Friday Morning Rockpile:
So, we already know that Troy Tulowitzki is out for an extended period of time. And Jay Cutler has Type 1 Diabetes. And Joe Sakic and the Avs were humiliated by the Red Wings last night, being swept out of the playoffs. And the Nuggets dropped out of the playoffs after losing to the Lakers earlier this week. What a week for Denver sports.
The Rockies are looking at the recently designated-for-assignment Juan Castro. Castro played for the Reds since a trade there in 2006. As a bench player this season:
That's a -74 OPS+ if you're keeping track. Not that it matters all that much. Last season he put up a .180/.211/.236 line as bench player. He certainly does offer versatility on defense (though his ability has diminished over the years), but we're looking at another offensive sieve when he gets into games. Yet, as the article points out, Castro would spend time with the Sky Sox in order to see how things shake out in the majors first.
Another three-game series against the Dodgers, this time at Coors. Here's to a rousing May start!

Why
would the Rockies waste time & money on a player like Juan Castro,? Do the Skysox need infield depth?
Barmes-Baker-Q-Herrera are all better options. Stewart to 3rd, Atkins to 2nd is a better option. Jayson Nix is probably a better option. The Rox are fortunate to have plenty of capable middle infielders at the AAA and ML levels.
The bright lining on the dark cloud of an injury to a regular is that an organization gets to try out and evaluate other prospects in the organization. Sometimes, one of them catches fire and the team ends up with another reliable ML player. Clogging up the process with a failed veteran player from a failure-plagued organization is pointless.
If the Skysox need a back-up infielder, promote a young guy from within the org. & see what he does.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.

The Broncos draft was at the begining of this week.
After how bad everything has gone for Denver sports teams this week, I wouldn’t be surprised if we look back in a couple of years at 2008 as the worst draft in Broncos history.

Pressure's off
All the high expectations put on the Rox to start this season have eased off with the team’s cold start and now the Tulo injury. Now, it’s just like last year – nobody expects anything from this team. It’s time to go play like that’s the case: there’s nothing to lose, so let it all hang out, play as hard as you can, and have fun. I don’t think this has been a very fun year for the Rox – the time to recapture that starts today.
No more pressure. Just play.

amen to that
If we look at it honestly we lost a great defensive player but also a .150 hitter till the all star break. Not that big of a killer if you ask me. Any of the replacement SS are going to be at least serviceable defensively and I would venture to guess that they are going hit just a tad higher that .150. So it is dark days for sure but the silver lining is that we really didn’t lose all that much. Plus maybe this will be the end of the Tulo SI curse and he will return on FIRE!!! Go Rox!

Agreed
This pathetic start, and Arizona’s hot one, pretty much bags the season for the Rox. The ridicule has already been endured. The national media has had their laugh and their “I told you they were a fluke of luck”.
So now the players can loosen their tight grip on the bats and let the game come. Like you said, they should start playing much better now that the pressure is off.

I’m not saying the season’s over – did we not learn ANYTHING from our 18-27 start last year? – but the Rox will probably be written off. Hell, this entire community here pretty much has, and we’re the diehards.
So let them write the Rox off. Like I said, that might help them relax.

I stated after game 15 that this team was in trouble..
everybody blasted me for being so negative so early. Well they hitched their wagons to too many unknowns (Nix, Jimenez, Morales, etc.). They are simply having one of those lost seasons where nothing goes right. I remember St. Louis had one in 1983 after winning the World Series and they got desperate and traded Keith Hernandez for Neil Allen to get pitching help. Ken OBerkfell to Atlanta for Ken Dayley, etc. The biggest concern I have for the Rocks is the large number of BBs they have given up.
It will be interesting to see how the attendance goes the rest of the year given the April wipe out of the pennant chances. They have some bigger payroll bogeys to make and they were seriously hoping for a 20-25% attendance spike. With gas prices and all I’ll be anxious to see the result.
Just remember this, you can never stand pat after a winning year. Hopefully O’Dowd learned that lesson.

Early Struggles
So what are the rox supposed to do? the public wanted themt to spend money on their players and keep the core players. Morales and uball are young. Did you want the rox to get a hampton/ neagle? At some point, the young pitchers were going to have to learn. Why not this year, the rox played out of this world for a month last year, won some fans back. Really, is every year supposed to be perfect? they can’t do it every time, and sooner or later you are going to have to give the young guys a chance. Can’t do it all once (both position and pitching staff) and i for one think that the rox have done a fairly good job. They did todd and the toddlers, now its todd and the toddlers of the pitching staff. Give them time, the gloom and doom is really not needed. Dealin’ Dan will keep quiet i think. minus an infielder. The pitching staff is in shambles, but the talent is there and now they have to put it together. I really think uball and morales will get their act together ( they both have the talent, just not the experience) and the staff will be ok again. I’ll take standing somewhat pat if it means that the core group of players comes back.

Expectations
O’Dowd wasted 11 million on Wells, Redman and Viscaino. Nothing Nix had ever done in the minors indicated he would be able to hit in the majors but they handed him second base. Barmes, Q, Giles all had better springs. It’s great that they spent money on their core players but you still have to bring in 1 or 2 key additions to be successful. Holliday, Hawpe, Torrealba, Tulo, Willy T, Spilly all had career years in 07. Management basically lucked out last year with a miracle finish. It remains to be seen if Jiminez and Morales will pan out. Even with the problems they have now I would expect them to play 500 ball. Hurdle did his best work last year when he sat on his hands and let them play down the stretch and now he’s back to overmanaging. I’m not too upset about this year because they made the WS which is something I didn’t think I would see in my lifetime.

