First Coors Field Trip

Hi there, Purple Row. This is doctorK from Athletics Nation. My wife and I are making a week-long visit to Denver the first week of July, and, seeing as the Rockies are hosting a couple of series that week, and me being a big baseball fan (as well as a fan of run-on sentences), I figured that I'd just have to pay a visit to your place and catch a little NL baseball. The way our schedule works out, we will probably go to either of the July 3 or July 4 games against the Marlins. I have a few questions for you about your ballpark.

  1. Recommended seat locations (edit: due to my choice of games, I went straight to Stub Hub and got two seats in section 206).
  2. Are there any must-see attractions at the ballpark (other than the game)?
  3. Where is the best food at the park?
  4. Anything else I should know about?

By the way, we live in Sunnyvale, less than a half mile from Fremont High School, which of course is where Troy Tulowitzki is from. Thanks for your help, and hope to see some of you at the game.

And thanks to Silverblood for correcting my errors in the initial version of this post. :)

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Switch around your 'o' and 'u'

and you have “Tulowitzki,” which is of course the proper way to spell our young phenom’s name. ;) Of course, he hasn’t looked so phenom-like, since he sucked and then got injured, but we trust that he will be fine. [Knock very hard on wood.]

1. I like the right-field mezzanine (second deck) or the outfield boxes (first deck) as you really can’t go wrong in Coors. They’ll run you about $20-$30 a ticket, but are worth it.
2. No, unless you count Dinger’s parading behind home plate during the ninth inning?
3. I actually can’t say, since I like all of it. Get a Hebrew Dog and a beer, and you’ll be set. (Unless you really want to TRY Rocky Mountain Oysters…)
4. NL baseball is better. ;) Try us, you’ll like us… Except when we lose a lot, such as we are currently doing.

And they're not playing the Padres on July 3 and 4

They’re playing the Marlins. And since they’re fireworks games, you’re probably going to have to try pretty hard to get a ticket. My sister and I already couldn’t find tickets in the same section. Any backup options? (The Pads games are the 1st and 2nd).

Thanks for the advice, BTW

I just got two tickets for the 4th in section 206. Any holy cow, are your tickets pricy.

Any = And

Tough night – we had to endure watching Emil Brown play a line drive into a game-losing three-run error tonight.

Those are great seats..

and you’ll have a chance to catch a few foul balls. That section is one of my favorites because they deliver food right to your seats. Just hold up the purple menu between hitters and the attendant will run down and take your order (it’s convenient during those crunch times when the game is too intense to get out of your seat). There is a special food vendor right behind that section so the wait usually isn’t too long anyway.

BTW, those seats are BOGO..

for Wells Fargo customers making them $25 each.

I * think *

but do not know for sure, that the price goes up a bit for the fireworks games. Maybe. Because they are in such high demand. I had to get single tickets in the pavilion for the game – but the pavilion/rockpile seats get you onto the field for the fireworks!! I think you’ll love Coors, btw…it’s a beautiful ballpark.

Those are Fireworks nights

so the place will be PACKED!!!!! Things to see….well Coors is pretty bare bones, no museums or anything, but you might try the Sand Lot…Coors Fields very own Microbrew beer…and the birth place of Blue Moon Beer

Food: Rockies Dog. It’s a foot long hot dog, with Grilled Peppers and Onions (S-Krout optional) (I understand it’s a lot like a Dodger Dog) We also have Rocky Mtn Oysters…they are served, on the first level left field 3rdbase side stand. They are actually very good. Cut a little too thin for my tastes, but it’s unique only to Coors Field.

Rocky Mtn Oysters (not from Coors Field, which are served in a basket w/ French Fries)

There are a LOT of bars and restaurants around the the stadium down Blake St, or just to east one block on Market Sta down 20th (the street to the south), One land mark is a crap hole bar called the El Chapultepec it’s a jazz bar straight out of the early 60’s where Jack Keroack hung out there when he wrote his book “On the Road”. Further down town, is the 16th St. Mall, which is a LONG pedestrian mall, with shops and restaurants, and a free shuttle if you don’t want to walk all of it. Also close to the 16th st. Mall is “Larimer Square” with even nicer restaurants and clubs.

Things to see around Denver….well that’s a LONG list! It’s a great city to visit. I recommend contacting the Denver Visitor’s bureau, and ordering a free tourist book…it’s thick!

Oh forgot

you need to sit in the “Purple Row” before the game (during the game that weekend, it will be packed, and afterwards they will have fireworks) The Purple Row on the upper level that rings the ball park is officially One Mile Above Sea Level. HAVE YOUR PICTURE TAKEN HERE!

