers in the National League. Start pitching like it. Yes, you got lit up in Boston last October, but that was just one game and it’s in the past. Get over it. Stop thinking and start pitching. Breathe out of your eyelids or whatever crap you pitchers do. This team needs you to be confident and successful in order for us to be successful. So pull your head out of your…(I’m assuming everyone can figure the last word out.)