Good points.....
I’m a new poster here, and like reading your contrarian views on an otherwise optimistic message board. There is no question that the Rockies sat on their laurels after the World Series and only sought to maintain the current core to the roster, not add to it or improve upon it.
It was asking a lot for the team to get 60+ outings from two youngsters in Uball and Morales, while having the 5th spot anchored by a fringe guy like Redman. Funny how Josh Fogg can actually be made to look good when we are confronted with the current situation.
I’m really worried about Tulo’s injury. His quad was torn in his first year in the minors, though I’m not sure it’s the same quad muscle. But for the tendon to tear is bad news for a shortstop who plays at his energy level. Tulo’s future mobility and dexterity may be limited by this for a long time. Let’s hope not.
The season’s not completely lost, but is shaping up to be a more typical “Rockies losing season” that we had unfortunately grown accustomed to in the past. Oh well.

Otherwise optimistic?
There must be something wrong with my screen if your reading an otherwise optimistic board. In fact I’m about to give up on Purple Row. I get enough Rockies suck and “fail” talk about my boys from the loser dodger fans I work with, and from trolls on other boards. I’m all for inteliigent baseball talk and I love how Rox Girl and Russ link all relevant news of the day, and I love learning what’s happening in the pebble report, but read most comments or, god-forbid, a game thread, and it is dismal. I haven’t seen optimism at the row since Feb 15, I feel… Could have been Feb 26, prior to the first ST game

I'm actually partly in agreement, but there are differences still
For one, it’s still too early, but to your broader points, I honestly think the front office decided not to go full throttle for 2008 by turning down Dan Haren. Where I disagree with you, is that I think it might have been the right decision. I just don’t think the players we currently have are capable of more than 90-92 wins, at it takes them playing at their best to get there. I think you add a Haren to that and they’re capable of 95, but again at their best. It would have raised our chances of the playoffs from roughly one in five, to one in four. I just don’t think that’s enough given the players we would have had to give up. What I’m saying is, our best team isn’t quite here yet and the front office doesn’t think the current core is enough. The numbers seem to agree with them. I think they took a pass to wait for Fowler, Stewart and Nelson to come into their roles and for Jimenez, Morales and Hirsh to mature into better pitchers.
As for the attendance, this team isn’t going to be this bad forever, it will start winning again and the crowds will stay relatively high. Last season at this point the citizens were calling for blood, if you recall Monfort must sell and what not, so at least there isn’t that.
Definitely agree about the walks, though. It’s a big difference over what U-ball and Frankie Mo are doing compared to how Rodrigo and Fogg pitched last season, and it’s killing our pen fast.

Too easy
My first instinct upon reading a “I told you so” post regarding a failure in the baseball world is to call you on it. It’s just way too easy to be a pessimist about baseball in general. That said, it would seem your pessimism was more accurate than my optimism, and I certainly share your concerns over the walks. Why have walks been a near-constant frustration in Rockies world?
Now, where we disagree is this: I don’t think the Rockies just stood pat. They did spend, just not to outsiders. It would seem it failed for 2008 (and there is no guarantees in baseball decision), but long term is still to be seen. Last year they started the year in full rebuilding mode and surprised everyone by competing. I was actually releived to see them stick to the program that got them to the WS and invest in their own young guys (even if Tulo is hurt and Corpas has struggled), rather than go after the horde of low-talent, high-pay free agents that were available. Haren being the obvious exception that we should have gone after in trade. Oh, and I’m really not very happy with last years draft and hope the FO opens the checkbook this year. Our minor league system is still above average due to the depth, but the decline in true impact prospects (especially starting pitching) scares me more than anything I’ve seen on the major league field.
I too get frustrated when things go awry, and they certainly have so far in 2008. But I don’t blame the front office for this. In fact, I think the last 5 years O’Dowd has finally righted the ship and I really fear the day when the Front Office bends to the short term solution hoping for a short-term spike in ticket sales.

what if the core group is what it is and that is a .393 winning percentage team and we lose a 100 games?
I love optimism, I really do. But this club is on pace to lose 100 games (technically 63-99), not to win 90. We just lost our starting Shortstop, and we don’t have a 2ndbaseman. Sorry I can’t see the reason for optimism.

Season is 162
.... One month that everything that could go wrong has. But at the same time. I am not jumping off this ship. I remember watching Francis in his first start, watched them in all those loosing seasons, like 95 in 2005 and 94 in 2004. They had to invest sooners or later and one. This year they invested internally, maybe next they invest outside the organization. A lot of people are fairweather fans, maybe they should go back to watching the yankees or the sox. every year isn’t going to be a dream like last, at some point there will be fail. I am more then content to see 20,000 or 25,00 at coors then the bandwagon jumpers. Not giving the owners a free pass, still not pleased with the WS ticket fiasco, so they will have to make improvements. I like the direction they are going and like i said earlier, the talent that we have will eventually come through.