And you might want to try the Tornadoughs….they are fried bread on a stick. I like the sugar/cinnamon ones. I’m not sure where the stands are for those (they are stand alones), but there is one in Left Field on the concourse area, and one on upper deck behind the home place area.

I second that.

Tornadoughs, above Sec 154 above the LF bleachers. I’d also recommend the Chicago Dogs – they are at one of the hot dog stands down the LF line on the lower level.
And FYI – the Tornadoughs are baked, not fried (although being bathed in butter and cinnamon/sugar probably negates the benefit of being baked – I still love them either way).
There is probably nothing too exciting at the park during the game – but the LoDo bar area around should be packed before/after the games.

Things to do...

Behind RF on the first concourse is a batting cage with Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis or Dinger pitching to you from a video screen (the ball pops out the screen at the release point). There is also a pitching cage to test your fastball speed, if you can hit 75 you win a prize.

Behind LF is a kids play area if you have any, just watch for Holliday bombs they can be a hazard in that area.

The fountains are beautiful, and you can watch the bullpen warmup from the councourse behind RF.

There is a good restaurant behind the RF foul pole. BTW you can take food and drink inside the stadium, so hit up the outside vendors for a savings on soda and peanuts.

The rockpile entrance lets you in 2 hours before game time to watch BP.

If you have time take a tour of the stadium, they usually start around noon and are very enjoyable.

Food, drinks & Early entry

as Charlie mentioned above you can bring food & drinks into the ballpark with you, as long as the drinks are not in glass bottles or cans & if your brining sunscreen it has to be a cream form aerosol cans are not allowed.

entering early for BP: Gate E & the gate Adjacent to Gate A(also known as the Rockpile Gate) open 2 hours early for BP except on Sun’s there’s no BP & if you have tickets for seats on the first base side they won’t let you to your seats until a half an hour later (like 11:30AM for Day games, 4:30PM for night games).

My 2 cents....

.....just to re-iterate a few points:
Tickets are usually very affordable at Coor’s but Stub-Hib can be a rip-off. You’re attending on the 4th (fireworks game) which means the place should be ~90 – 100% packed.
The restaurants around the ballpark are great – there’s tons within just a few blocks (it’s tough to beat the Chipotle Chicken Wrap at the Sports Column on Blake St (96 steps from Coor’s – just look for the grain elevator) or if you want to eat in the ballpark get a Cheddar Brat at the Sandlot restaurant – as mentioned it’s behind the RF foul pole.
Also, you’ve gotta go a little early and walk to the upper deck for the obligatory purple row picture (the row of seats denoting 1 mile above sea level)
It may be confusing but heed ‘Tulowitzki Rox’ comment about the gates – you can get in 2 hrs before 1st pitch but only at some gates.
Grab all snacks (Cracker Jacks, nuts, bottled water) outside the ball park.
The El Chapultepec bar is truly a crap hole (seriously) but cool nonetheless.
Don’t freak out when you see the pitcher batting and don’t bitch about it. It’s the NL and we love it that way.
Hope this helps and it’d be cool if you post some pics on our fanposts when you get back. Enjoy!

You can be sure of a Fanpost after my visit

Here is one I did on AN after a game there a few weeks ago.

Don’t freak out when you see the pitcher batting and don’t bitch about it. It’s the NL and we love it that way.

Haha – I watch a lot of NL baseball (after all, we have to share the market with the Gnats). Unfortunately, regarding batting pitchers, for every Matt Cain there are at least 5 Barry Zitos (who, of course, sucks even harder at hitting than at pitching).

You haven't had the exquisite joy of watching Ubaldo Jimenez pitch yet?

He makes Zito look like Babe Ruth, after all Zito has a hit this year. U-ball is going on something like 36 plate appearances since he nubbed a pitch past Livan Hernandez for an infield single for his last hit, and is currently hitting .064 for his career. Zito’s .090 looks good in comparison.

Hey, neighbor!

I don’t have anything to add that others haven’t already said (especially since I haven’t been to all that many games at Coors Field, and most were years ago). But I just saw your post and had to comment since it sounds like I am right in your neighborhood. I live right across the street from Fremont HS (I was quite excited when I found out Tulo went there).

Anyway, hi!

Regarding Fremont HS

Fremont’s starting SS this season was a guy named Tyler Tulowitzky. Of course, I have to hate all things Fremont-related since I graduated from Cupertino High.

Tyler Tulowitzki

is Tulo’s younger brother. (Half-brother?)
