Go Cookieee

need a bigtime start tonight and pleasee can we get some consistency with this offense?!!?

by TuLoRocks2008 on May 20, 2008 5:52 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This lineup kind of baffles me.

Good to see Scotty Pods get the start, yet Helton remains in the cleanup spot. Hawpe back in there…how about we let him have one at bat and then pinch hit for him with Spilly? Works out for everyone. Q gets the start – we’ll have to see if his bat comes around. Torre in there to absolutely no one’s surprise…maybe a few more RBIs? CDI, you need to get your act together. Anywho…let’s make it four in a row!

What % of runs have been scored off of Starters vs. Relievers this season? What league average is there? Whether its something that someone might keep track of or if i’m just crazy?

I heard on KOA

That they have scored 40% of runs in the 7th or later, just got to thinking that that might mean they are having a harder time hitting starters (even crappy starters). I know its normal for relievers to get hit harder, such is the reason they are relievers – just thought that maybe thats really all the Rockies were scoring on.

Baseball Reference

Go to the splits pages for the team and for the league.

70% runs given up by starters

National League:

66.7% runs given up by starters.

Bobbleheads

I’m all for the novelty of bobbleheads as a giveaway, and plan on being at the park for all 3 games. But, those have to be the worst looking bobbleheads ever

I'm just going to the June 7th game to get Tulo's Bobblehead

the next games I’m going to are June 16th’s makeup game vs the Braves to get the NL Champs Collectible Trophy & June 17th’s game vs the Indians just to see Jamey Carroll again.

Stupid Arias.

Stupid Hurdle. You both suck at life.

Every day is a Holliday!

All of this needs to stop...

Really. Garrett Atkins. Zero for four, eight left on base. Brad Hawpe zero for three with a walk. Yorvit Torrealba, zero for four. Even Barmes and Holliday, despite their too little, too late game heroics didn’t come through when they should have earlier in the game.

This isn’t just a manager/middle reliever thing, and those two are going to be scapegoats that don’t solve the real problem. Even if Hurdle replaces Torrealba with Iannetta, that’s not enough to fix our offensive woes. We don’t get better until Hawpe fixes his swing, Atkins starts hitting in high leverage situations, and Holliday shows more power. Replacing Arias with another middle reliever from AAA Victor Zambrano, Juan Morillo? or off the scrap heap does nothing. Replacing Hurdle? Maybe does a little more, but probably not as much as people seem to think.

Laying this all on a fungible guy like Arias leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I know full well we’ll still have the bigger problem without him.

Neither completely at fault tonight

Arias had his first rough outing tonight. It’s called relief pitching, and it happens. The biggest problem is that we continue to put tremendous stress on our pitching staff by failing to score runs early in games or allow our guys to pitch with a lead. Every pitch our pitchers throw right now has the chance to swing a game, and that’s not a good thing. Too much high leverage pitching right now to suceed with any regularity. Arias takes the fall tonight, but this wasn’t his game to lose.

Hurdle.. Could he be blamed for Torrealba? Sure, but that’s probably it. The bullpen’s stars have been heavily taxed recently, and this team will only get better if they can get Corpas to find his way, so you can’t fault him there. Starting Pods tonight was a feather in his cap, as well as Quintanilla. If you’re going to detract him for playing Torrelaba, than you have to credit him for playing these two.

No, tonight’s loss falls on the offense once again, namely three players, and one surprising one: Atkins, Torrealba, and Barmes. I normally don’t pay any attention to RISP numbers, but Atkins is on one really bad kick, and eight runners stranded on his watch is a major deal in a would be one run game. Torrealba can’t be faulted too much if you don’t expect him to contribute much. It really isn’t his fault if he’s already not equipped to be placed in the situation he is. That said, he made poor decisions that could have been avoided, swinging at first pitch breaking balls, breaking balls in the dirt, breaking balls away behind in the count…you get the idea.

Barmes looks like a partial hero after drawing it closer, but he was brutal at the plate for eight innings, especially at times where the game could have been blown open with the starter still in the game. Also, as we discussed last night, he failed to make any outs on three balls hit to his left, and two weren’t terribly difficult. He’s sure handed, but he’s not terribly rangy, and he could have helped Arias some in the ninth. That said, the homer is a big point in his favor, so he gets the “keep trying hard speech” instead of the “this is unacceptable” speech.
